Counterproductively buggy

I purchased LiquidText for all platforms when it was first released. It had many showstopper bugs, too many to count. It was fine as a PDF reader, but all projects were corrupted universally. Fighting with the interface was always counterproductive and deleterious to workflow. Old projects would not open or freeze after opening. If an annotation needed to be altered or deleted, then the whole project would become corrupted. These problems have persisted through its inception, and have only become worse since the developers adopted a subscription model to increase revenue. I would have fewer objections if the app worked (I use it on macOS, iPadOS and Windows, all with countless bugs). Be careful when you read the App Store reviews (Apple gets an up to 30% cut of all revenue). App Store reviews highlight what the app claims it can do, while ignoring bugs. If you value your time, productivity, sanity (and your pocket change), then avoid this app. It would be very useful if it worked. Unfortunately, it does not. App Store developers have PR folks who write responses to critical reviews like this, asking people to contact them directly. I have given them feedback directly. Nothing changed.

Great app but could be better

I recently got an iPad Pro for Dental School so I could annotate my notes much more easily and efficiently. I’ve been using the app for about 2 weeks. I love that I can search through multiple documents for 1 topic by using control F and that I can place connections between my notes and the document for easy searching after. The concept behind this app is great but there could be some improvements. For example every time I go back into the same doc , the setting in which I had left the highlighter and pen are reset. As a student it would make note taking more efficient if I didn’t have to go back to fix my preferences for the pen and highlighter every time i go back into the same document. There have also been times when what i write magically disappears right after i write it. I have to exit the app and open it all over all for the writing to work again. So far these are my only suggestions, otherwise I’m enjoying studying with the app.

Update on a Review and Apologies

Originally I wrote this…„… many important features I bought in the pro version were taken away which would force me to subscribe to get them back and that is not cool at all. I do not have the money to subscribe to every app I like to use and I will never subscribe to an app that took away what I paid for.“It still states I have the pro version but my confusion was with the cloud sync and continuous cloud sync which come with live. My pro features were not stolen from me and I do appreciate I was allowed to keep them because the subscription price is crazy for what I need it for, however if I was writing extreme research papers again, I would take the plunge because it is an awesome app for that. I have nothing bad to say about the app. It was novel when it first came out and hasn’t turned into abandonware like many have.

Nothing else like it but one major draw back

This app is great for all the reasons you’ll see in the other reviews, but it has a total show stopper for me and I suspect for others concerned with possibly losing data. I recently restored my iPad as new without restoring from a backup, a good practice now and then to get rid of all the software cruft that accumulates over years and can persist after restoring from backups. I assumed all my LiquidText work was synced/stored in iCloud and would repopulate in the app once I opened it and it had time to sync. Well, I didn’t realize that it’s not actually synced, it’s just stored in the iCloud backup which is just a meaningless blob of data unless you restore the whole iPad from it. Fortunately I didn’t have anything too important in LiquidText at the time so it was just an annoyance rather than a disaster. I highly recommend they switch to iCloud syncing, as Notability for example has had for a while now, versus just backing up with the iPad backup. Notability doesn’t have the same features I love in LiquidText, but I will switching to it for dealing with PDFs until iCloud syncing is enabled. Otherwise a great app.

Instantly noticed a bug

Owned this app for less than 5 minutes and found a bug. For such an expensive app, bugs shouldn’t be that obvious. I used the highlighter while zoomed out and, when I expanded the pdf, my highlighter mark hadn’t stayed on the words I had highlighted, it had stayed where it was - the size it was - while the rest of the pdf had expanded. A similar and equal thing happened when I highlighted the expanded pdf and then shrunk it back down. The highlighter mark was gigantic on a comparably tiny page. I’m not any expert on app development but, that seems like a pretty basic feature for ANY app developer to have checked. “Does everything scale proportionally?” I get the feeling that nobody at any of these tech companies actually uses their own products... for instance, I’m pretty sure Steve Jobs was the last guy to use an Apple product at Apple. (Looking at you Marcos Alonso. Why my Safari all wack? Why my app switcher gotta make no sense? Where my fluidity at?)But, I digress. I will change my review if I decide to keep it - which will solely rely on the speed of developer response.

Great app but.....

I really like this app, having purchased the iPad and Mac version. But one thing is very frustrating... projects are copied locally, so this means if I work on a file on my iPad, and I want to work on it on my Mac, I have to export it to the cloud... now there are two files one on my iPad and one in the cloud. Now I go to my Mac to open it off the cloud and it makes a copy now there are three files. To get it back to my iPad, I have to export it from my Mac to cloud, overwriting the iCloud version and go to my iPad and find the iCloud version and when I open it, it overwrites the iPad local version. It is very easy to loose track of which file is the latest or worse yet have two different versions. Contacting the developers they say they are going to offer a subscription for syncing files?!?! Such a simple feature built into Apples development software to just sync across iCloud. No need to have a server somewhere. It is so tiring of developers wanting to do a subscription. I don’t mind doing a sub for value added, but this should be built in..... I’m looking for a new note taking app now....

Be sure to try before you buy!

This app is a wonderful idea and I prefer its concept to that of MarginNote because of the ability to write directly on the working space where excerpts go. However, there is something seriously wrong with the PDF parser that destroys its functionality - for many documents it is impossible to select text accurately in order to highlight or excerpt it, defeating the entire purpose of this app. When trying to select one short passage, much larger blocks of distant text (or even the whole column or page!) become selected. In documents with 2 columns of text, it is usually possible to select text accurately in the left column but NOT in the right column. This is not a problem with my PDF source files, as they work perfectly in MarginNote, PDF Expert, Notability, GoodNotes, and the native iOS PDF Reader. There is clearly some kind of major problem with this app’s ability to see and process text properly. This was acknowledged by the support staff when I contacted them about it, with no fix in sight. I purchased upgraded Pro versions for both Mac and iOS before I discovered this fatal flaw, so am unable to use these expensive apps. A complete waste of money.

Essential. Don’t know how I lived without it.

I’ve tried dozens of PDF apps and there is nothing that compares to LiquidText. Nothing. The $30 Pro version might seem expensive, but this app has no equal. The ability to easily highlight, excerpt, then organize in the board area makes contextualizing information uniquely efficient. You can mind-map excerpts, add comments on comments, intuitively interconnect them with the source text within the PDF, draw and write to your creative hearts content, all with a very easy learning curve. Every other app that just lets you annotate, highlight, and draw are basic in comparison. Pair this app up with an Apple Pencil and you’ll realize you will forever have to use this combination, and no Surface or Chromebook or MacBook will ever suffice unless LiquidText finds a home on those platforms. If you’re working with PDFs and haven’t tried this yet, you’re living an incomplete life.

This app alone justifies the purchase of my iPad Pro

There is nothing else that’s like this app on any of my other devices. There is no app to my knowledge that does what this app does for my reading habit. I’m a person who needs to organize my takeaway in real time as I read along. The app allows me to pull out the highlights (in the case of a pdf with recognized texts) or cutouts (image kind of pdf), place them on the side workspace, and move them as I see fit. The little arrow in front of every “takeaway” takes you to the original. You can even free-hand draw on the workspace - make arrows, connections, mind maps, concept maps, etc. This is tremendous!! Honestly, I’m still learning the capabilities of this app, but the said features already made me very happy. And unhappy, too - when I use the Kindle or other reading apps, which all seem too inadequate now. I find myself trying to convert all my books and import them into LiquidText. It’s hard to go back to the old reading style.Whenever I have a question, I just hit the button with a question mark in the app. Within hours (sometimes just minutes) someone answers my question. Now that’s really classy. How many other apps do that? I don’t care if it’s a robot or real person (which I believe it is - if it’s a robot, it’s a very good one!) I feel the company cares. That’s really really good.

Wonderful reading app, but missing broad integration.

This is a terrific app for reading. Truly, one of the best. I am not giving it 5 stars for a few reasons, having to do with functionality and integration.1. It’s difficult to move items within the workspace, cause only items that are connected move as one. There is no equivalent to a lasso tool that allow big sets of items to move. Moreover, no free-hand drawing directly on the workspace can be moved. These make LT a little weak as a mind-mapper, something it is very close to being.2. Integration w Desktop. There is none w/o export to PDF. Since exported PDFs can’t be loaded back into LT (except as new PDFs with new workspaces, this isn’t really integration. Re-import also looses some original LT markup info). 3. Integration with paper. LT’s ideology is that we should live in a paperless world. But we don’t. Moreover, each medium serves its purpose. Sometimes, paper is the way to go, sometimes reading on a desktop, sometime on a tablet. Printing of the workspace from LT is awful. Despite the basic formatting options, there is just no telling what you will get: items are often cut between pages, centering changes, etc. Lots of ways to fix this. Please choose one and go with it.I love this app, but every time I open it I am frustrated, because what I do is to “locked into” LT. If you need to work in multiple context, not all of them involving an iPad, this is not an idea, choice.
