Pay to win or pay a sub $10 a month to play a none mmo

I was really excited when I saw this game, since with Baldur’s Gate 3, around the corner it fills a gap. I'm ok with the game taking the adventuringbout for combat, it's a bit repetitive, but it's entertaining. The main reason I'm giving this game 1 stars, is that it's a pay to win trap. You have to pay $9.99/mo but there are no mmo features to it, that's $120 a year for a mobile game, that has no exploration or other means to make money to pay for upgrades. I basically got to the point where I can't pay for upgrades because there is there is no way to make gold unless you spend gems. I've played D&D games for over 30yrs and I have never played a game where you need to pay to level up your character. I'm just very disappointed at the developers for doing such a rip off. I would have preferred to pay $15 flat to own the game, and get around the money time gates, so I could progress my character. But there is no way in hell I'm going to subscribe to a game at $10 a month... Much less have to pay real money to level characters or buy them. And please Developers, if you are going to leave a comment saying ”we read all your comments and feedback... Blah blah blah.” please don't. I'm surprised wizards of the coast licensed their title to you guys to make this game a rip-off for the players.

Not quite what you’re looking for

I never write reviews. I feel like I should for this. The gameplay and leveling is fun and it took a long time to hook me, but I’ve been putting in a lot more time recently and my god I’m ready to uninstall! The matchmaking is non-existent. Which is a problem because once you reach a block during the campaign, and need to level up to move on because you get one hit killed by enemies, battles are VERY important. The problem is... a lot of people shell out money to get a lot of amazing gear. I do not. I will get put in battles constantly with people multiple levels above me who can kill my whole team in one hit. Or people equal or lower levels with better gear who can kill me in one hit. 10% or less of the time I have a fight that’s interesting, 2% of the time I blow someone out of the water. The rest I’m toast. As soon as the battle loads I know exactly if I will win or lose and just let them kill me. It’s a waste of time and resources.I might deal with it better if I could actually pick my team. Cant. Randomized based on your level and number of heroes leading me to lose fights I would have won. Sad part is a lot of events (Test of Might for example) is the same thing. I think I maybe get 1 chest in my free tries but then it cost in game currency, or real money if you’re out, to try more. It’s a constant loop of being under leveled to do anything and a slog to get to where you need to be.

Great game; terrible matchmaking

I love the Forgotten Realms universe, and this game certainly has a lot of feel for Dungeons and Dragons. However, there are pay walls in the game that inhibit your progress as a free player, and while I know the studio needs to generate a profit to provide updates to the product; it could be quite a deterrent to new players. I wish that they would have allowed the player to generate their own, but I also get that would have added more complexity to the game that might have been out of the scope for this project. Most of the pre-generated characters are fairly good, but I question some of the class/race combinations. All that said, the game is pretty fun, but the PVP Battle Mode has atrocious matchmaking. Once you get out of the first arena, it becomes quite clear that you simply will just not win some of the matches because you’ll get matched against other parties that severely out-level your party and you are forced to accept a loss. The leveling system also leaves a bit to be desired because of the sheer amount of in-game currency you have to generate in order to level a character. I shouldn’t have to pay money to level up if I have sufficient experience to reach next level when I already had to pay money to get the experience to reach the point where I could level up. I think if they made some changes then the game would be much better, but I doubt that they will because they want to garner a profit.

A Decent D&D Game ... BUT ...

I enjoy this game. Good official D&D video games that capture the turn-based fun of the actual game are very hard to come by for some reason. This is not a perfect example - but it’s close. I am a huge fan of D&D and I like the elements of this game. It is very generous with the rewards and the trading system (gems for more gold, etc) is also very fair. And I LOVE that is not a time sink. It’s a great game to pull up on your phone and have a quick battle when you’ve only got 5 or 10 minutes to spare while you’re waiting for your ride, or waiting for class to start, etc. I have two main gripes about this game, however. 1. A huge part of the fun and appeal of D&D is building and customizing your character. I would have liked to see an option to custom build my own charters as opposed to just having a small handful of pre-made characters to choose from. I would even be ok if it was an in-app purchase option. Which brings me to my second issue/concern: 2. The VIP subscription. Come on! I do enjoy this game very much - but $9.99 a month is a little insulting, don’t you think??? Seriously - Netflix costs less than that! Just a suggestion for the developers - I really don’t think a lot of people want another monthly fee. Please consider making smaller, one-time offers (i.e. add this VIP reward to your chest for $1.99) - something like that.

Unimaginative and tedious

I was initially hooked on this game for a couple of weeks - as the idea of a mobile D & D game sounded great. However, the game is a predicable and unimaginative mobile game. The main quests are predictable, with the setup remaining the same and the only changes being the backgrounds and the faces on the monsters. There are only a few quests, and to advance your characters enough to complete them, you will either have to spend a significant amount of money or spend weeks/ months tediously completing the same challenges over and over again. The battle system regularly matches you up against opponents who are significantly more or less advances that you as to make the battles outcomes predetermined. When you are matched up against a somewhat equal opponent, winning is about whether you are lucky enough to be the one to have more of your characters special abilities work than the other person, as there is no real strategy. The system is glitchy enough that even with good internet service, you will periodically get timed out on battle moves. If you like randomly click on your screen with a D & D background theme, then this game is for you. If you actually like playing D & D or quality games, I would pass on this and play D & D with your friends or play the board or mobile versions of Lords of Waterdeep. Disappointed that Wizards of the Coast lent their name to this game.

Needs a lot of rebalancing / rework.

I wanted to like this game.. and when it’s fun, it’s fun, however the fun parts are often overshadowed by glaring flaws or terrible design choices.PVE - challenges. this part of the game is fun when it’s not being gate-kept by a currency buy-in to play. The timer for the “free challenge” should be much shorter considering the disparity in difficulty at times between the lower level challenges and the highest level you can currently do. The timer on the random bonus events should not exist and should act as an incentive to get gear / treasure / xp.PVP - matchmaking is absolutely horrible which makes the special events unplayable unless you’re a masochist with a lot of time on your hands.PLEASE, devs... tell me how being pit against teams that are 200 or so points higher on a ladder or who grossly out-level my characters is even remotely balanced. 1 out of maybe 20 matches, the tables are turned... and there is no satisfaction in curb stomping someone when the situation is on someone else. 1 out of maybe 20 matches, I win the initiative roll (echoing what others have said)- an option needs to be added to dump chests. As someone else mentioned, your limited storage for chests means that if you play regularly, your reward slots are more often than not clogged with junk chests that you need to use premium currency to unlock and get rid of.

Side Game Took Over My Main Game, Only 1 Complaint

Update: since the update on August 27/28 to fix bugs, I've been unable to get into the game. Get stuck on the loading screen with different tips popping up, Gamecenter login sometimes popping up, but wait 2-10 minutes and it's still stuck multiple times. Tried restarting my phone. I'd try deleting & re-installing the app but afraid I'll lose my progress since that would delete stored data too. Meant for this to be my side game next to Elder Scrolls Blades when I didn't have as much time to play but this took over as my main game. Gameplay feels much more rewarding and some of the events have been great (double/Triple gold/gems). I don't understand people complaining about a grind at level 4-5, it's only starting to feel grindy since I hit level 7-8. I never got VIP nor converted gems to gold and I always had a ton of gold until now, wasted thousands upgrading crap gear to level faster. Last update vastly improved the dungeons, far more worth doing than PvP but have a chance at getting very high level chests rarely through PvP.My only complaint is I have connection issues far too consistently, never had it this bad in any other game. Most dungeons and almost every PvP battle I'm losing connection & needing to reconnect, not terrible for dungeons but absolutely ruins PvP since I miss a turn & have 1/2 time for all future turns + usually start lagging a few seconds so I can't do anything.

Needs Work

As much as I wanted to love this game, there’s too much wrong with it to make it worth playing. The main problem is excessive grinding and repetition without any progress. Get ready to fight the same enemies with the same low-level characters over and over and over again, each time gaining about a fifth of the gold you would need to upgrade one piece of equipment for one character so that you can one day advance the meager storyline one more step. I’m an RPG fan for life, so I’m game for some tedious grinding, but this is absolutely over-the-top.The multiplayer mode needs work too. For one, you don’t get to choose which of your characters to use. Secondly, you’ll either face off against an AI opponent with level 1 fighters or a human opponent with fighters all one level above your highest level fighter. So, instead of critical decision-making determining the outcome of battle, it’s who bought more gold. The gameplay is lacking in depth. There’s no exploration. There are no maps. Everyone is situated on a very small grid. Left and right movement is completely irrelevant too, so you are either in range or out of range. That’s it. I play mobile games all the time, and there’s no point in dumbing down the combat this much. Mobile gamers can handle the same amount of complexity as PC gamers. There’s so little detail in this game, I could play it from across the room.

Four years behind

There is some entertainment value to be had. However, so many parts of this game are just absurdly difficult. The guild raids are woefully hard. I am all level 10 or 11 and sometimes unable to advance past the first room. I can only think it is designed to push you into spending more money. I do pay the monthly 9.99 for VIP, but that really does not get you anywhere. The pvp is also behind the times, particularly when it comes to events. When advancing to the second level in pvp events you can only lose three times, but they just match you with those around you. Well, that system puts you are losing around half of your matches. So, with three strikes I am looking at around six wins, which gets you very little. Again, seems to be designed to force you to large purchases to upgrade weapons and characters. All in all there is some entertainment to be had, but it is a wholly disappointing product from Wizards of the Coast that seems like it is years behind.I dropped this to one star after giving it several months. It is just a terrible game. The only path to success is dropping 20 plus a month on extras. Not to mention the entire pvp system. There has been zero effort to make it anything close to equitable. Success in pvp is the only way to really get ahead, but it takes cold hard cash. Do yourself a favor and look for something else.

I really want to like this game

Being a huge fan of D&D’s Forgotten Realms setting, I was pretty excited when I found this game. I won’t rehash grievances with the current mobile game monetization model found everywhere, so here are the specific issues. PvP - you can’t surrender, so you’re forced to slog through a match you’re clearly underpowered for. PvP - the skip turn button is replaced four silly dragon emoticons, eliminating a strategic option. Sometimes your best move is not moving. PvE - get ready for the slow grind. There are only 19 levels in the game, so you’ll struggle for even minor improvements after 5/6 level. This game uses time gates versus energy. So in theory you can play as much as you’d like, but you can only grind xp, not gear without paying. So grinding 8,000+ experience 5 or 10 points at a time, not thanks. My final comment is regarding monetization. I don’t mind spending money on a game, but at least make me feel like it’s worth it. Unlock a new character 2 months early for $50 USD?!? Are you kidding? Even with the the gear packs and occasional exclusive events, I personally don’t see the value. And don’t bother with the subscription, I bit and the VIP drops I seemed to constantly decline appear much less frequently. Anecdotal, but I honestly felt ever third or fourth drop I’d see a VIP drop, now it seems to appear maybe every 5th or more.
