Great for intermediate and pro

This app is seriously amazing for those who are doing serious professional or hobby pixel work. The UI is similar to procreate, minimal clutter, and just overall intuitive for a quick workflow.I’m using an Apple Pencil on iPadmini and I am just busting out artworks faster than I ever have. One feature than I noticed that could use improvement is the animation tools. They aren’t as powerful as aseprite. However, it’s not a huge deal if you’re making static artworks. One other feature that could be added could be the ability to have a windowed, moveable color palette, so I can place it in the same corner as I do when using procreate. I like being able to export my files as .ase so I can do finishing touches on my desktop.Overall, I’m very pleased with Pixaki. I never have to use a bloated free pixel art program again! Thanks

EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED! AMAZING APP

First off I am a game developer and have been looking for an app to knock out a bunch of pixel art sessions with ease. Finally find the perfect app. It can get uncomfortable/ tiring working at a desk and love being to finish art ideas on the go or anywhere. The app is simple but has everything I need. apps like procreate etc were a pain to use for pixel art and even though the price of this app might be “Steep”. It’s really the only app that actually gives you what you need in an easy to use form. 9.5/10 overall If you want to get the best pixel art experience for iPad this is definitely it. Thanks devs 👍🏻

The best IOS pixel art app, but room for improvement

This app is so close to being the ideal tool for pixel art, even over desktop options like Aseprite, but could use a few interface tweaks that really hold it back from perfection. Would love to see:- Better support for reference images - Rather than just treat it like an uneditable layer, the ability to push a reference image to a separate window that stayed on top of the layer stack, similar to procreate, would save an absolute ton of time switching to and from reference layers.- Support for keyboard commands! Let me feel like I’m getting some use out of my fancy magic keyboard!- Improved/personalized dithering tools - the new dithering brushes introduced in 4 are nice, but I personally use them fairly rarely. What I would really love would be 1: A Dithering fill option, and 2: support for personalized dither patterns. I find myself often going back to old works, cutting a dither pattern out, and pasting it into a new ones. It works because Pixaki supports cut/paste between images, which is nice, but it would be way more elegant if we could save a “bank” of dithers or other patterns that would be accessible across the app.

Great potential, but crashes often

I’ve been interested in apps that exclusively handle pixel style art, and while this one seems excellent with its tools the constant crashing is too much. While it does have an auto save feature I still lose about 15 minutes of work which is just too much when it happens so often. It also lacks the palm detection and layer handling that other apps have.Documentation to properly learn the app is also severely lacking, and I’m unable to fully learn the features based on the dev documentation alone. There’s very little resources for Pixaki and while the direction seems good, I’ll likely be adapting procreate into a pixel art workflow and going from there.

Can’t rate highly enough

LOVE this. I’ve been using this daily for almost a year now, and I can say without a doubt that this is the best pixel art app for the iPad. It has a robust slate of features that are surprisingly hard to find in pixel art apps (layers, grouping, layer blending modes, non-contiguous fill, a wonderful color replacing tool, etc), it’s intuitive, it’s updated regularly, and just gets better and better. I’ve been having a blast making sprites for my RPG game. The only thing that doesn’t work for me is the animation feature, and that’s through no fault of the app, it’s me — I work directly on my sprite sheet templates, so the only real way for me to test my animations is by splitting the sheet into individual, stacked frames. I may have to change my workflow. Still, I thrilled with Pixaki and plan to use it for a long long time!

Best Pixel App on the iPad!

Love this thing. It’s intuitive and robust, and it’s constantly improving. The new preview pane is inspired, and I’m thrilled that the dev added blending modes too. The animation system doesn’t work well with my spritesheet based workflow, sadly (I hope that they’ll eventually add an “import spritesheet”/“split spritesheet into frames” option) and I would love to have the ability to add HSL or brightness/contrast adjustment layers — but those are minor quibbles. Even without those features, this pixel art app stands head and shoulders above every other pixel art iPad app I’ve seen— it has a really professional quality about it. I’m excited to see how it continues to develop!

I love this app. I use it every day.

I do not write reviews often. But Pixaki has become an important part of my life. I draw pixel art for a living. And this app has been with me the whole time. It does not crash. I can work in a massive resolution. My files are easy to find and organize. I use an Apple Pencil and the integration is seamless. I learn new ways to interact with the art form because of this app. Animation is easy. The UI is clear. There is nothing I dislike about it. Though - a suggestion - it would be pretty cool if there was a built-in upscaling option to play with.

So much better than Pixaki 3! But some changes aren’t good.

I’m so glad that Pixaki finally has canvas rotation and an actual selection marquee, as well as the ability to rename layers. It’s finally starting to feel like a real tool instead of a bandaid option for pixel artists on the iPad. Pixel perfect line tool! Dither brush! These are awesome additions! But there’s a change I can’t stand, and it’s the new palette. It’s attached to the new gigantic layer panel, and when you put away the layers you also hide the color palette! Together they take up too much of the workspace for those of us working vertically. You can’t separate even them to even return the palette to its original location under the toolbar. Also, when you select a color with the sliders, your art darkens! I know it’s cool UI, but you can’t really choose colors for your art if you can’t see what you’re doing.I love most of the new changes implemented. I’m glad it didn’t cost too much too upgrade, since the original app was fairly pricey. But the interface was one of the best aspects of the previous Pixaki and now that’s been changed for the worse.

Great app

Other iPad apps have clunky interfaces and lack core features, this one however has all the core features to make a good pixel editor, and it’s implemented well for iOS (e.g. touch gestures to quickly undo or redo, clean interfaces). It’s of course not as feature rich as some desktop editors, but nothing essential is messing.Updates are coming at a good pace with new features and bug fixes. I updated my rating from 4 to 5.Please add a gesture or a button to quickly set the zoom to a fixed value (100%, fit to screen...etc) I hate pinching (or scrolling on pc) those predefined zoom shortcuts are faster and more convenient.

Great app! Have some suggestions/requests though

Love this app! Has everything you could need to do pixel art! Would love even more though if in a future update it could be possible to set quick keys/key bindings for when using a keyboard. Would make switching between tools even easier (I copy and paste a lot when working on tiles and the way the selection/move tools work isn't very streamlined IMO ). Thank you so much! Can’t wait to see what new updates bring! :)

Description

Pixaki is the best pixel art app for iPad. It packs a whole load of features into a clean, modern interface, and it works great with Apple Pencil. So now you can make game sprites on the couch, animated backgrounds on your commute, or music videos in the park.

DRAWING • Pixel perfect painting mode automatically removes double pixels when doing line art. • Round, square, and matrix dither brushes. • Line tool, which can be locked to isometric angles. • Rectangle and ellipse tools. LAYERS OF ANIMATION • Layers are shared across the whole project, which means every layer has its own timeline. • Static image layers for background and foreground elements that are the same on every frame. • 18 layer blend modes. • Rename layers. • Reorder layers and frames by using drag and drop. • Scrubbable timeline. • Advanced onion skin options. • Select multiple layers or frames at once to quickly make bulk adjustments. • Use high resolution reference layers to pixel over your sketches and photos. COLOR • Four color selection modes: a square picker with an infinitely scrolling hue slider, sliders for HSB and RGB, hex code input, and the project palette. • Eyedropper to sample any color from the canvas. • Bucket fill, with contiguous or discontiguous options. • Color replace across the whole project. SELECTION • Freehand, rectangular, and color selection. • Use the active selection as a mask. • Cut or copy the selected pixels and paste them to any app that supports pasting images. TRANSFORM • Move without needing to select. Position the image on or off the canvas without clipping. • Scale uniformly up and down, or squash and stretch. • Rotate by any angle. • Flip horizontally and vertically. IMPORT & EXPORT • Import any static image, or a GIF. • Import and export Aseprite documents (requires iPadOS 13 ore newer). • Import and export Photoshop documents (PSDs). • Use magnification when sharing to upscale without the results looking blurry. • Export as a single image or image sequence as PNG, TIFF, or JPEG-2000. • Export animated images as GIF or APNG. • Export QuickTime movies with H264 or HEVC codecs. • Export as a sprite sheet, with configurable columns.
