User Reviews for 1Password: Password Manager

Getting buggier and buggier

I was so willing to let 1Password prove me wrong with version 8. I see the potential benefits from a shared core, and there have been many new features added, like passkeys and ssh keys. However, it just keeps getting buggier and buggier. Sometimes autofill doesn’t work on sites where I use it regularly. The passkey feature gets confused and often won’t offer a passkey if 1Password was locked when I first loaded the webpage. Items don’t sync well, and every time I open the app, my screen is covered with duplicate messages about the same item failing to sync. Sometimes the 1Password drop down shows up, but a lot of the time it doesn’t. Or it says “no saved passwords” for sites where I’ve filled passwords 1000s of times. The changes between 7 and 8 could have made 1Password more reliable, but it’s been months and it just gets worse and worse. I haven’t overcome the inertia to move to a different password manager yet, but I’m so disappointed that 1Password is pushing me that way. Don’t add new features if you can’t solve 6 month old bugs. Do better.

FaceID is still not working after 3 months

I like to think of myself as a pretty patient person, especially when it comes to technical issues and ESPECIALLY especially when it comes to iOS development. I have used 1Password for years now and I have loved it. It’s made my life easier and better. However, all that being said, I cannot in good conscience recommend this service to anyone as it stands. I’ve been unable to open my vaults using FaceID for 3 months now. Biometrics work fine on my Mac, but on iOS it continually does not work. Given that my password is long, this presents an issue. I’ve contacted support, they said multiple users are experiencing this issue (of course, they don’t maintain a “known issues” page to notify anyone) but did not have any answers other than to have me send them diagnostics. Multiple updates have been pushed but the issue remains, and it continues to add an unnecessary complication to what was once a painless experience. At this point, I’m more frustrated at the lack of meaningful response (like I said, I had to bother customer support to learn that this wasn’t a “me” thing), and annoyed that I’m paying for something that barely works. If they can fix this issue, this review will improve significantly, but I can’t help but feel a bit let down by a company that’s done great work in the past.

Should have done this sooner

I was a long time hold out to using a dedicated password manager because I didn’t just want another app to maintain. There is some startup capital you will have to invest (time, app learning curve, etc) but in the end it is so worth it. Love the integrations with browsers and my iPhone. Love the ability to customize password length and special character usage. It just feels better knowing my passwords are protected and randomized for each different application/resource. Now I truly only have to remember 1 password and not have to worry as much about a single data breach at random website exposing all my information to more sensible accounts. I will say some of the bugs mentioned in other reviews do exist (random crashes, asking to create/save a password two times) and are annoying but I assume the developers will work these out over time.

Step backwards, can’t use Face ID to unlock

I’ve been using 1Password since before they switched to subscription based. The interface has always been the best looking and wasn’t overly complicated, showing me what I needed. Most importantly, the app just worked and did what I needed it to do. I was excited for version 8 because it looked clean and modern. However, as soon as I installed it, I found out what a big disappointment it was. Launching the new version, it was cluttered with so much “news” and added recently used passwords which I disabled. I frequently use the app with Safari on my iPhone and iPad so having to constantly type in my password was a huge nuisance and really frustrating since I set the option for 2 weeks. I couldn’t even use Face ID unlock instead of typing out my password. Version 8 updated a few times and I hoped this Face ID unlock issue would be fixed but since it hasn’t, I’ve seen deleted version 8 off both my devices and reinstalled version 7. I don’t understand how the developers could release version 8 without realizing the amount of bugs and problems it has. With Apple making iCloud password more compatible on other devices, I really don’t see a reason for me to continue paying a subscription for an app that doesn’t even work properly.

Upgrading to 8 has only been a downgrade.

I mention all of the following negative remarks fully knowing I have the power to move apps, but I won’t so this review is a 3 but may as well be a 2: Overall, I miss 1Password 7 so much. When I generate and save new passwords from my iPhone’s browser or other apps then open 1Password 8, it re-prompts me to save each of the latest entries. This duplicates the entry, so I have to manually go back and scrub them. But I choose this route because it is never clear if my first save was successful at first or if it captured the wrong password string that I settled on. This has been the pattern for months. I will always appreciate how 1Password allows me to customize password key strings, so I am sticking with it as LastPass has their security/UI flaws and I don’t care for the other competitors for many reasons. But man, am I reconsidering. I wish many of us could go back to version 7. This new app version is awful for more reasons. It randomly dies on me mid save. Naturally, that hasn’t been fun. It is less intuitive to navigate; for example, I remember 7 made it easier to go to groupings like bank accounts. As someone who works with Product and UX teams in tech, the flaws in 8 are frustrating to experience. But to see no improvement to date is a whole other story. I thought time would resolve these pain points. But here we are. On a upgrade that feels like a downgrade.

Does Not Work on iOS17

If you want to repeatedly have to delete the app, because you are prompted to input your 1Password credentials, which aren’t accepted, and give you an infinite loop of password requests, then you’re in luck. Either skip 1Password, or skip iOS17. I’m sure it will be fixed, but I’ve already updated 1Password at least once if not twice since the iOS17 update. For something that is critical to your daily use of your mobile device/life, this is not an acceptable situation. They should have had this resolved long before iOS17 was released. EDIT: Still an issue. Although the issue stopped occurring on a daily basis, it is still happening. This time it seems likely a bug that occurred when I was prompted to fill credentials in Safari but 1Password required the password (which I have set for every 2 weeks). Infinite loop. Force delete and reinstall is the only solution. Horrible bug. Recommend using iOS17 built in password management if you are fully Apple ecosystem.EDIT: Long after iOS has been out now, issue is still a problem. Just today I’ve had to delete 1Password on my iPad twice because trying to launch the application goes immediately into the same password loop. No I am not interested in contacting your support. There is absolutely nothing unique about my iPad, or how I use 1Password, and the fact that this issue is constantly occurring, only in iOS, indicates that you haven’t updated your app to work correctly with iOS 17. Fix your app.

Buggy Since 8 release

I love 1Password and have used it for years both personally and professionally. However, since the 8 release, there’s been a handful of bugs that have been a bit irritating. Initially the lack of Apple Watch integration off the bat was a bit frustrating, thankfully they sort of fixed that but still has random flaws where the OTP doesn’t update consistently. Another issue I’ve been running into more recently on the phone app, if I switch from one app to another and then back to 1PW, it will open a random password file (not the one I was copying data from) as if I clicked “edit”… what’s scary is I don’t know if changes have been made to the password or not… I’ve been clicking “discard changes” just in case to get rid of it but this is frustrating because I haven’t tried to open any other files. This is treatable every time and it’s always a different file. 1PW, please resolve this one as it has the potential to create altered passwords that aren’t correct and could wreak havoc on shared passwords between team members. Please reach out if you need further details.

Great password manager and customer service

This is an excellent password manager. I’ve pretty much used all the major / popular ones and this one honestly makes me feel the most secure and actually seems to work best across devices. An example of that is when you update your password on one device it instantly is updated on all of them. I know that sounds basic but lastpass, Microsoft and apple password managers always seem to have a problem actually doing this which leads to a lot of frustration. It’s also just the best if you use lots of browsers and different types of devices since obviously apple and MS don’t exactly play well together. I had issues with Face ID not working previously as I’m sure many others experienced. 1Password customer service did everything they could to ensure i was a happy. They listened to and acknowledged the issue helped me with a workaround while they worked on an update for their app. They followed up afterwards on multiple occasions. really just took care of me at every level I’m impressed by their customer service and technical support. I highly recommend this app and company.

Step backward

Maybe I am just set in my ways (though generally I am always going for bath and new versions) but I find v8 to be a step back in usability. All I want it to do is display my passwords when I log in with an option to see software license, ids, etc. Instead I get the Home Screen and have to through a multi step process to see passwords. Maybe it is faster, but I never had an issue with the version. I don’t like the look of the new as much as the old and find it cluttered. The only thing I do I like is the ability to fill in user ids and passwords, but that doesn’t always work. So I now have a multi step process to get to passwords. Then the iOS version does not allow you to paste in email or password fields so I have to do that on my Mac. Why is there a “document” option when it includes everything from membership, passports, identities? I can’t delete from documents because it then deletes everywhere. The option to add other categories is nice but because everything ended up in documents I need to renter. Why is there no option to move items previously entered? I am going to switch to using Apple passwords. The only thing I really lose is the ability to export all passwords as an emergency backup.

I use to swear by this app.

I’ve never prior to the “8” version of this app coming out. I was still on the “7” version when out of nowhere my password did not work and I was locked out of the app. Annoying but I didn’t think anything of it because I’m pretty “techy” so I figured I could troubleshoot whatever issue there was. But I was sadly mistaken. It was suggested to download/upgrade the app to the “8” version which I did and then I had a bigger issue. I needed an “emergency kit” which of course I did not have. Then I was told to create another account and I will be assisted from there. I was made to believe that that there would be some kind of port/merge my old information over to this new account. WRONG again. Now I’m told that there is no way to reset/gain access to my old account. So basically, it was a clever way to get me to set-up a new account, I guess hoping I would just start all over and continue using the app. Because I’m sure they would t get many frustrated users to just start all over if this information was given upfront. I understand the need to protect information that’s the purpose of this app, but I feel as though I was taken on an unnecessary ride. So thank you I lost everything and sadly if I have to start over with protecting my passwords somewhere it’s not with this app.
