User Reviews for Capture One

Additional needs…

I have been a Capture One user for many years… The desktop version destroys anything Adobe, and in many ways it is better than every other RAW processing app. Other apps may do specific things better, but in general Capture One is my go-to app when editing imaged that need to be perfect. For my architectural interiors and exteriors, I have relied on CamRanger for a number of years, and in many ways this destroys the the Cam Ranger 2. Transfer speed appears to be the similar, and there is zero to minimal latency when shooting with a strobe compared to the CamRanger 2 on my Sony a7rIV. Live View Support would make the mobile apps amazing, and I suspect render the CamRanger2 one less thing I have to worry about charging and carrying from location to location. The editing options are fantastic and for a mobile app, better than any I have used. While not exactly the desktop version, I am sure others care more for these updates than Live View. Still, Live View is a must, in my opinion! With that 5 Stars!

I understand the frustration, but…

I 100% get the frustration with the iPad version of capture one and a few months ago I would have rated it it 3 stars at BEST. It is not a fully baked standalone alternative to the Mac version. So many features are missing and it’s really not ready for use as a standalone raw editor. What it is, I have learned, is a fantastic tool for a very narrow scope of work - basically a companion to the full desktop capture one to use for tethered shooting -or- a just-good-enough editor to get something out while in the field. Understanding that, I think it accomplishes what it aims to. Do I wish we could have full desktop capture one on an iPad? Yes. Do I wish for more editing tools? Definitely (levels, curves, brushes, etc. would all be very welcome.)Is this worth the subscription price? Maybe… it wasn’t for me for personal use, but for professional tethered portrait sessions: I feel it offers just enough to be useful and it’s great for clients to interact with. I hope we get more our of this soon, but if you are looking for a solid option for tethered shooting, than this might be the tool to get.

Nearly immediately frustrating

I can’t determine a good reason that this version is so painfully chopped down compared to its desktop counterpart. I tried on both iPhone and iPad. I’m positive an M1 iPad Pro can handle a fully fledged Capture One Pro. I was at least able to connect my Fujifilm X-T4 to the iPad, but that’s when I learned that there was no Live View. Why??? That was 80% of the reason I wanted the app in the first place. Capture One on iOS/iPadOS has been out for almost a year now; why isn’t this a feature? I’m sorry, but shooting directly to my device instead of a memory card just feels pointless. Also, why would I try to hold my camera or tripod mount it and use a very powerful and expensive iPad Pro just to hit the shutter? It couldn’t even change exposure or shutter speed settings on the fly — they would almost immediately flip back to the starting value I left them on. This app feels like it’s in an early beta stage nearly a year later, and you’re asking for money for it. I could maybe get some use out of it to do some really basic RAW processing shortly after shooting, or if I don’t want to work from my laptop I guess?

No access with perpetual license

It’s annoying to have to pay a subscription for this app. I bought a perpetual license for the desktop version (which does not give you any access to this mobile app) so I didn’t have to pay every single month towards using it. And now they’ve released the app with only a subscription access plan. I would consider a one time payment for access to it but I don’t want to spend $5 or more per month just to edit on mobile too. Maybe it’ll be good for professionals who like to edit on phones, if you can pass the charge on to your clients.

App comes a long way, but a lot more to go

I love that C1 is making the jump to iPhone, but overall the app doesn't feel intuitive. I would love for there to be an auto button for exposure and HDR, even auto align. I like the fact that you can edit with the sliders but a lot of the desktop features are not available here that would justify paying for the app version when the photo app from iPhone can do 99% of the features here.Would love to have the option for more features from desktop such as the heal tool, Gradient, etc.

Clunky interface, lacks major features but still a subscripiton

The interface designers tried something. Well, at least they tried. This doesn‘t work well at all. Lightroom (while more classic) is still so much faster to work with.Very basic keyboard support, can‘t do any editing with keys. Their system with the quick keys is great on desktop and would be a natural fit on an iPad. It baffles me to not find this in the app. Also forget about filtering anything in this app except for ratings, stars or date. Yup, that‘s it. No metadata jpg/raw filtering. No support for working on catalogs/session via external memory. This list just goes on and on, really. I know they need to start somewhere but sorry, this is just not good enough to be considered an alternative to Lightroom. You‘re making your own life harder by trying to use the app. The time you might „save“ by using this app while in transit you‘ll loose trying to get the files off the device and into your sessions/catalog. Especially if it‘s more than 3 photos you‘re working with. They have to sink another year or two into this app until it *maybe* catches up with today’s Lightroom.

Doesn’t work - must match your Apple ID

This is worthless. The app requires that your Apple ID and associated email matches your email information with Capture One. I already have an account with Capture One. I’m not going to create another account just so I can evaluate this app for 7 days. I am also not going to make my Apple email match my email business email. Apple and business are completely unrelated. In the FAQs fo the app: “Do I log in with the same account?” FAQ answer: “
Yes, you log in with the same account that you use for Capture One Pro on desktop. Ensure that your Apple ID uses the same email address.” This is a non-starter. Really… I could not even preview the app. Get a different developer that understands the we need 7 days to actually use the app to see if it has value. Then we can OPT IN after trying the app. Hopefully the app developers will allow us to run the app for 7 days, maybe limit us to 10 photos until we OPT IN. Please write a new version of the app. I deleted the app and I will wait for a re-write of this app. I will NEVER make my email addresses match. Apple and work are unrelated.

Underpowered and Overpriced.

Flatly, this app, with the capabilities it has, should be included for free with the subscription to Capture One Pro for desktop. If this was a powerful alternative to desktop and not just a limited companion to the desktop version I could see some sort of an argument for a separate charge, but with the lack of full support for levels, curves, and what seems to be inferior processing there is no reason I believe that this app deserves to be 5 dollars a month on top of an existing CP1P subscription that is already 180 dollars a year.

Should not be a subscription for current full version subscribers

My native editor on my phone is more powerful than this app when it comes to editing. Comparing with LR on Apple phones is tough for C1P. Only workflow I can see where this beats LR is tethering. I don’t shoot tethered so it has no meaning for me. I need layers, brushes, cloud integration with full version C1P to pick up where I left off. I think for the limited feature set a subscription fee is ridiculous for current subscribers of the full software. This should be an additional feature of the current license. Hate to say it but I’m disappointed.

The app has come a long way

After being out shooting I often prefer transferring the images from my card to Capture One iPad for their initial review and culling. It offers a great start for those images I immediately know I want to develop further. I can checkout the possibilities with that same tools as the desktop. This app has steadily improved since its first release and deserves taking the time to explore its capabilities and ways to speed the developing process.Even after using the cloud transfer to send my latest batch of images to the desktop I'll still go back to the iPad to try out new ideas first.
