User Reviews for Canon Camera Connect

Reliable and simple camera to iPhone, very satisfied.

I’ve been using the app for a week with new Canon EOS M50. Good guide for pairing (the usual Bluetooth multi step but the app is easy to follow). Once paired it stays paired so you don’t have to set it up new every time. App has very fast and straightforward and intuitive ability to scroll through images quickly. There are hundreds in my camera already and I found it super easy to locate, zoom in, download to iPhone for further editing or posting. Have not used GPS or remote control yet. I also every much like that Canon does not try too hard to direct you to their cloud storage (I have my own thank you very much) unlike some other brands who even force you to create jpg with their supposed photo management software (which usually stinks). I also like the M50 as a lightweight travel camera in between a pocket cam, iPhone, and DLSR.

Bugged at best

Awesome WHEN it works. Buggy the rest of the time. The Smart Connect tutorial is a joke. Use this app to connect to a Canon Powershot SXE530HS. Just an amateur photo guy but love the ability to grab the shot and shoot it straight to my iPhone 13 pro max to run it through touch-ups before posting to social media for work. Awesome concept especially when shooting product shots on the fly without running back to a desktop. But it almost never works unless I pull the phone off Wi-Fi and connect to the cameras Wi-Fi instead of seeing it on our network. So out in the field, literally in the woods I can connect to it since I am not accessing Wi-Fi but most of my reason is to use in my work environment. If you delete the access point between the phone and the camera while on your network it will work three out of four times. But why? Why must it be deleted and added back each time to POSSIBLY be able to make a connection with its own app. Granted my camera is about three years old but I know guys using five year old Nikons with no problems. At this point looking into memory cards with Wi-Fi capabilities instead of this headache Canon created.

Fix this app!

I’m not sure which it is, the app or the camera, probably both. The first time I connected the app to my 1DX Markiii it seemed to work fine after configuring everything, which by the way is far more complicated than it needs to be. Maybe it was the fact I hadn’t taken many pictures yet so it didn’t have to process much information. But, after the first time transferring a few images to my phone and then filling the cameras card up a bit I went to transfer a few more images and it crashes the app just scrolling the images. Then the WiFi connection drops and refuses to connect again until you turn the camera off then back on. After that it just repeats the same thing again. You’d think after spending $7000 on a camera that is supposed to do what they say it can Canon would provide an app that makes it actually happen. Apparently they should charge $10,000 and spend the extra on building a working app! And I believe I read somewhere that canon plans on charging for the next version of their camera connecting app. I know now not to buy that one. Good thing they gave everybody a test run for nothing so they know what there’re going to get with a paid version.

Good but not perfect

I’ve been using the app for a couple months now and overall I’m happy with its functionality when it works. As others have mentioned the camera seems to connect and drop randomly. I found turning off the camera and waiting about 2 seconds and then turning it back on seems to fix that issue and it connects right away. I’m currently using this on an iPhone 7+ with a canon 80D. I’m not sure if anyone else has noticed this but when I download my photos from the camera they’re in JPEG even though I’m shooting in raw. When I open the app to view photos I see that they are raw files. I select the pictures I want and download them but when I move them from iPhoto to Lightroom mobile they are all JPEG. Not sure if this is an iPhone optimizing issue or not. I did test my theory using a third party camera app for iPhone that lets you shoot raw photos using the phones camera and imported those into Lightroom mobile and those remained in their raw format. I wish I could download the files to a folder vs only having the option to download to iPhoto to get around this issue. Other than that everything else seems fine. I like using the app as a remote shutter when shooting at night.

Amp up my photo game

The only reason it’s not 5 star is because of how confusing it was to set up at first. I am using a canon rebel t6i. The options start on the M series, but for the most part the self set up is pretty easy. I am giving them a great deal of credit because it seems like they tried to accommodate a lot of models. Once I did get it connected though I was beyond a static and even squealed a little like a little girl. Right away I’m able to access the images on my camera and download them, or I can send them to social media right away and change the compression size to a JPEG format or smaller. However both the camera and the phone must be on Wi-Fi to utilize this, I know that there is a physical device that I can buy to make it so I could use this no matter what which is normally about $130 starting, but for somebody who didn’t want to spend that yet this is an amazing feature and has already amped up my photography business!

The Worst

Honestly, this is probably the most frustrating thing I have dealt with in a while. I am literally in the middle of taking pictures and the connection drops. I will then, turn the camera on AS WELL AS open and close the app. This still changes nothing. When I open the app, I get a notification that the “connection to the camera failed”. If I don’t get that pop up, I’ll get one that says “WiFi is in use on camera...” but still won’t be able to connect. When I go to put the password in (THE ONE THE CAMERA PROVIDES) I get a pop up that says the password is incorrect. I have disconnected and reconnected both the WiFi and the Bluetooth. Turned the camera on and off about 7x now AND STILL it is not connecting. Not to mention, after spending all this time trying to get the camera to connect to my phone, the battery pack on the camera is now dying. Never again in my life will I purchase another cannon product. I will NEVER recommend this to anyone, not even my worst enemy. If you like having your time wasted, this product is for you.

Works well when it works

So i’m an amateur photographer, and like doing fun video projects on my camera. I got it one year ago as a gift. This app 9/10 times will not work!! I will try to connect to it to download and it will say “connection not found” when both devices are connected to my internet and sitting right next to each other. Whenever it actually works I have to wait 10 minutes for it to connect, and then it takes hours for the app to download (I don’t mind this part but with all the time it takes to connect it’s annoying). Today I was trying to connect and download my video clips and it will not work. I have tried everything I could think of..switching which internet I was using, turning the camera off and on, as well as my other device, checking if I need to update, and waiting an hour to see if it will work. I enjoy filming and editing but this app makes it frustrating due to all the bugs. The easy connection guide does not work either!!

Decent But Buggy

I’ve been using this app for months and it works pretty decent with the remote feature. I use it for self portraits, so getting to see the viewfinder and snap shots from my phone is very helpful. It has its annoying quirks, like disconnecting every single time my phone locks or I quickly switch apps like when I’m responding to a text, but it works fine in live view and the shutter button is pretty much instant. I had some trouble connecting the camera to the app once I got a new phone, but was able to figure out the issues after I wiped the wireless settings on the camera and started from factory settings. It was annoying, wish there was a way to connect more than one phone, or if there is one I’m unaware of, at least an easier, more straight forward method. Decent app overall, but you can’t multitask on your phone when you’re using it because you have to reconnect all over again if you accidentally exit out.

You’re better than this, Canon

I rarely write reviews, but I have to echo the other reviews as of late. This app is just too difficult to navigate. Even for the expert it’s far too many steps. I came to the App Store to see if I maybe missed an update or if maybe this app was retired. Then I ended up looking for a replacement app. I used to love using remote live view. It came in extremely helpful on many occasions. Unfortunately, I’ve not even been able to maintain a solid WiFi connection to the camera from 3 feet away. The app tells me I should move closer. If I were any closer I could release the shutter myself. I have small trigger remotes for that sort of thing. That’s not the point of the app. The point of the app is to allow usage of the technology in a way that makes it more convenient to catch a great shot of landscape without freezing near to death. Or getting the shot of a certain bird if you’re a bird watcher. Great feature for nature photography. If it would work. I’ve kind of just given up on it.

Very Useful, but don’t expect perfection

This app is great if you don’t expect great things out of it. It is great at allowing you to quickly access and manage your photos through connecting with the camera. This feature helps me frequently when I want to quickly access the pictures I took at that time. You can download your pictures, even raw pictures, to your device and do with them as you please. I found that videos are typically unable to be played in this app which can be upsetting, but remember, keep expectations modest. Lastly, the live view photo feature is useful and can be nice as a remote trigger for tripod use and pictures that require stability. Not great for fast tracking or professional use though as it is finicky and not perfect in some ways. Overall, the app is great for light to moderate use and for those who like to immediately or conveniently access their pictures on their device without needing to take out the card from the camera. I’d give the app 4 to 4.5 stars, but it’s current ratings aren’t accurate so 5 it is. :)
