The concept here is pretty good, but the execution is not great right now, particularly if you don’t have a device with the dynamic island. Without the dynamic island, the pets can only live in a widget outside of the app. Since widgets aren’t interactive, and don’t really allow animations, your pet will mostly sit there, unmoving. The experience in the app is extremely limited, at the time of this review. I had a very difficult time figuring out how to interact with the pet at all, and it only lives on the home indicator at the bottom of the screen. You can feed and play with it, but there’s no real interaction after you choose what to feed it, or give it a ball or whatever. I understand this is a port of a feature built for Apollo (the Reddit app), but with the freedom of a dedicated app I expect much more, particularly when a paid subscription is involved. As of this writing, it also doesn’t reliably sync Pixel Pals stats between Apollo and this dedicated app. At least if it could do that I’d be able to enjoy my Pixel Pal in Apollo as well, but since the stats don’t sync, it kinda defeats the point.Overall there’s a ton of potential here, and if you have a device with the Dynamic Island I’m sure the experience is much better, but without it, there’s virtually nothing on offer here. Maybe after a few updates I’ll give this another try, but until then, this was a waste of $10.
