User Reviews for Teen Counseling

Great helpful service for teens

I started teen counseling a few years ago when I started high-school, and it has helped SO much. The best thing about it is there is no awkwardness. The counselors understand they are talking to teenagers who are going through a lot, and treat you as such. And if you find someone who is not as helpful as you wished, its easy and free to switch to another counselor. There are worksheets they will give you to help you reflect on yourself outside of the lesson, which can just be a good reminder of what you talked about each session and you’re putting full thought into each worksheet. It’s very helpful, no matter what you’re going through, and there are so many people who can help you with the specific issues you have, whether it be suicide.. depression.. anxiety.. you name it.

very annoyed and disappointed

I have never before written a review for anything but I am just so annoyed that I need to. I am a teen who was super excited to finally meet my counselor and finally just start talking to someone professionally. I filled out the whole questionaire, my mom set up the payments on a Tuesday afternoon. I matched with a counselor, whom I read her whole bio and I was super excited to get to start working with because she seemed like a perfect match. A couple of days go by and she has not reached out to me in anyway. My mom, confused emails her and she says that “she is not taking in any new clients and will get us set up with a new counselor asap.” My mom then replies back with a little bit of feedback saying that the program should only set teens up with counselors that are available. She replies that she forgot to turn her availability off and that it is her fault and again would get me setup with someone asap. It has been days, with still nothing changing. My mom has paid for a full week with me having no counselor. I am very disappointed and annoyed.

Wonderful!!

As a parent of a teen making good use of this, I can highly attest to its usefulness. A lot of reviews seem to be negative referring to either the cost or the fact that there is some parental involvement within the process. These are licensed professional counselors that are not only helping our teens, but earning a living as they do so. They should be compensated for their time. Secondly, as a parent, I created an account for my teen, but we each have separate access to her counselor. Sessions with her counselor are private and protected by doctor/patient confidentiality. Teens, like it or not, are still minors. I know not every teen will be equally supported by their parents as they seek professional help. For that, I am truly grieved. However, there are governing liabilities that Teen Counseling needs to legally adhere to, and this is one.As to our experience, its been nothing but positive! I’m so glad my daughter has a safe space to work through issues that have been easier for her to discuss with her counselor than me. The price, comparative to similar services, is very competitive and in my mind worth every cent.Thank you, sincerely, for making this available. I am personally and truly grateful.

Wonderful, helpful experience

My 16 year old son was going through an angsty time, showing some aggression towards other kids, acting out and got in trouble with the police. The first thing I did was call a therapist for help, and stumbled across Teen Counseling. This is going to sound like a paid for add, but it really did seem easy. After you tick off the issues you’re concerned about, and describe your situation, you are matched with a therapist. My son was a bit resistant at first but knew he needed some help so he agreed to do it. His description to his friend of the therapist was something like, “He looks like a teacher, kind of nerdy, but he’s really cool to talk to.”, and followed that up with referring his friend to the same guy! I think that says a lot! So suffice it to say that I’m really pleased with the experience. I can see a difference with my son already and it’s only been a month.

Best decision

I enrolled my daughter for teen counseling to address her anxiety and depression. I’ve reached out to several local therapists but struggled to find a competent therapist I trusted that had experience with teens. I read other reviews and decided to give Teen Counseling through the Better Help app a try and it was the best decision. We were paired with an excellent therapist who has been working with teens for over 20 years. Not only does she provide a safe and open space to talk but is also super solution focused. Her suggestions have proven to be very helpful. She is also available to message in between therapy sessions. As a parent learning about teen depression and anxiety, it’s so valuable and reassuring to be able to message the therapist any time with questions and updates. This is an incredible app and highly recommended!!

Very Helpful!

My 14 year old son has been dealing with tons of anxiety, negative thoughts and low self esteem. After hitting a low point, he agreed to try counseling through this app. He was extremely nervous beforehand, but after our first session, he was very happy! Our counselor was VERY helpful and gave some fantastic advice, and my son is looking forward to the next session already! A side note— I was worried about how a video session would be effective (versus an in person session). It went REALLY well! Our counselor was very personable and made my son feel comfortable. It was actually nice for him to be able to do it from the comfort of his own room. Plus there is the option to email messages in between sessions, which I think my son will actually utilize if needed. I highly recommend this app! VERY impressed!!

Cannot understand the positive reviews *EDIT*

I simply cannot comprehend the positive reviews for this app. I paid $400 every four weeks for more than two months for one single half hour appointment. The counselor was either on vacation, had extremely limited hours or would arbitrarily cancel appointments, which are only a half an hour. I contacted TeenCounseling three times to discuss my frustrations and no one even bothered to respond. I would not have resorted to online therapy if not for the pandemic but this app has guaranteed that I’ll never try it again. Please save your money and find a service that demonstrates care and concern for their clients. What a tremendous waste.* DO NOT be fooled by Teen Counseling’s responses to poor reviews. They will completely ignore any inquiries, pleas or other correspondence. I contacted them four times in two months and never received a single reply. They sure were quick to respond to my negative review though. As if by leaving the same exact email address that I’ve used four times before would Garner any kind of response. I did try again and as you could likely predict they didn’t respond. Again. I had high hopes for this service as my son heads to college across the country but they’re clearly only concerned with your subscription fees - definitely not concerned with your children’s well being.

Not really what it advertises

I thought I’d be able to meet somebody immediately, maybe that was just naive. But anyways it takes about 2 days to be matched with a therapist, which would be okay if I didn’t have to schedule a session a week later. Which means you basically pay 80$ for a week in which you have no communication with your therapist at all. Then i assume the sessions are once a week from there, which makes their “message your therapist any time 24/7” advertising a little misleading. You still get matched with a licensed therapist, though, and honestly 80 dollars a session is still cheaper than most therapists. I’ll write another review after meeting with the therapist but it also says the session lasts 30-45 minutes? So maybe 80 dollars is a little expensive for that much time (most in office therapist sessions are around 150 for an hour), we’ll see how it goes.

It’s horrible

It’s disgusting that apps like this charge teens to receive help, they could easily help teens with their problems and issues but instead these companies don’t. I wish all therapist apps we’re free so that way only the therapists that actually care about helping teens can help them whenever they have the time. It’s crude and rudimentary thinking for these companies to think our problems and issues are irrelevant. And than they use our problems and issues just to make money. I am tired of people saying teens issues are irrelevant, we’re not kids we’re young adults and our problems and issues are just as important as anyone else’s. It’s a shame what our world has come to this, where companies charge teens to receive help. It’s a natural right for everyone to have somebody to talk to and than for someone to help that person, it’s like charging everybody in the world every time they breath. It really is a shame that this is the world we live in.“Be the change you want to see in the world” - Matthew Gutierrez

Great for teens-needs different frequency options

This has worked amazing for our child. The therapist is great to work with and truly cares. App is easy to use and convenient. The only reason for 4 stars is that there is only one frequency and payment option (weekly meets paid in monthly fee). Our mental health should not be a financial worry-but let’s be honest-it does impact it and has to be a consideration for the majority of individuals. There are situations where once a month or twice a month would have a huge impact on a teen’s life and/or may be all that is needed and at a reasonable price it would be more easy for parents to commit to. After the first month my child wanted to do once a month which her therapist agreed to. They do have an option to apply for financial aid-but many parents would assume they would not qualify and it would hinder them for considering that option. Our doctor recommended this platform and I will provide the same feedback. Thank you to the company for making a difference in my child’s life! Please look into making more reasonable frequency and payment plans available to families that don’t try this because of the current plan. I promise you this is a deterrent for some (we consider led not doing) and making this change will help you make a difference for many more teens. Thanks!!
