Second time trying to write a review

Great game, and I am not sure why my original review doesn’t show, but something needs to be done about Gau’s auto-battle. I have posted it a few places and sent a note to Square-Enix; it’s my only issue with the game.Gau’s auto-battle on iOS doesn’t remember his Rage from battle to battle. It seems minor, but I don’t really care: he’s one of two characters that would benefit from this, it seems like an oversight or problem so it should be fixed anyhow, and it’d change my 4-star review to a 5 immediately if it were fixed.Otherwise, I am loving it!

Awesome with one annoyance…..

I absolutely love this version of FF6. My one complaint is the wonky digital d-pad. Just like FF5 pixel remaster and probably all the other pixel remasters, it works, but there are times the response isn’t great. Luckily in a game like this, it’s not extremely critical for the most part. There is the tap to move option that works much better, but a little annoying trying to get through doors. Rather than that, I highly recommend this game.

Wow

I’ll be honest, even though FF6 is one of my all time favorite games, the pixel remaster series has barely been on my radar. The improvements seemed minor and almost gimmicky, and hardly worth the time or money. Especially when I already own previous editions of the titles. But the love and care that went into the FF6 pixel remaster exceeds expectations. The new backgrounds, special effects, color pallets, vibrancy, character sprites all work together to create a beautifully fresh and yet incredibly faithful version of this game. Combat feels quick and snappy but has the usual speed and UI customizations to suit it to your needs. More than anything its hard to say enough about what the new soundtrack does for the experience. These are still very much the BGMs we know and love, but faithfully redone in an orchestral style that fits perfectly. Added instruments and layers in a few cases serve to subtly enhance the power of these musical pieces rather than make them into something unfamiliar. This is FF6 better than I remember it. It looks, feels, and sounds incredible. I’m very impressed and based on my first few hours with the game I expect this will truly be the definitive version of FF6.

Childhood remastered!

Great revision of a classic from my childhood. Improved menu, post battle screen with EXP until next level shown, and even MAPS!!! The new remastered pixel artwork looks fantastic! My only gripe with this game is there is ZERO support for Backbone/Bluetooth controllers. You have to use the built in controller options in the game, which is incredibly disappointing for those of us with classic SNES Bluetooth controllers that want that classic nostalgia of playing back in 1994. Previous releases of games such as the final fantasy initial releases, Chrono Trigger, etc., support Bluetooth controllers, so why not the pixel remasters?

Loving it so far - **Request for control update**

This game is blowing my mind. It’s the first time I’ve played FFVI but I’ve watched a few videos of the older versions and the art the team they put into this is incredible. The music, the visuals, the atmosphere, the tiny little movements the characters do, I love it. Really enjoying the story so far too. I can’t wait to see where it leads. TO THE DEVELOPERS: Could you please update the control system? (these notes are from using an 11in. IPad) Having the virtual joystick be locked into place means that whej I lift my thumb for whatever I will inevitably press it down too far to the left or bottom or something of the d-pad (since I can’t feel the physical buttons) and so then the character will be running in directions I didn’t intend and it gets annoying. I played Chrono Trigger on my iPad recently and the controls on that were PERFECT. Having the joy stick appear wherever your thumb lands and swipes, but then stay in the same spot if you are just tapping, is a great system. Could you add a third control option to have the floating joystick? Thank you!

A Fabulous Remaster - Close To Perfect

I’ve been waiting for this remaster ever since I played the original Final Fantasy 6 release for iOS which was a (phantom) train wreck. So far the remaster is great - the graphics, music, QOL improvements - all top notch. A few complaints / issues however that are keeping this game from being perfect. Hopefully they’ll be addressed in future updates. 1. The font - I’m playing on a 2020 iPhone SE and I feel like I have to keep it inches from my face to read the dialogue. It doesn’t help it’s small and impacted. I hope they change it to a more legible font (although unlikely given this is the 6th PR release with the same font). Maybe on bigger phones or tablets this is less an issue, but on smaller devices it’s borderline unreadable.2. The play clock is broken - If you’re still in game and you switch to another app, it’s still running. It’s taken me 16 hours to get to the Imperial Camp apparently. 3. The d-pad is annoying - I’m not sure why they felt the need to put a mini version of the character you’re using in the middle that moves the same way as it does on screen. It’s kind of redundant? I know who I’m using. It also would be nice to have the option for a 4-way d-pad instead of the 8-way. I find myself going diagonal half the time by accident.

Almost perfect!

Honestly I’m not sure why I had so much trouble sticking through this game on the SNES. The story kept me hooked, most of the characters are great, and the soundtrack is amazing. That all being said, I honestly don’t care for the Magicite system. Be prepared to grind constantly if you want to get your party members to learn all or most of the magic in the game. It’s just way too much micromanaging and it brings the pace of the game to a crawl. I much prefer the job system, especially with the improvements they made to it in Final Fantasy V. Also the final boss against Kefka is buggy as all get out. I beat him on my second or third attempt and after his death animation played out, the game froze up on me. That’s not counting several other occasions where the game froze on me during the final boss. I can’t be bothered to go through that final fight again after all the bugs I experienced. Hopefully the devs will fix this in a patch/update. Until then, I’d just stick with the original SNES game.

Needs controller support

I fondly remember playing FFVI on the SNES. This is a brilliant port/remake that desperately needs controller support. Playing this on an iPad is pretty terrible without a controller. On an iPhone would possibly be okay.I encountered a game breaking bug within the first few minutes of gameplay and needed to start over. I defeated all the enemies, but was still stuck in battle and unable to run away. I hope that doesn’t happen again….

Great remaster; familiar game with phenomenal music

I’m loving my time with the Pixel remaster. The only reason I am giving this a 4 is due to a game breaking bug. It’s for the optional quest for Gogo. After crossing the bridges with the wandering too-hat gentlemen, if you enter the next room, the game soft locks and remains as a black screen. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m currently walking around with one of my characters as an imp or using the moogle charm, but it looks like I won’t be able to get gogo this time around. Still, I’ve been having a great time playing through one of my favorite RPGs of all time.

No controller support apparently

This is a big downside. Obviously there must be controller support since this was also released on steam, but I can’t get it to work with iOS. I can play with a controller on every other final fantasy app that I have on my phone. Including the other version of FF6. This makes streaming this game much more inefficient, and on top of that, playing the game with a controller instead of the touch screen is easier and more intuitive. Otherwise the remaster is great. The updated score is fantastic. I much prefer the pixel graphics to that weird, post retro sort of thing that is on the other FF6. Pretty much everything is great about this game except for the lack of controller support on iOS. If this gets implemented then I will change my review to 5 stars.
