Happy with this app

I went to a scientific conference a few years ago where HRV was discussed. What sold me on it was a study that investigated complications and fatalities among organ donor recipients. Those patients who had the most extreme drops in HRV were, for the most part, the ones who had severe complications. Thus intrigued, I looked for different heart rate monitors and apps and eventually settled on a reasonably priced third party monitor and this app. As someone who analyzes lots of data for a living, I really like what they’ve done with this app. While I’d like to have more visibility on how they arrive at some of their scoring metrics, I do like the simple information you get from the morning analysis dashboard. I have indeed found correlations to changes in my HRV and many different stressors, such as overtraining, a change in diet, and illness. My only wish would be for it to share results with Apple Health. For now, though, I’m happy just manually entering my SDNN each day. Great job, guys!

This app could change your life for the better!

The Elite HRV Podcast has a wealth of knowledge which will educate you about your HRV and it can put you on the path to many positive life changes. What I REALLY like is the Biofeedback tool that lets you follow Dr. Leah Lagos 10-week Breathing Program. Listen to the July and August 2020 podcasts with Dr. Leah Lagos and then do yourself a favor and purchase a copy of her book “Heart, Breath, Mind” and do the 10-week breathing program, you won’t be sorry. The Elite HRV app gives you all the tools you need to follow the program. I like the Elite HRV CorSense finger sensor for taking morning HRV readings as it is convenient to slip it on your finger as soon as you wake up. I do prefer a heart rate chest strap (I used the Polar H10 with some conductivity gel to ensure a good signal) for doing longer breathing sessions/measurements. The CorSense finger sensor is sensitive to cold hands, so I find I get a more accurate signal from the chest strap. But when I first wake up and my hands are warm and I want to take a quick morning HRV reading, you can’t beat the convenience of the CorSense finger sensor and I have no problems with the signal quality. Cheers!

Functional, but a little wonky in terms of usability

The basic features are there. Specially the app will measure your HRV. Guided breathing is also part of the feature set as is long term monitoring (e.g. hours) support. You can also add meta-data such as notes, tags, energy levels, or glucose levels to an entry. Another great feature is that you can export your data for further analysis with a desktop app. With the exception of long recordings such analysis is probably not necessary because the app gives you all the usual frequency and time domain stats such as SDNN, LF and HF power, and RMSSD. Usability issues include no apparent way to search your entries. For example, I want to only look at the guided breathing entries. Also if you scroll back in time and click on an entry then return to the log view the app takes you back to the top of the list (i.e. today) and you have to scroll again. There are plenty of similar annoyances that I would expect to be missing from an app you pay for, but then this one is free so ... give it a try. It’s probably worth your time. Especially if all your looking for is training guidance.

Hoped for better but didn’t get it

I’ve been using this app for years going back before the release of their CoreSense measurement device (which is what I use and have since it came out). I was hoping this version would improve the reading stability (it didn’t). It also doesn’t support dynamic type. This forces me to manually adjust the iPhone’s text size down to use the app so the reading button is accessible on the screen. Then I have to go back and return it to the size I normally use. This is the only app of the more than 50 I have on the phone that doesn’t play nice with dynamic type. While the appearance is more modern and visually pleasing it appears to have lost a lot of the technical detail underlying the reading. This could have been solved with an advanced mode option to let people that want detail access it and those that don’t get the default simplified display. It has a problem with the BMI function- it displays a value that doesn’t make sense based on the units selected in the user profile. It says it imports data from Apple’s Health app (like sleep data) and I have it setup and confirmed that Elite HRV has access to everything but it doesn’t import the data.Basically the app is prettier but the functionality is not better and arguably worse. It begs the question of who and how much testing was done before the app was released.

Offers a lot, but . . .

I’m very new to this app and probably haven’t discovered all its ins and outs, but I feel that I’m struggling to figure it out. It doesn’t feel that intuitive and I feel that an app like this one should be. To get started the user works from a list, one this user struggled to find. Should the user begin each day with the morning 2 min check? I don’t know, and maybe it says somewhere, but if so, I’m not sure I could find it again. I stumbled on to discovering how to change the breathing balloon’s rate — good and cool once found. I began my meditation this morning with an unfocused gaze on the balloon thinking that the session was being recorded, but my wandering gaze eventually noticed (half way thru) that it wasn’t. A clearer notice like “click to record” might help. Also, locating the balloon at the top of the iPad screen would allow the user to use the balloon visually to pace the breath without watching the numbers. Addition of a simple set of tones would free the user from even having to look at the screen.

For those with chronic illnesses

Yes, many athletes will know all about using HRV for training. But for many with a chronic condition, like my better half, you will likely eventually find that there is a vagus nerve component to your condition, whether it is fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, small fiber peripheral neuropathy, PTSD, TBI, etc. So do yourself a favor. Find a compatible heart rate monitor (I use a Polar chest strap) and start measuring HRV every day. It will provide objective evaluation of your many other interventions (sleep, supplements, red light, mind/body). I’m amazed at the information and tools they make available while also respecting your data privacy. It may take you many years to find a provider that pushes you in this direction, or you may wander into this space on your own after researching specific forums or holistic health podcasts. But you’ll be glad you are using this app! And Jason’s podcast, The Elite HRV podcast, is very informative too.

Good and could/will be better

The concept of HRV and its measurement make this app worthwhile and important. It is also easy to use, and will be more so when the finger heart rate device comes out in a few months. What needs improvement is the explanation of HRV given, especially the difference in sympathetic and parasympathetic. Having read and reread the descriptions of these, I am still unclear of the real difference and how these differences are captured in a practical and useable way by HRV. This is exemplified and perhaps exacerbated by the explanations which pop up on the app after my morning measurement. Certainly for me, when I am told that everything is good because I measure in the green range does not reflect how I actually feel after my 45-50 minute elliptical session. I am sure that this will be improved as Elite continues to advance.

OKHRV - not elite for me just yet

I really want to like this app. I learned about HRV on a podcast and wanted to try improving my HRV. This app almost has what I need but some features don’t work, or don’t make sense and definitely room for growth.1) after doing a breathing biofeedback for 20 minutes you have to manually hit refresh to get your results. Repeatedly. Why should I need to hit refresh? It doesn’t know when the results are done? Or like this morning, I kept hitting it Refresh every 30 seconds and it never updated even after several minutes. If you hit the Home button below the Refresh button, thinking it will do the calculations and save it on its own, then it will just erase your results. No warning at all. Do not hit the Home button!2) some screens have multiple Save buttons, I’m never sure which one you are supposed to use3) some settings are not obvious and you have to hunt around4) this is just a request. To have sounds for the breathing biofeedback that go the length of the inhale, exhale and hold. That way you don’t have to look at the screen to check where you are in the exercise. You can just relax and follow along with your ears. For example, an inhale sounds that goes from a lighter sound to deeper sound until the inhale is done. Then in reverse for exhale. Some other sound for the hold.

Happy With Information Revealed

I have been interested in the uses and benefits of determining my HRV for health and analytical purposes and finally got the Polar H10 heart rate transmitter. I have been a runner and triathlon dabbler for over 30 years and am a strong believer in training with heart rate so learning to use HRV is a natural progression. Now to the app, I love it and am amazed all this convenience is provided for free. Thank you to Elite and the app team, this great information you are bringing to us. I am completely satisfied at this time and must say the podcasts are very helpful also. There is some great knowledge being shared back through the older episodes. Please keep up the great work. Also the website has important information about understanding, interpreting and acting on all your numbers. Two thumbs up.

Quit working and buggy

Purchased CorSense received3/20 used probably 5 times a week updated to current version of app and began having problems. CorSense didn’t want to connect, took many tries to get morning reading and noticed my phone battery draining very fast, as in wouldn’t last a day. Finally dawned on me it was this app, so I would force close it daily after taking reading. Difficulty connecting continued until CorSense would not light up at all and obviously not connect. Contacted elite after some back and forth got sorry but we’ll sell you another. Sorry elite but $165 for maybe 100 uses is too steep there are better choices. RE: developer response-obviously you didn’t even read the review as I wouldn’t buy another CorSense too expensive for too short life and buggy. I bought an Oura ring and it’s great. RE: 2nd developer response-it’s great you fixed the battery drain issue unfortunately my CorSense had stopped working way before that-its junk and a rip off
