Something gone wrong.
For a couple of months now there is no train information in the app. Any two stations I set, it just says ‘no more trains today’ regardless of time of day. Timetable info is blank too. I’d figured this might just be some temporary glitch, but now that I’m starting back to commuting, it still hasn’t come back. It would be nice if this app worked, because it’s better than any of the other Caltrain apps I’ve tried.
Real-time departures
As I was rushing out the door this morning wondering if I would make my train and, if not, what my next option was, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the app has been updated to show real-time departures. Life hanging improvement!With the commuter package I can also bookmark my usual stops but can also see a full schedule. I was also able to set up monthly Clipper card tag on/off reminders. Very easy to use.
Useful app, but updates could be handled better.
This certainly a useful and well made app. As someone that rides Caltrain often, it’s good to have this app. My only feedback is that schedule updates could be handled more efficiently. Currently, it seems like any schedule update or correction requires a full app update, which can be delayed due to apple’s review process. Using some kind of API or even just a JSON file in an S3 bucket would seemingly make for simpler and more timely updates.
Great app
Very useful app for all of your CalTrain needs! Here’s a tip... when you’re on the schedule tab, you can tap the top bar’s label that says “Full Schedule” and it will provide you with a scrollable list of all trips of the day related to your route. That could be a bit more intuitive/obvious for the user (normally toolbar text isn’t obviously tappable), but hey, at least it’s there. If it were up to me, the whole list would be scrollable above and behind the route picker widget.Also I messaged the app developer, and to my surprise he or she had a really impressive response time... almost immediate.
You’re better off using google maps
This app is only useful for if you want to know the basic schedule without any modifications, and even then it’s out of date sometimes. The caltrain schedule is fickle and changes often. I’ve been stuck at a caltrain stop three times in the last month because I relied on this app and the times were wrong. Once the schedule was different because it was memorial day and I waited late at night by myself for an hour completely unaware of this schedule change. Please just use google maps — that’s far more accurate and up to date anyway
Useful but notifications setup is incomprehensible
I use the app all the time and it’s very very useful. The auto switch on main screen for the correct direction of commute is a delightful thing. I bought the paid app for the de-training notifications, to remind me to swipe clipper card. I have never been able to get it to work after repeated convo’s with the developer. That UX needs to change, it’s incomprehensible. But overall happy with the app, happy to have contributed towards it’s development.
Great app with some improvement needed
I love this app for commuting and find that it is up to date and has great functionality. The rider advisory feature is very useful. There are a few minor things I’d like to see improved over time. I do wish the app would suggest any train options that might get you to your destination quickly even if that means transferring (for example, if I take the train north 1 stop from ‘point A’ and then south to my final stop ‘point B,’ I get home sooner than if I wait 25 more mins for the next direct train from ‘point A’ south to ‘point B’). Also, when in the “schedule” view I cannot scroll to see trains later than the ~5 soonest upcoming trains and instead have to switch to “timetable” view. This is fairly annoying if the time I am interested in viewing is juuuust out of sight. Finally, in “timetable” view when switching between north and south, if I have the page scrolled to a specific time, it changes back to the first train of the AM rather than keeping my spot. Overall, these are all small things, but improving them would highly increase the user experience and functionality of the app.
There are others, but this is the one you want
I've been using this app for 3+ years. Simple, effective, no frills app. There have been a number of schedule changes lately and the developers have kept up nicely. At some point I must have purchased the commuter package, handy.The advisory alerts seem to be hit or miss, but that might be my alert settings. It seems like some sort of crowd sourcing of delays could be an interesting addition, although probably a ton more work that would complicate a simple and useful app.
Features I'd like to have
I heavily use the app and as I depend on it more there are some features I would like to have added.Creating a calendar event from the schedule would allow me to showinthe calendar booked time but also allow me to set reminders/alarms.As a cofunction, being able to link to schedule info from a calendar event would make travel planning smoother. For instance, creating an event from a web page or email could automatically indicate travel info on caltrain. Some akin to generating a map from an event address.In fact, extend this to contacts as well?Perhaps being able to generate alarms directly from the app as well?Well I am now tired of typing on my phone so this is the list for now.Looking forward to the future.
Great when the trains are on time
This app is great for day to day usual train info. When there is a breakdown/accident/delay the advisories are insufficient and do not provide a reliable estimation of wait time. Also the schedule does not change according to these delays at the scheduled time of arrival it just keeps showing all the trains arriving on time. The conductors do not always explain what’s happening on delay days sometimes trains stop at more or all stops because of the delay and sometimes not. I could have gotten on the correct train and saved an hour or more time on multiple occasions if either the app or the conductor had given better information.
