LITERALLY A MUST HAVE.

Let me just say, this app did not ask for my review. Hahah. After using it for a few days I have come back to leave a review. Whoever worked on the development of this app worked very hard to make this actually the most useful well thought out dictionary you could possibly have. There has not been a second while using this app that I thought to myself, wow I wish this did _____. Itā€™s so thorough, down to the very detail of every word, walks you through kanji strokes, breaks down word meanings, uses example sentences. If youā€™re studying words or verbs you want to remember, you can create folders to save your findings. Itā€™s perfect. Literally life changing. Thank you so much for making this app. I consider it to be one of the best in my phone.

My Number One Favorite Dictionary

This app has plenty of information and is very easy to use. It has the ability to draw both kanji and hiragana in order to search them. There are usually plenty of examples for each word, which can be accessed through the wordā€™s page or by searching within the examples field. Names are also a field that can be searched in for when trying to find out how someoneā€™s name might be pronounced. There are a variety of word lists already provided, organized by JLPT level, subject matter, and part of speech. The app also has the ability to test pre-made flash cards and lists via Spaced Repetition, as well as create your own bookmark lists to test yourself on. This is my favorite dictionary period and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a Japanese to English dictionary!

Must have app if you learning Japanese

I already loved this app and used it daily but with the new update which, lets you search for sample sentences, it now has absolutely everything I asked for. (I like it so much I actually voluntarily came to write this review without it asking me to, like some other apps) All the different categories that everything is split up into makes it really easy to focus on a specific topic. It shows you a variety of words/phrases which can help you express yourself better than if you had stuck with the basics taught in school. One of my favorite parts is that it shows you the context in which they're used, by showing a bunch of sample sentences. A lot of other dictionary apps would just translate a word with little to no additional info which is why Jisho stood out to me so much. I was honestly surprised it was free AND ad free. It's worth at least trying out if your studying Japanese no matter what level your in.

Changed my skill overnight

TL;Dr thereā€™s killer feature of highlighting words appearing with high repetition in your daily life. Iā€™ve been stuck at growing vocab for years, and Shirabe Jisho was like pouring gasoline on a fire. Iā€™ve been binge watching Japanese shows, listening to podcasts and reading voraciously over the last 2 months. Everything I see I drop into Jisho. You know how you come across words youā€™re sure you knew once, but canā€™t quite recall? Shirabe Jisho provides blue highlighting that shows you all uses of the kanji youā€™ve come across and bookmarked, and concentrates your learning on kanji/words with high repetition in your daily life. This alone boosted my retention, filled out On/Kun understandings and helped me see the loose connections between the root kanji and broader uses, even in words I already knew. The input methods for kanji are the cleanest and most forgiving Iā€™ve seen. The bookmark and folder features make it easy to build vocab and make flash cards. The interface lets you click on just about anything (kanji, words, examples). One feature request: either Apple Watch flash card support or export/import compatibility with AnkiApp.

Look no further

Excellent! Itā€™s got everything: you can draw the character, or search by radicals, or just type in the roman characters (for an English and/or Japanese word). They provide all the tenses of a word, as well as commonly used combinations of the word. Even cultural slang, obscure or archaic terms, grade level, stroke counts, etc. are given in such a simple & compact app. Iā€™ve enjoyed Henshallā€™s (now under a different author) ā€œA Guide To Remembering Japanese Charactersā€ for its comprehensive, encyclopedia-like format. It is fun to swim through and explore, to muse on the earlier forms of kanji, and learn about the history of China. Itā€™s a perfect manual for those who study the language and if you are familiar with it then Iā€™d recommend this app as on par with that same quality & thoroughness. I had to pause and give a review because Iā€™ve been using it for a couple years now and have had no glitches nor any disappointments in searching for a word.

Excellent app! Lots of functionality and info.

I donā€™t normally write reviews but Iā€™m very happy to give this app 5 starts. Not only is it a great dictionary, but the options for searching words are great! You can write in romaji, English, kana, or hand write the kanji itself (assuming you know the stroke order) to find words. It mentions which words are common, gives plenty of context and examples for words, and is generally just a great app. Itā€™s organized well, runs very smoothly, saves your previous searches to quickly find that word you looked up yesterday, and is overall just a fantastically designed UI. You also have access to features such as flash cards, notes for yourself, and more really cool features. I have not used many of these resources myself, as I mainly use it as a dictionary supplement to my other Japanese learning material. The Kanji lists in particular are quite neat. Easy recommendation!

best jisho iā€™ve found!!

so, let me start out by saying, i speak japaneseā€¦ but iā€™m basically illiterate in it. i never found the need to know how to read or write it past the basic kana and my given/family name, other than that i simply just speak it. but, as of recently iā€™ve found myself actually needing to know how to read for various reasons, so i had to go looking for a jisho. iā€™d found a couple before but i hated the navigation of it (not to mention they required memberships at ungodly prices). when i stumbled upon this app i thought it was too good to be true. i decided to test my luck and download it. i tested it out on some stuff i already knew the kanji for and figured out it was correct, even with slang and phrases! I rely on this app heavily when reading since iā€™m still not on par with how iā€™m able to speak and iā€™d argue to say i use it almost every day. 10/10 do recommend if youā€™re in the same situation as me or youā€™re simply trying to learn japanese.

Love it, very useful

Youā€™ll never need another Japanese study app (especially one you have to pay for). This one is FREE! You can draw kanji on the app to find out the meaning, and you can also draw a couple at once. This is really great if you donā€™t want to lug around a kanji dictionary and search through pages for one specific kanji. This app makes it incredibly easy to look up kanji. There are example sentences for many words, phrases, and verbs. You can also click on any words to see the meaning in those examples. There are break downs of all words and kanji stroke order. I often use the kanji stroke order tool to improve my handwriting. You can type English words to see translations and it tells you when itā€™s a very commonly used word. This app is really useful for learning kanji/ vocabulary and is a tool I often use when I read books written in Japanese. I donā€™t use it as a translator though. I use a translator app for that. I would very highly recommend this app to anyone who wants to supplement their Japanese learning. I recommend using this app in junction with a textbook.

Useful, but would be even better if there was Apple Watch compatibility

Iā€™ve been using this dictionary for almost as long as Iā€™ve been studying Japanese for, since 2 years ago. Iā€™ve tried out Midori for a while, but didnā€™t want to buy it since it was too expensive, so I went for this app instead. Both apps have the exact same content and example sentences, except that this one is completely free, so naturally, I picked this app over Midori. I like the favourite function and they way I can bookmark words for later revision. If the developers can make this app compatible with the Apple Watch, that can allow my bookmarked words to show up on my Watch so that I can revise from my wrist on the go, Iā€™d be eternally grateful. Of course, itā€™d be even better if I can also search for words from my watch too, using the Scribble function, or through a little Japanese keypad. I had to use Erudite to make it possible to add words to a list that can appear on my watch for revision, but since Iā€™ve bookmarked hundreds of words in the Shirabe Jisho app, itā€™s a real pain to have to boomark all the words again.

Best Dictionary App

Literally the best I have found on Japanese, Iā€™ve never seen so many definitions for a single word I have ever seen. Itā€™s the best app I have installed (apart from my games), it gives you so much more then just a dictionary. Flash cards, Katakana/Hiragana, notes and you can go back to words that you just searched up. Amazing in my opinion, I would think that others 1 star reviews are to be appreciated for their criticisms. Thatā€™s because when the dev sees them, they can fix the app to make it even greater. So Iā€™d like to thank you for testing this out before I could. Even though they are bad reviews, you can fix them. You can change them when you try it again, everything can be changed. Iā€™d like to see more functions but thatā€™s just for my personal use. Much appreciated thank you for making things more easy for us.
