The RGB sliders and brush size picker are large enough to fine tune size and color, and placed away from the canvas and phone edges so that I’m not accidentally changing the brush size (in Procreate Pocket, this happens all the time!) Not being able to zoom the canvas is surprisingly helpful for me, as I can get lost in details. Using the RGB sliders to pick color becomes more intuitive the more I use the app. Color relationships have recognizable rythyms and patterns. The simplicity of the tools and lack of options helps me to focus more on the process. I had a friend who is an excellent illustrator tell me once that realistic brush textures don’t really matter that much. So using Heavy Paint’s lack of texture effects help me to ignore that aspect of painting and focus on form and color.
I love HEAVYPAINT, I do. I use it for all my digital paintings. I truly learned how to color better using it. But PLEASE can the developer stay consistent with the ui/ux. I’m constantly afraid to update because I know literally everything I just got used to using will be changed again. It’s so not intuitive, and is such a pain to use sometimes when all I want to do it paint. Please just pick something and stick to it oh my god it is such a pain to deal with every time.
I really want to love this tool, but it is frustrating to use. I did a few pieces, and while I was working on one, it just went blank and I couldn’t get it back? Then my other images were gone. ;( With so many apps like Procreate, it is not necessarily a good thing to reinvent the wheel with a Painting UI. Compliment what exists for an easier learning curve. But first, get the app working consistently. This app is so refreshing tho. I do love using it.
I know this app is like really good and artists I admire use it but bro the mobile UI is actually terrible please fix it 😭 you can’t even see the canvas when you have most things activated, just make them smaller please 🙏 Also it’s hard to understand how to save/ export drawings, I assume it’s more comprehensive on tablet so maybe put some more time into the mobile version? It seems like it’s a beta and maybe should be restricted to only tablet. And if there are ways to make the ui smaller (besides removing them, I have looked in the settings.) please make them easier to find. Thank you. 😇
I’ve been enjoying using this app but I made a very meaningful painting today which somehow was not saved in the app. This is really upsetting I did take a picture of the drawing with my cell phone to remember, so at least I have that to remember it by but that should not happen.
First let me start off my saying I have both HeavyPaint and Procreate on both my iPad and iPhone. And hands down whenever I'm out and about and want to do a quick study or drawing I open HeavyPaint.Heavypaints minimalist tools and UI doesn't get in your way and actually trains you to think in terms of light, color and shape.Procreate on the other hand has so many brushes and features that it actually tends to get in my way, I spend more time trying to find the “perfect brush” and not enough time focusing on drawing. That never happens to me with HeavyPaint. 10/10 get heavypaint if you want to become a better artist and have a blast in the process.Note: The app is still fairly new so there are a few bugs, but the developer is extremely active on social and is quick to help you troubleshoot. But with that being said, make sure to screenshot your drawing save often!
I love this program because you cannot paint the same way you do in photoshop. It really pushes you to work in a completely different way and although it’s a heavy learning curve, it’s really beneficial. If you’re looking for a photoshop replacement this isn’t it, but that’s why it’s so great. It’s so fun to go ham with pure shape, especially challenging myself to not use the brush tools and only stick to the rectangle and line tools. It’s just fun!
I like using this app and it’s overall a fun experience especially when doing realism portraits but I’ve run into a bug/problem that is quite annoying. I wanted to try the transform tool for the first time however it bugged out and ended up deleting my painting entirely? So now my painting is lost and I wanted to see if it was a fault in my end on a new sketch but no. The same things happens again and again for some reason.
I’ve been using this app for a long time and I really love it simplicity and restrictions. For a second I thought it was getting a little too cluttered and like the other apps, but the recent updates with hardcore mode and other options solve that problem. I’m really glad this app exists and has continued to exist.

A simple yet secretly powerful painting app! Focus on pure colors and shapes with a streamlined interface. Ideal for plein air painting, color notes, sketches and studies.
