Great except how does scoring work...

Love this game, everything about it. Just one thing- I’m not sure how scoring works. For example, in tower mode, the word “lend” is 32 points and “sled” is 28 points. Both words are 3 consonants/1 vowel. The word “sore” is 20 points, 2 vowels/2 consonants. There was another 4 letter word (don’t remember which) worth 44 points. All of these point values assume no multiplier blocks/row clearing blocks/adjacent empty blocks. Maybe I’m missing something here. If so, will happily update my review. Otherwise, would appreciate an explanation of the scoring in the tutorial. Thanks.

Fun game to kill time, lacking word library tho

Pretty fun game to kill time, and stay awake. But the challenge system simply is meaningless. When you spell a word that you think is a word, but the system doesn’t recognize it, there’s a challenge button, but I’ve tried that with more than 5 words that I know for a fact exist. (Jetan, a chess variant for example) When there’s a word out there, and it can easily be identify by search the term and learn the meaning, it simply tells you the word does not exist. Somewhat disappointing when you work really hard to make the configuration falls in line to spell a word that exists, only to be denied by the lackluster library of the game.

Good Word Search

Lots of interesting game modes to mix it up. However, I got a nearly 3,000 point word in Tower Mode and realized it doesn’t matter how creative I get with finding words, it’s all about combining the multiplier tiles to get a high score in Tower Mode. If you can’t knock it out of the park with a multiplier tile (or two) there’s basically no incentive to continue a round and there are only three multiplier tiles. On scoring, it explains how words are scored in the tutorial but it would be nice to see each individual letter’s value on the tile so we know exactly what to aim for. Instead you have to outline a word first to see its total value.

Great for strategy fans

I love word games like crossword puzzles and rearranging letters to create words. This one’s a bit unique in that there’s a heavy dose of strategy involved for “search” and “tower” modes. I find myself taking a long time to think through each move, almost like I’m playing chess. Unfortunately I don’t have the patience for that kind of methodical, slow-moving strategy, so it’s not a perfect match for me. It doesn’t help that I sometimes have trouble selecting the right letters, especially diagonally. Although I am liking “puzzle” mode and overall I appreciate the concept, with the bite-sized games. I also like the nice, clean design.

Same puzzle repeats time after time.

Please. Fix. Your. App. I go back to it occasionally, but it still oftentimes repeats the same puzzle. I will work one puzzle and then press Quit. It is still likely to repeat the same puzzle next time. Requesting again to fox this. Update: Tried some more. This app keeps repeating puzzles, if not consecutively, then every two or three games. Original: Boring. Between word swipes a little tag pops up and everything pauses. Also it is not hugely different from other word games. Sound effects are horrible. I am still wondering why app developers think we like obnoxious dings, clangs, and clicks.

Buggy

So far, challenge always says not a word. I play multiple word games and these words are considered valid. The really frustrating bug is when there are one or more columns getting near the top, all 4 and 5 words come back as too short. For example, the Spelltower said the word “hired” was too short. It got worse the longer I played Spelltower. It got to the point where I was having to give up on every game, because all words were labeled as too short. There was no way to proceed when no word was accepted. This was my first time playing. I won’t try again unless this is fixed. It is a shame, because I love word games.

Love the game, but…

First, if you love words, you should give this a try. It’s challenging and addictive, especially if you just want to unwind after a long, crazy day. I recommend it to everyone. With that said, the ability to challenge whether or not a word is real is frustrating. I found tendre during a game, and while an online dictionary admits it is archaic, it is in fact a real word that still gets some use in historical fiction. This game doesn’t recognize the word, and leaves me wondering if I’ll run into other words like this as I go along. It also seems to accept some proper nouns but not others. All-in-all though, still a fun game.

Fun game but a few small things

The main thing I don’t like is that when I try to adjust in app volume, it doesn’t let me. The slider doesn’t register at all it only gives option of turning it off. But when I click to disable sound it doesn’t actually disable it? This could be user error and if it is I totally understand I just wanna know how to adjust the sound.Other than that it’s a fun game, simple. I’ve been enjoying it a lot.

Rules on “too short”

In playing the puzzle, when you do some 3 letter words they’re acceptable. Other times 5 letter words are “too short.” Adding an S sometimes doubles the points. While sometimes it makes it “too short.” Cap was acceptable for 24 points, but cape was “too short.” The rules don’t really make very clear sense. It’s fun. I’m just already frustrated when I’m trying to clear higher towers, and I can make perfectly acceptable 5 letter words—only they tell me they’re too short. While I can make a 3 letter somewhere else on the board, and it’s cool.

Seems a bit rigged

Ever since scoring 9,951 on “Puzzle,” and trying to beat that score, the game seems to let me reach the 4,000 or 5,000 range before handing me rows of letters that are utterly unusable. The game now gives me rows with nothing but consonants, or vowels with a minimum letter count of 6 (surrounded by more consonants) or chunks of contiguous and diagonally-connected letters that are all the same. I’m really enjoying the game, and I’m inclined towards word puzzles. I’d really like to hit 10,000 or more. If I can do that I’ll write a new review and call my experience a fluke.

Description

The original best-selling mobile word game, reimagined! Pick your words wisely! As you play, more tiles rise from the bottom of the screen!

It'll take all of your lexicological wits, and tactical know-how to keep your columns down. If any letters make it to the top row, it's game over. Classic modes Daily Tower, Tower, Puzzle, Rush and Zen are all back and packed with brand new BONUS TILES that double (or more!) word values. Joining them is the brand new Search mode, plus ExPuzzle, Double Puzzle, Bubble Puzzle, and Blitz mode! That’s eleven modes in all! Plus iCloud Backup, Highscores reported for games even while in-progress, detailed statistics for every mode, Game Center leaderboards, and achievements. ————————— It’s pretty wild to be revisiting my first hit game, SpellTower. I can't believe it's almost 10 years since it released. The first iPhones it ran on had a 3.5 inch screen and 320 x 480 resolution! I literally did a double-take at that resolution when I looked it up. A funny part about having a hit game is people talk to you about it. With SpellTower I heard about grandparents playing the game every morning to keep their minds sharp, parents playing it with their kids, expectant mothers playing it to get through morning sickness, and countless sightings of strangers playing it on subways, planes — even elevators. I got into games because I wanted to connect with people in a positive way. I wanted to help people think critically and come away with more than they arrived with. Games felt like a way to do this on a huge scale, but the stories I heard from SpellTower players taught me that games do so much more for people than I ever expected. I’m deeply grateful that SpellTower has been able to be something special for so many people, and I think that’s why so many people have shared it with friends, loved ones, and strangers on elevators. Even though SpellTower is a game I made, it’s really barely mine anymore. The experiences and love I had for the game has been outstripped by its audiences a thousandfold. I thought a lot about all the experiences that people have had with the game when I was designing this new version. I hope it gives everyone who’s loved the game a reason to pick it back up again and share it amongst their friends and family. -zach
