Lacking dark mode, no auto-add?

Great, but desperately needs a dark mode. Please! This app is blinding me. Wish I could study more in the evening without needing to invert colors through accessibility settings. Also, bring back the ability to auto-add words to the review queue from the decks. Not everyone wants to “learn” them first. Just introduce them automatically in review mode and allow us to set daily limits between 1 and 100. Can be a totally optional feature and not enabled by default. This old (original?) way of doing things was way better IMO for some language-learners. Happy to change my rating if I had these features.

Amazing

Kanji stroke recognition is good, and it helped me remember words so much more efficient. I can also practice the vocab for each of my textbooks which is so convenient. Although, in the my words list, you can only search using kana, so if you dont remember a word, you have to look through the whole list. Also great because the subscription also applies to the chinese version and it has the same benefits.

A pretty great studying resource, but..

I really wish that instead of unlocking more lessons through a subscription, you could do a one-time payment. There’s just no way for me to justify paying $8/month for an app, even if it’s as good for studying as this is. Aside from that, I appreciate the selection of free lessons that are available. I think for a completely free selection, there’s a good amount to get someone started. The settings for recognizing text (snapping to strokes vs free strokes) are a huge deal for me and I appreciate the ability to change them without hassle. The stroke recognition + free stroke writing (instead of snapping), with hirigana katakana and some kanji all in the same app is exactly what I was looking for, and this one functions smoother than other similar ones I’ve used. This would be a perfect app if there simply was a one-time full unlock purchase for some of the later lessons (mainly the more advanced ones, such as ones for the N5-N1 etc) instead of a monthly subscription. I wouldn’t be opposed to paying if it was a one-time fee to unlock all current lessons/future lessons, or even paying by the lesson (i.e. pay $1 per set).

easy to use app, but they're building the wrong features

i've been doing skritter every day for a few months now. i really like the studying interface, for the most part.but there is one thing that's very annoying. the deck management UX is extremely clunky. from the home screen, adding a new card is 6 taps and takes several decisions. you can't search your words by definition. you can't search for new words by a partial match (for example if you don't know a verb's ending).the real kicker is: if you add a bunch of words but forget to save your list, and Skritter gets restarted before you come back to it, then all the words you just added are lost. you have to add them back over. this is a huuuge pain.so: this app is fine for learning japanese vocabulary, but if you use it daily you're going to get super frustrated with the deck management system.

Great for that extra reinforcement

I don’t know if it’s the best learning approach for a brand new Japanese learner but I have found it to be very helpful. A lot of people just focus on reading comprehension and memorizing kanji readings, but the ability to write kanji really adds to my confidence that I actually “know” the kanji and don’t need to rely on seeing it to recognize it. The app does what I need it to do but it could really shine with a few additional features. - Number of upcoming reviews would be helpful to make sure you pace yourself - My words tab could be enhanced with color coding, or some way to identify leeches/problematic cards Overall I enjoy the app and have been using it daily as a part of my studies

helpful, but issues syncing

Nice app, an easy way to get writing practice in when I don’t have my notebook. I like how it teaches characters, and the SRS is helpful to make sure I’m reviewing what I need to know. The only issue is that it’s not always syncing up words that I’ve learned or starred between my iPhone and iPad. I do most of my studying on my iPad, but if I open my iPhone sometimes it will say that I haven’t learned words that I had learned. The learned kanji issue seems to mostly be gone after the latest update, but it still won’t sync starred words.

Best stroke recognition but bad SRS

(Tl;DR is below)First, the 3 good points I like about this app:(And then I’ll get to my gripe)1. Best stroke recognition algorithm bar none, it always manages to grade how I wrote kanji. That’s nice cause one of the hardest things about practicing kanji with pen and paper is judging if you drew the character so it looks correct and so it was done with correct stroke order.2. I love how with one subscription price, you get both Chinese and Japanese character apps.3. I love how the design of the app is simple and it’s very plug and play. But my major gripe is the SRS:As others have said, the app doesn’t seem to review earlier cards quite frequently enough for me to remember. This app needs a more customizable SRS to it, more like Anki or most other Flashcards apps. My workaround with this has been to use the grab-bag of kanji “continuous” mode for an additional 15-20 minutes but those kanji seem to be in random order. (If they aren’t I’ll be pleasantly surprised. )TLDR: great stroke recognition but my forgetful brain aches for a better and more customizable SRS

Learn to write hiragana katakana & kanji

Even though the app tries to get you to be a paid monthly subscriber, you can skip and first start learning your hiragana, katakana, and beginning kanji decks for free. After this, if you really want to get serious, pay a monthly fee and learn the more intense kanji. The app says that any premium kanji you learn, you can forever keep, even after you unsubscribe. Overall, this is an awesome app and compliments apps such as Pimsleur which helps with conversational language speaking. 頑張って!(Ganbatte!)

Essential for my studies

I use Skritter and WaniKani for vocabulary and kanji study. They compliment each other perfectly if your goal is to be able to actually write Japanese. Honestly, it helps so much with memorization too. I almost never get any characters confused that look alike because I’m able to differentiate at a “radical” level and wrote memorization comes into play. Having said that, I use Skritter for vocab only since learning just the kanji characters isn’t necessary because of the vocab practice. I keep both WaniKani and Skritter “levels” synched so if I learn 5 words in WaniKani, then I learn the same ones in Skritter the same day. I try and learn 10 vocab a day in WK and then all of the kanji/radicals immediately so it ends up being more than 10 in WK sometimes but never more than 10 in Skritter(remember only vocab for Skritter). It just becomes too overwhelming for me in Skritter if more than 10 is done(gotta get grammar in there too). I’m not trying to break records for fastest completion speed. I expect I’ll be done with WK in roughly two years. Then I’ll move on to something else likely and Skritter will be apart of it.

Skritter doesn’t rest, they’re continually reaching for expanded functionality and innovation

When Skritter started, they led a simpler playing field. With tech advances, it seemed other were innovating where Skritter rested. But all is most definitely not idle under the “hood”. They’ve been re- designing and innovating for years now in what must be a daunting task. And to see the betas, they’re been growing leaps and bounds in abilities to come.

Description

Practice Japanese writing with Skritter, whether you have a strong grasp of written Japanese and want to remember the characters better or are a beginner who doesn’t know where to start. Skritter has existed for more than 10 years, and for a good reason: our learners are amazing! They help us with feedback, which allows us to create what we think is the best Japanese writing app out there!

Japanese writing uses three different scripts; Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Skritter offers all three and you can learn them through our “decks” (similar to a card deck) based on topics and difficulty. Deck examples: - Survival Japanese (for traveling in Japan) - Food and drinks (learn to understand the menus at your favorite Japanese restaurant with delicious sushi, ramen, and other dishes) - Cultural topics like Samurai Japanese - More advanced topics like foreign policy - And many more… First, you learn a character’s meaning, then practice drawing it and before you know it, you’ll want to learn thousands of characters, and words like these two happy users: “If I could only keep one app on my iPod, this would be it without a doubt. Skritter will change your life!” ― Wendy Werneth, UN Translator “Learning to write characters has never been so fun. From writing zero to 2000+ characters in six months!” ― Brian Jackson, Economist Have questions, problems, or feedback? We would love to hear from you.
