Great app for reading; flash card app needs some work

This is a rating for Manabi, which is actually a combination of two different apps, one is a reader for people practicing reading in Japanese, and the other is a flash card application to help you learn the new words you read in the first app. In my opinion, the first app is excellent! It has a wide variety of easy to read articles, and all you have to do is tap on any word in the app in order to see its meaning in English, as well as its pronunciation, and some sample sentences. If you run across a word that you don’t understand, you simply select “make flash card” as an option, and you can create a separate flash card automatically in the second appThe second app, on the other hand could be a lot easier to use, and more helpful. You don’t have the ability to control which cards you’re practicing, you don’t have the ability to make sets, and you don’t even have the ability to change the “flip” direction of the cards (as far as I’m aware). There are a number of different Japanese flash card apps that are much better, and unfortunately the Manabi apps don’t have the ability to transfer your sets from there to those other flash card apps. So I think there’s a lot of work to be done on the second app, but the reader is quite enjoyable and I use it almost daily.

Great App

A very helpful app but I wish the font was more standard and legible, or at least offer an option to change the font. I feel like the current font makes it more difficult to read for people still new to Japanese.Edit: very quick response from developers and it seems already updated and much more legible. Fantastic app with great support.

Amazing really

Wow this app is a game changer. Thank you so much developers! Kind of surprised this isn't ridiculously popular. I'm reading books and checking the news on it constantly and love the progress tracking AND the flash card program (while slightly less customizable than I'd like) really all double down on this method. You only need this program theoretically to get to fluent comprehension. Although of course you're going to want to mix things up. Love it and thanks again.

Helpful Practice Tool

My biggest wish would be to incorporate a dark theme in the main menu. I do most of my reading at night, and the white screen is annoying. I haven't looked at every site yet, but I appreciate how many are included. The range of difficulties seems nice as well. I haven't done much searching for it yet, but it would be nice to be able to add our own sites and blogs... Maybe that's already possible, and I need to actually find out how.

Flawed subscription and account system

The app itself works quite well. Occasionally crashes when you’re reading a long imported text, but when it works it works. That said, I haven’t been able to login to my account due to some errors, and after 4 months of attempting to contact the creator for support I still haven't gotten an answer. It’s difficult to recommend the subscription in its current state.

3.0 update is excellent

Anki integration is a huge game changer and is what brought me over from the reader app I had been using previously.I just tested adding an Anki card and everything worked smoothly and intuitively— it’s a really big deal that I can finally one-tap add cards to Anki from my smartphone, since no other reader app on the iOS store does this to my knowledge. I’m glad the price is so reasonable, too— will definitely be recommending to friends! My one request to the developer: Is it possible to add a “hiragana only” option for adding to a field in Anki? For example, say I want to add the phrase 仮眠をとる to my anki deck. The only options right now are expression (仮眠をとる) and expression with reading (仮か眠みんをとる). It’d be nice to have an option for かみんをとる because of the odd way my Anki card template is set up. Just a little nitpick. Congrats and many thanks for getting 3.0 released!

Love the variety and lookup

Mana I is an interface to several Japanese websites with various styles of reading. The two things I like best are the variety of readings, both level and topic and the integrated dictionary. The only thing I noticed that I’m not so sure about is that when you go to NHK Easy, it has pictures (and sound) that are missing when you go through Manabi.

Love this app

Im trying to use everyday! It has a more advanced selection than other apps like it. The customer support is nice and attentive. Only thing that could make the app better is native readers. So that you can listen to all your book marks while driving. It will help with listening comprehension ( my worst skill) and tone while speaking. Other apps have this but not for advanced material. Even if they were slow at implementing this, I would pay for it.

Exactly what I needed without realizing it!

If you’re an immersion learner, this is a must use for the reading portion. A “killer app” as one might refer to into in like 2007 or something. It’s often recommended to use the SRS in addition to simple sources such as NHK Easy, as well as sentence-mining, which are all built into the Manabi framework. If you’re like me, you put off reading because it feels more daunting than just sitting and watching. If you’re struggling with that like I was, this app is a no-brainer. What’s more, I imagine it maintaining it’s usefulness through to fluency and beyond.

素晴らしいアプリ!

I’ve been using this app to practice my reading skills and it’s simple yet has done wonders for me. I find the kanji tracking feature very convenient as it helps me to see where I stand in terms of literacy. The subscription price is more than fair, other reading apps have such ridiculous prices for so little features, so I appreciate you keeping this one reasonable. What I would like is more distinction between known and unknown words, it gets tiring having to click every word to make sure I marked them as known. Keeping them highlighted could work. A vertical text option would be fun to add too and if it’s possible, could you perhaps add sign-in from Apple and/or Google?
