Has potential to be great.

I saw this on the Today page when I was looking for something relevant to drawing. I don’t mean my three-star rating as necessarily being bad, but there are just some features I wish were available. One of the problems with sketching for me is that my hands shake, so it was hard for me to sketch out and follow the lines. If this app had some of the simple features like in Procreate, where I can easily create a straight line, a curved line, a circle, etc. all with ease, one of the other small but slightly frustrating problems was that as I followed the guided lines, it would often skip to the next step before I was even finished. On a positive note, I saw that you could purchase a monthly or yearly plan, which I think is a reasonable price for getting access to thousands of lessons. In conclusion, I think the concept is great and can make for an enjoyable app, but I need a few add-ons/features before I’ll come back.

Perfect for us wannabe artists!

As I hit 50 years old, I have given in the thought that I will never will never be able to be an artist. I can't sketch, draw as and barelyscratch my name in the ground with a stick. Then I came across Shadow Draw. I quitklydonated all of my "how to draw" books and bought a large tablet and apple pen. In the last few months of drawing with Shadow Draw, I can actually sketch a discernable character or random image without the app. The app gave me the fundamentals of drawing by allowing me to pick out easy sketches or difficult sketchs to test my abilities and stretch my skills. It's only taken 50 years to get this far, but it wouldn't be possible without Shadow Draw. Great app, and I am very appreciative of all I have learned!

Game Changer for Learning to Draw

I’ve been using this app with a subscription for a few months now, and I love it. As other reviewers have stated, this has helped my drawing OUTSIDE of the app, as well. I work a full time job, and this lets me get my daily “reps” in. Using my Apple pencil, I treat it like a Fitbit for drawing, and the steady progress feels great. The developers are also pushing updates regularly. I also enjoy the stylistic difference between the contributors. In future versions I would like to see more tips and text instruction along with new drawings to practice, with a focus on fundamentals (such as with figure drawing). A few drawings in the app already do this. I think this will really help those of us who also like to understand the process. Bring even more artists in from different fields, too, as you continue to grow. Keep up the great work!

THE BEST APP TO LEARN HOW TO DRAW PERIOD!!!

Stop looking for other drawing apps because you just found the best drawing app there is PERIOD. This is by FAR the definitive, must have, absolute winner of the drawing apps. Not only is there so, SO much content to learn how to draw, the way in which the tutorials work are intuitive. If I can draw using this app, trust me you can too! Step by step tracing instructions, abilities to alter the canvas and zoom in and out to better see the strokes and the endless amount of subjects to draw! You want to learn how to draw faces better? They got it, Male and female faces. You wanna draw horses better? They got it! You wanna learn how to draw mountains, trees, bushes, landscapes, portraits, THEY GOT IT! If they don’t have it, message their team. I have never had customer support like this. These people actually do care, I know that makes you uncomfortable thinking that they actually do care. But they do so get over it! I love this app. It will never get old. Even when I become a professional artist! I’ll know where to hone my skills. Man I am thirsty. Gotta go! Download this app now! You won’t regret it!

Fabulous!

Coming from someone who started using this app years ago... I just started to use it again and so many things have changed. It is an incredible app you must try if you are learning to draw! The guidelines are slow enough to follow along and be able to loosely recreate what it is showing you to draw as the drawing progresses. I find it much easier to follow and feel it gives me time not only to follow but also understand what is being done and why. The lesson on eyes is amazing and I have tried it several times getting better as I go. I love that there is a reference of how the drawing will look when it is done as it gives me a chance to make the lines more like they should look in the end instead of blindly following along and not knowing if I am connecting correctly, how it will look compared to the finished one, etc. If there are lessons that do not use a reference on the side, I may snap a picture with my phone to use at the same time. So many possibilities! A lot of apps don’t seem they would translate well to doing the same drawing on paper, but with some repetition I have no doubt I could recreate it later. I am so happy I came back and tried it again and I am amazed how wonderful it has become! I plan to make drawings I learn in this app and transfer them to Procreate as I am learning that as well. Try this drawing app and you will love it :). No other drawing app compares to this!

Great app for people with little experience drawing!

I really enjoy using this app. I love how we can follow the lines one by one with the option to see the finished version any time, so I know what the lines are supposed to be. There are a couple of things I would suggest to the dev. One is to make it easy to find all the pieces I purchased so I don’t have to remember which ones are available for me to start drawing. The other one, which is even more important to me, is fixing how the eraser interacts with the coloring tool. The coloring tool allows you to fill in behind the lines you make with color. If you’re like me and erase a ton while sketching, this coloring tool basically doesn’t work properly. It won’t fill color behind the areas that you previously erased. This makes me feel like the eraser tool was implemented as a white marker instead of actually erasing. The app still gets five stars because I love it for learning how to sketch, but please fix the ability to color the areas where I erase.

Has potential

The app is a good start, and can be fun, especially with more artists added. I have two suggestions to make it more useful. First, when starting a new drawing, it is imperative to have a faint outline of the actual finished drawing in the background. I just spent like 10 minutes drawing the squirrel, except for most of it, I was just scribbling circles and lines without knowing how they related to the final product. To learn to sketch, I need to know how to look at an image and break it down into those lines and circles. Just blindly scribbling doesn’t help a lot. Also, with the more complex drawings, at times, the artist’s next line is a dot somewhere on the page of scribbles and I can’t find where to make the next line, so I have to just randomly draw until I find out where the dot was, as the drawing won’t continue until you match the artists lines.

So far so good!

Haven’t completed too many drawings yet but needed to give kudos, I had been looking for an app almost exactly like this! As for the reviewer complaining that this isn’t how you learn to draw, speak for yourself. There are plenty of different ways to learn how to draw, and ultimately muscle-memory is a big factor as well, and I like that they guide you step-by-step how another animator would draw, it’s a perfectly suitable way to learn to draw (and yes, I’ve taken sketch courses before, many many many years ago, hence why I was looking for an app like this). So far can’t really say anything negative, it works perfectly smooth; the user interface could use some livening up but that’s just cosmetic junk, it works and is easy to navigate and use.

Great concept but needs improvements

Great idea, but need some work. The major issue is in the teaching methodology and how to do the underlying sketch- because there is no continuity, you do a part here, add a line there, then the next line is somewhere else, so you don't understand how to bring up the sketch and the proportions. Instead, what would help is how to do the sketch , where to draw lines and circles of the sketch in relation to the final drawing (for example having a light version of the final drawing on top and a GRID with possibility of toggling them on/off). This way you'd know where a line representing a leg goes, how long it has to be and how to connect it to adjacent parts. As it is now you just mindlessly copy the lines and it becomes boring very quickly. Another problem is that in many instances details are added very early which is not a good learning methodology I'll stick with this app and hope to see good improvements, because it has potential and I really want to like it.

Only one major caveat

Pretty good app. Most of the time it works well, but my problem with this app is that sometimes when you are following along the steps of a sketch; it will skip ahead when you haven’t even finished all the lines in a step. Doing small lines or dots is the worst. Sometimes it will show several small dots for you to do, and as soon as you put one down it moves on before letting you do the rest. It will skip to the point of real annoyance and I’ll end up 3 or more steps behind just because it thinks if I touch my pen to the screen it’s enough. I’ve even drawn lines completely away from where the step will show intentionally, and it still moves to the next step! This is really frustrating and I’ve ditched drawings because of it. If this issue was addressed my review would be higher, but this flaw is really detrimental to the app and also is what keeps me from going premium.
