Requires Wi-Fi to set up devices on the app, cannot used cellular data connection
My iPhone 13 is running iOS 15.2. The Govee home app installed is version 4.7.2. I am on cellular data and I tried connecting multiple 5705 thermometers to the app. They show up as Bluetooth devices within the app, with the correct device names. When trying to connect to them, from the app, you can see the connection icon on the device, so they are communicating over Bluetooth. The app then comes back with a Network Error indication and the device doesn’t pair. If I use my iPhone as a hotspot, then connect my iPad running 15.2 to the hotspot, I can use the app on my iPad to connect to my the devices successfully. Since I don’t have Wi-Fi at my location and these are Bluetooth devices, why are they dependent on a Wi-Fi network to setup on the app? Please update the app to allow set up of the devices, when using cellular data. Also the Network Error indication is misleading, as it should say Wi-Fi Network Error. The user assumes it is a Bluetooth Network Error, because they are pairing a Bluetooth device at the time.
Was Good, now Great!
Update #2 - This app continues to get better and more stable, as do their products. I have many strip lights and bulbs in my home, one of which stopped connecting to WiFi. Excellent Customer Service! After a few unsuccessful emails to try resetting etc, they are shipping a new one, free of charge. Can’t ask for more than that!!!Update: Since my previous review below this function has been added so you can now control any number of sets of lights together using the scene function. This completes the app for me and is now 5 stars. Shout out to Govee for updating their app regularly and not just abandoning it like lots of others do.This app is overall very good and easy to use and set up, however, it lacks one critical function. You can not link multiple bulbs or LED strips so to change colors or anything you have to do each one individually. It’s unnecessarily painful. There is a work around using Alexa routines but still very tedious. I hope the developer reads this and others similar requests as this would be an easy 5 stars if they added this function.
Bluetooth LED Strips
Bought the Bluetooth ARGB LED strips from Govee. They work very well, get plenty bright. The app works great. You do need an external USB power adapter, though, higher the amp rating, the better. Didn’t work well powered off my TV or with a typical 500mA charger, some effects would cause the LEDs to reset: Swapped it out for a higher power charger adapter. Still get some feint “flicker” at times but not too bad or noticeable unless you’re really looking for it. The app is nice and mostly intuitive. I do wish there were better control over speed, though, not very much difference between high and low. Been running these strips for nearly 2 years without issue once I got the power situation sorted. Bluetooth always connects and is much better than the flimsy remotes you typically get. Don’t know about their other products but happy with the LED strips.
Lightbulbs cannot sync in mic mode
It’s very cool, and playing around with it has been fun, however, I noticed that when you create a scene you also limit the amount of functions you can use with the lightbulbs. You can still go into each lightbulb individually and set them to mic mode for example, but even if all are on, only one will work at a time. If they added all of the functions to Scene you could control all of the lights in your light fixture with the different modes and I feel that really needs to be added. ALSO, turning on the mic function automatically turns off any music you are playing on your phone and disconnects a Bluetooth speaker. This may be because the mic is set up to come from your phone but if there’s any way to change this, it would be nice to use this problematic function. Otherwise they’re great though!!
App Needs Versatility and Sync Features!!!
In my opinion, the app and products that go along with it are acceptable. However, my led strips (2 boxes of 32 foot RGBIC H6146) are a huge hassle to control using the app. The scene feature is okay and gives you SOME options, but there is still more potential for creative minds to capitalize on. I’m not sure if anyone else has this problem but I have experienced it daily. My problem is that using the DIY feature is very difficult and not user friendly. In specific, I can’t connect to two different sets of strip lights and still use the lighting effects center. This problem can easily be resolved by adding the lighting effects center to the scene section of the app. Along with this, the term “scene” is used for two completely different things. One “scene” is preset light settings, and the other “scene” is multiple devices. This can be easily resolved by changing the second mentioned “scene” to the word group. Again, the products and app are not horribly bad, but they still need some more customizable options for your lights. For the developers: please revise the lighting effects center and make it more available throughout the app, perhaps make the lighting effects center available in scene mode where you can put multiple devices on at once. This would eliminate the problem of having two sets of lights and not being able to sync them.
Excellent App
Govee was running a sale on their thermo/hygrometers, so I bought one to test it out. I was so impressed by the quality of both the hardware and this app that I ended up buying five for the house🤣! What I really like about this app is that it's very organized; all their products appear in a consistent, thoughtful way. It's easy to add new products, and I haven't had an issues syncing my hardware from the app. They update the app often and provide a detailed changelog.Many of their products have cheaper bluetooth-only and more expensive bluetooth+wifi versions. If you buy the bluetooth-only version, you can only sync/control that hardware when you're in range of the device. When you're outside of the range, the device will appear within the app with the most recent data, but you cannot sync or take action on the device. The bluetooth+wifi versions allow sync/control when you're not near the device. (The company is very clear with these limitations, but I've read many reviews where this causes them to remove stars.)
Just okay
We just have lights for our house, specifically I use Govee lightbulbs for my bedside lamp. It really has the bare minimum of features. There are a lot of things that I would expect with this kind of app and bulb that are just not met, including:- App does not sync to the world clock - in other words, it didn’t change the time with Daylight Savings and there’s no way I can find to manually change the time, I think I’d have to reset the whole thing or something - The gradual brightness only works with certain settings... “Wake up” doesn’t work with alternative colors or warmth. “Sleeping” changes the lamp settings to a specific scene and you can’t even schedule it. - Also with “Wake up”, an automatic turn off doesn’t work. I use the wake up function in the morning and then wanted it to turn off automatically in case I forgot but it just... doesn’t do anything- there’s no widget for lamps, just for a thermometer I don’t have, so it’s a pain to dig through my apps just to turn off my light (which I have to do because the auto off doesn’t work)- tried setting up Siri and it just didn’t work These are just the things that annoy me the most, it feels like they really didn’t bother actually making the lamp functional or testing it with users. It changes color, sometimes turns on and off, and has a couple extra functions that don’t integrate whatsoever with the rest of the functions. Can’t recommend in good faith.
Not functional on iPad. I want a refund for this expensive lightbulb.
Update: they have now fixed the app scaling for the 15in iPad Pro. THANK YOU! I’m now happy with this bulb and the app.Update: this app is now 100% unusable with 15inch iPad Pro. After the update it was crashing on open. I was able to get that to stop by deleting and reinstalling but it’s now impossible to get my light added back in because of the scaling issue. YOU SHOULD AT LEAST REMOVE IPAD FROM THE COMPATIBLE DEVICES LIST IN THE DESCRIPTION. didn’t care about the colors or modes or any of the fancy things this light bulb could do. I simply wanted a bulb that I could turn off from my iPad without having to get out of bed. It was ok at first even though the app had scaling issues. But, Over the last two updates the scaling issue got worse, Now there are connection issues where it does not even connect to the light unless I put the app in the background and reopen it. I’m about ready to see if I can get a refund since the app developers seem to be consistently making the app for controlling these lights worse. A smart bulb is just a very expensive lightbulb without competent app developers. Fix this app for iPad please!
Great app just needs more support
So I got the govee led strips and I connected them to govee home and it was simple and easy, there’s just addition that would be nice and bug, so the bug is when I added a shortcut by long pressing the app(iOS) I saw that there was a shortcut thing so I added it. Now I don’t know if this has anything to do with it but when I go into the app and I see all my devices and click on for one of them it takes a little bit and then says operation succeeded but no lights turned on but when I click it again it works, and I do not own Alexa and do not plan to so I think that it would be great to add in more support for instance the shortcut app like make a shortcut that turns on the lights or changes the colors. Those two elements aside I think you have a great product I would love to see those two worked on.
Does The Job
I use this app and temperature sensors to monitor my new HVAC installation of two 4 ton Trane AC units and two Trane gas furnaces.Prior to this did not know this app even available.Anyway, put sensors in several important rooms (master bedroom and office) for one HVAC unit and den and second bedroom on other system.Can see how well the vents are adjusted to maintain uniform temperature in house especially important areas.I monitor on an hourly basis to cut down lot of points of data but for day to day monitoring which I export to an Excel chart and shows a nice comparison of monitored temperatures over time and tracking of temperature over time too for individual monitoring points.Shows house wide temps at same point in time as well as how the temps vary within same monitoring station.Use 3 sensors now but plan on getting more for a great comparison of both temps in different areas of house as well as those actual temperatures.A little rambly on recomendation but does the job! And humidity just a bonus to show how it varies over time and what affects it.Great product and remote access of real time data a plus. Lets me know what my HVAC units are really doing when away. And have wifi access also the HVAC units master temperature thermostat and see if any action required by me when away. Kind of a checkup of the entire system.Get this!!!!!
