Absolute work horse for zotero on an iPad

I’m a fan of Zotero for PDF storage/sorting/syncing and bibliographic data collecting. PaperShip brings the key element of that to iPads. While long not updated, it continued to “just work” without much fuss. Now, it has been updated to work more consistently with newer devices and their software. For my needs—annotating PDFs that are synced back to the main Zotero database—it is fantastic. I haven’t explored all the new features, but am thrilled it is still being updated. It is a testamony to its reliable programming that it worked for the multi-year gap in updates that ended a few years ago. I look forward to continuing to rely on this workhorse.

Default screen option.

So suppose I am reading a paper. It would be great to have option to keep that open whenever I open app so that way if I am continuing reading I don’t need to open that article again and again. It will save time. There could be an orientation of article option. Like in app suppose I want landscape orientation to view figure or read text then that option could be lot helpful. These things can easily be added.Text highlight with yellow color should be free option if one buy Mac version. I don’t know if it is free. Because I bought my version and don’t know if mobile version is free or not.

Excellent .. but much under the hood and no manual

I’m delighted to see a recent update to this app, as it indicates it has not been abandoned. As a research oriented medical director I spent a good deal of my time reading scientific PDFs and annotating these for future reference or citation. Although this is not the most intuitive program to set up, it does synch beautifully with Zotero and is an excellent annotation app. Moreover, one can easily export annotations by using the share icon (box with upfacing arrow) and using email command. This appears to be an undocumented feature - and I have no idea why it works this way-but it does so beautifully. Would greatly benefit from some instructional videos as many features hidden, and again not intuitive. Due to Zotero synch has largely replaced most of PDF readers, e.g. Goodreader. Once you have figured out the kinks and qwerks your efforts will be well rewarded. By all means also implement Zotfile on Zotero.

Only real option, but could use some improvements

Being able to sync my Zotero library on to my iPad and annotating the PDFs is something I’ve used extensively over the years. No other app has been able to accomplish this, to my knowledge. That said, PaperShip isn’t perfect. Mainly:* While you can search for literature in the app, I have never been able to add it to my library successfully. It usually just silently fails. I still have to add items to my Zotero library on my regular computer, then sync them to the iPad. Please, please fix this. It’s a hassle and it would be amazing to do everything directly from the iPad.* Minor feature suggestion: a built-in “dark”/inverted mode for PDFs would be nice. You can use the iPad OS smart invert to do this, but having it in the app would be nice.

Annotations Pack does not work (Jan 2022)

Apple should not let people pay for the in-app features because they DO NOT WORK. The app itself seems well-designed and intuitive. You can sync it with your Zotero library to view any PDF you have in Zotero. But to do any kind of markup on the PDFs, you have to pay for the Annotations pack. The app lets you preview the functionality of the paid features but it’s not a true trial — you get to play around annotating a sample PDF within the app but can’t test syncing the annotations with your own Zotero account. I liked the features (and didn’t see the purpose of a read-only PDF viewer that synced with Zotero) so I paid for the Annotations pack right away. The annotations I made to PDFs within the Papership app never showed up in Zotero. It just never worked at all. It was supposed to be automatic and seamless. But it doesn’t work and there is zero support from the developer. I later found lots of similar complaints going back several years on forums. I can’t believe Apple still lets this app sell features that are completely nonfunctional. Save yourself the headache and $10 by using the Zotfile plugin and a PDF reader of your choice until Zotero finally releases its iOS app.

Great, but please fix the annotations

I’m not an academic researcher, but I do research and write on some esoteric subjects, so I was looking for a god way to collect and work with references. I found Zotelo and PaperShip and they’re nearly perfect. I use the Zotelo browser plugin and ISBN search to record references, and PaperShip allows me to reference them anywhere and make notes. So far it works wonderfully. The only problem is that I’d like to purchase the PDF annotation feature so I don’t have to use an external app, but looking at reviews here and elsewhere it appears to be broken. The rest of the app is great, and I’d like to support the developer, but not if it didn’t work. Fingers crossed this will be figured out soon!

Favorite PDF Reader, Until Latest Update

Papership’s compatibility with both Zotero and IPad has made it my go-to PDF reader for years. As another reviewer mentioned, I’m glad to see that the developers are still paying attention to this application, since many PDF readers are neglected and fall into obsolescence. However, the latest update to the PDF annotation tools is lacking in comparison to earlier versions. I’ll update this review as I discover further issues, but for starters: 1) one can no longer scroll with two fingers while using the highlight tool, 2) multiple highlights now overlap rather than connect, 3) the highlighting function itself is somewhat laggy. I hope the developers will restore some of the application’s original functionality!

Annotations not working on iPad Pro

I have exactly the same problem described below. Once I purchased the annotations pack, I could not get annotations to work at all until I uninstalled then reinstalled the app, then restored the annotations pack purchase. Even then, the annotations icon doesn't work as shown in the demo. You have to select text, and then you get annotation features. And, as you start annotating it sometimes will not let you out of that mode. As another user noted, "Also, it is difficult to go out of the annotation mode so I keep drawing random lines while trying to figure out how to switch to a read mode." Frustrating, as this is really needed and has great potential. Reading my Zotero database is not a problem, so at least for that part of the functionality it seems fine.

Amazing Study/Research Tool

I have spent loads of time and a bit of money finding pdf reading and annotating apps in a quest to go semi-paperless as a graduate student. If you use Zotero (I’m not sure how it works w/ mendeley b/c I’ve never used that software) this app provides great integration with the zotero desktop app. In the past I’ve had to save articles to zotero and then open them in a separate app, which normally required saving the PDFs somewhere else taking up more space and increasing complexity: now that I’ve found papership I no longer need to do this. I do the first read of every article I download on zotero, and my annotations get saved for future reference. This app has great features and provides the essentials, but it has a lot of room to improve adding useful but not necessary functions such as rotating the pdf pages and saving them in that orientation. Also, if there could be a breakdown of the local cache as well as the total, it would allow me to spot articles i no longer need downloaded very simply and delete them on a case-by-case basis. Developers, you are awesome for returning to update this app, please keep doing so.

Fantastic!

I really love this app. I have a Zotero collection numbering in the thousands of journal articles and this handles it with a breeze. The built-in viewer is good for reading and marking up documents that syncs to my Mac and Windows box. On the 12.9 iPad Pro I can also use split view and take long hand notes with another app like OneNote while reading articles. Overall the app works very well and is a great way to browse and read through my literature collection from the comfort of my couch or bed at night. One last thing - it doesn’t have a dark theme but iOS’s smart invert works almost as well.
