Some Hanging, No HomeKit

I recently switched from garbage consumer networking equipment to a Dream Machine SE. I also got a UniFi doorbell, as Ring and other manufacturers are horrendous between support, privacy, and hidden costs. This app has worked well for my family, but it does hang up sometimes. There are a few other reviews noting hang-ups, and those systems may be using several cameras. For my setup of one camera, I'm satisfied.Unfortunately these devices lack HomeKit support, which will keep me from rating 5 stars. Enterprise is definitely the target market, but doorbells are on most houses. There's a market opportunity for better network gear in residential settings, and bundled closed-circuit home camera systems, with HomeKit, are an excellent sales pitch.

Needs improvement

Would be nice to be able to temporarily suspend smart alerts. For example if I am in my yard working I don’t want constant alerts. Would also be nice to allow smart detection alerts to break through sleep/DND. Update for version 1.5.6: New UI is HORRIBLE! When viewing a camera in the timeline, the camera footage is at the very top of the screen. iPhones have curved displays and a notch at the top, which obscures a portion of the footage. Did the developers actually use this version before releasing it??? Also, please fix setting the begin and end points when saving a video. It now defaults to an hour long clip. I often want to save a couple minutes of video and it is EXTREMELY difficult to move the sliders on the timeline. The part you have to tap on is basically on the edge of the screen and it usually takes me 15-20 tries before i can actually tap on it. I guess this is another case of nobody actually using the app before it was released.

Nice interface and good features

App is designed well with easy access to motion/detection events and being able to see live feeds quick. It is very easy to download/share clips as well which is extremely important to me. I have been noticing lately that playback is buffering a lot. It does it with the system I’m directly connected to and the one that I remote in to. Only started noticing it a few days ago… my work around has been downloading all of the footage so I can view it without it buffering. Not sure what changed… that’s just about my only complaint with the app though it may be a general Protect thing and not an app issue?

Good ideas, poor execution

The app has a decent user interface and seems relatively intuitive, but has major functionality issues. I currently have the G4 doorbell paired with a UDM Pro, and while notifications seem to work well, on iOS 14, tapping a notification opens the app to a black screen. I have to close the app and open it again from my Home Screen in order to see what’s going on, which is a hassle. The microphone and talkback controls are not very intuitive either... but my main issue is the tvOS app for Apple TV is COMPLETELY BROKEN. I cannot connect to my UDM pro, my cameras, or anything. The worst part is, this functionality has been broken for months, and Ubiquiti hasn’t released any sort of fix or update yet. These issues have been well documented for over 6 months now, and yet no fix or update. I am eager to install more cameras on the property, but am hesitant to do so until a fix for these issues is released.

6 yrs later geofence works

Updated to all the latest software and randomly get an alert while I’m almost home that my phone is within geofence. Bought this gear in January of 2017 and it has never worked. Get home, plug in one of my Unifi cameras and low and behold it is correctly not sending me alerts as I’m within the geofence. Better later than never. Figured I’d do the right thing and update my rating here, the rest of the system, the routing and access points, I’ve never had a single issue with

UniFi Protect

UniFi Protect allows me to monitor all the entrances to my house while I’m away. SetupAfter downloading the app, I was able to login with my Ubiquiti cloud account. It pulled up all my existing cameras and settings. I was then able to add one new camera via the app. (Note: if the cameras are not on the same subnet as your controller, you will need to go to the web interface of the camera and point to where the controller is.)ManagementFor some reason, none of the camera settings I make on the app will save. Enable HDR, nope. Rename camera, nope. Change motion zones, nope. I currently have to go on the controller via Safari to make changes. I have not tried to add users, so I don’t know if this area works or not. ViewingBeing able to live view or look through history is great. I can see multiple cameras at once or click on one to get a full screen view. This is where having a fast upload connection at home helps. Other notesThis app will crash occasionally when going to full screen or switching between cameras.Alerts/NotificationsI get notifications when motion is detected or camera goes offline. Wish ListApple Watch notifications.Apple TV app for viewing live feeds. OverallThis app allows me to monitor my home while away. However, until I can manage my cameras and the app crashing is fixed, this app doesn’t offer much benefit to me. I will adjust my review as new versions are released. Tested on:iPhone X, iOS 12.3.1

Really bad lag time for videos

My system used to work really good before the last update and I used to be able to see events in real time and was able to catch people at my door etc while the motion was detected and recording the event with only a 2-3 second delay. With this new update there is a like a 10 second delay with viewing the clips because it has to load and most times the event doesn’t show up the first time you click on it so you have to close the clip and click it again. By the time that you get to view the event it’s too late to take live action because 40-50 seconds have passed and you are pushing a minute and people are already leaving or gone by then. I live in an area that is not the best so the real time notifications helped me navigate and turn on lights quickly or whatever I needed to deter people from my home. The live feed is also very slow and delayed, it lags really bad and even though I am watching it it doesn’t show everything live. Cars and people are frozen most time when you watch the feed, it’s like you see them, freezes and then they are gone when it updates the feed. Also, one of my cameras has a hard time catching events at night that it used to, even after trying to ‘fix’ the settings. I really liked my cameras until this update, please fix these lag issues, I prefer the previous versions better.

Good but have some suggestions

I was a Google Nest camera user, but started to have connection issues and the fact my video is stored on the Google servers made me uneasy. So, I upgraded my network to UniFi and am very happy so far. This app has been working well, very snappy on viewing cameras and time lines. Navigation in the app is smooth, no lag at all. Tip of the hat to the iOS developers from a iOS developer. Few things that would be a great addition:1. Add live view with audio support for multiple cameras like the web has. This way I could use these cameras as baby monitors, having 4 kids, need to know who is yelling for us every night. 2. Better iPad large screen support, using new development features in iOS you could do some cool dynamic layouts based on how many cameras you have 3. Add notification settings when going to settings for each camera. 4. When tapping on a camera, start audio. Make it configurable in settings. 5. I have a G3 micro and Connection is showing 0 in connection details6. Add ability to see connection speed/strength over time if connect to WiFi camera7. Ability to change bit/frame rate from app8. Add motion gif image to push notifications when there is motion. Also, a image right before it is disconnected. Nest app has this and it is really nice Thank you.

It’s JUST okay

I switched over to Unifi Protect from the Unifi Video NVR. Unifi Video app was actually really good functionality and layout wise, but was severely buggy to the point of some features just stopped working. But, I had an old iPad 2 that I used as a monitor, was the perfect use for that device, could pick it up and carry it to the kitchen and watch the cameras. Now that I’ve switched to Unifi Protect, Protect won’t run on the iPad2 because it’s iOS 9.3.5 and Protect requires iOS 10 and above. I’m not happy that now my old iPad 2 is obsolete. The motion alerts can get annoying sometimes though. If someone’s working in the yard in the motion zone of the camera, I get a new notification like every few seconds from the camera. There’s not really anything you can do to fix that though, not even tweaking motion zones. I think it should have a dummy timer option where if a motion zone is seeking constant motion, it doesn’t SPAM my phone with alerts. 2-way communication with this app is a joke though, the onboard speakers and mics on the cameras are terrible, even the G4 doorbell. If Ubiquiti doesn’t include better mics and speakers on their cameras, they should just abandon this feature as it doesn’t work. Selecting a clip and exporting it works fantastic though, it just works! Saves directly to my photos/icloud library.

Snooze, Dark Mode, snapshot notifications

There are a few annoyances with this app. There are two incredibly obvious missing features from the app. Dark mode for when you want to see your cameras laying in bed at night. After the latest update they even made the splash screen during logging in completely white instead of the previous dark blue. Thanks for that blinding splash page. I can only hope they did this because they’re preparing to add a dark mode. Also, more importantly, a motion snooze button in notifications. I have a cameras in locations where I would like notifications but do occasionally spend extended periods of time in. It would be nice to be able to snooze motion notifications for 10, 15 and 30 minutes at a time when I know I’ll be on my patio for a while. Otherwise I get notification after notification and is extremely useless and annoying.Another useful a feature found in other systems that’s not present in Protect are snapshot notifications. If someone rings the doorbell I get a text notification…Ring shows you a picture and is very helpful when deciding if worth answering. Scrolling and loading issues are persistent. I’ve been home over the last year and half so I haven’t noticed it much, but recently was away for a week and it was a horrible experience trying to load cameras or scroll timelines. Makes the system worthless.
