Simple but (therefore) attention-grabbing

4 thumbs UP! (2 from me, 2 from the kid)Our 3.5-year-old will easily sit half an hour playing this game (he would keep going if I'd let him). I like its simplicity without extra fluff. All the setup options are very intuitive and straight forward too. Our son kept picking letters out of order, and it was bugging the OCD in me. So I went to settings, and there it was, the "left to right" option. Tada! We've only played the shapes category so far, but I like the variety that goes beyond the regular, way too common geometric shapes. Having the Japanese option was actually the determining factor for us, and I would think any parents who are raising their children in one of the optional languages would really appreciate the multi-lingual function. We had the free version for a long time but now that our son is really picking up on letters and sounds, we decided to get the full version even though I knew the app was old with no updates of late. But lo and behold, I was pleased to see that it was just updated a month ago! Yay! The animation and the drawings are very basic, which can be improved, I suppose. I do however like the bold (again, simple in a good way) colors.

Approved for KinderTown

First Words: Deluxe brings together 5 sets of thematic words that support your beginning reader to build simple words, sound by sound. For children already blending sounds, First Words becomes an app for practicing spelling. Parents can set up the appropriate environment for their child by adjusting the variety of settings. Familiar, thematic words paired with colorful pictures for young children and options for parent customization is what make this app a success. We recommend this app, and the other learning touch: First Words apps, because they give kids an opportunity to play with building words. We are glad that they do not attempt to teach words with phonics sounds that do not follow the beginning phonics rules. This would be very confusing for young kids. The apps still give kids a chance to learn letter patterns while they are exposed to print in meaningful ways. It would be wonderful to have more word lists available, but for the price there is a lot of good content in this single app.

Love it!

I got this app to help teach my son his lowercase letters (already knew uppercase) in a fun way. I love how customizable the app is! In a short time my son has learned many of these words.

Great First iPad App for Toddlers

My 3yr old son loves this game and it was his first. Having never used the iPad before, you just set it down in front of him and he immediately figured out the dragging action and now he loves to spell words, then say them after the full word is placed. He has learned many, many new words from this app, including all of the shapes. Its a beautiful app with a nice snapping action and sound when you get the correct letter near the correct space. Part matching game (lining up the letters) and part word-teaching game, its great for special needs kids (my guy has autism). Tried the free version and there are maybe 10 words and he loved it so I just went straight to the "Deluxe" version instead of buying all the individual ones. Upon startup, it lets you pick from all the individual categories (vehicles, animals, at home, colors, or shapes) or ALL WORDS. Great deal for all those words! My autistic son will literally play this for 2-3 hours! We of course have to stop him most of the time but for long waits like plane or car rides, its great to have this tool. Only problem is that I can no longer use my iPad for if he sees it, he immediately wants to play! Good problem to have though...

2-year-old can't get enough of this

One of the best apps ever for young children. My daughter started with this when she was around 18 months. She's 24 months now and it's amazing to see how her play has evolved with this app. She used to just tap and push things around. Now she delights when she identifies a word with two of the same letters in it. "This has TWO Os!" She taps the letters and repeats them and completely understands the mechanic of sliding the letters to the bar above. The sound and spinning image is a great quick reward for completing the word (positive reinforcement is so important for young minds.) I love the wide variety of words included in this app too - my daughter loves picking "Shapes" or "animals" or whichever category first. Great work Learning Touch!

Responsive and Fun with lots of Options

Great app with logical parental controls and many options. With or w/o hints, short, long or random length words, force left to right or random. My son has "graduated" through the different options and chooses this app over others. It's easy to understand what to do, good feedback for errors, quick response when touching and dragging the letters. Also offers categories for what words you spell, i.e. home, colors, animals, etc. Or choose all words and get random mix. Nice options to keep the game fresh or growing with the child. It's really worth it to get the Deluxe version. App works the same on iPad and iPhone and my son doesn't care which device he's on as long as he can play. The biggest thing is he is spelling these words outside of the app now and isn't that the point? Win.

Description

* Finalist for the BestAppEver Award: Toddler Apps * The best-selling reading game for kids has gotten even better! We've added more words, more languages, and phonics. First Words Deluxe provides endless fun for the toddlers in your life, all while giving your child a head start on learning their letters and learning to spell words.

Now with Spanish, French, German, Japanese, plus US and UK English. First Words Deluxe is toddler-tested and approved, with a user-interface designed specifically for the littlest of fingers. The game includes over 150 words in five kid-friendly categories: ** Animals ** ** Vehicles ** ** Colors ** ** Shapes ** ** Words from around the house ** (Fewer words are shown when the phonics option is selected, because many English words are not spelled phonetically. A total of 68 phonics words are included.) A wide range of options let you tune the game to match your child's current skills and abilities. If your child is old enough to ask for your phone, they're old enough for First Words Deluxe! Here's what educators and reviewers have said about our First Words apps: “First Words is an app that teaches letters and words in fun and interactive way. Very easy to use these apps will help support your little ones learning with great illustrations and bright colors. Each app supports kids learning and encourages kids to explore and discover by revealing, rewarding and teaching.” -- Fun Educational Apps “Excellent - As a teacher, I love this game! Just what technology was meant to do!” -- iTunes Review “This app has great settings that let you control the level of difficulty for the child – either with lots of hints or almost none at all. The letters slide nicely into each word and when completed the child is rewarded by having the pictured animal enlarge and animate briefly.” --Carisa Kluver at Digital Stortyime “First Words Deluxe is a very straightforward word-building game. Words are either said letter by letter as they are dragged into the appropriate gray boxes or, if chosen in the settings, a smaller set of words can be sounded out with phonics. This makes this game a treat for both pre-readers and early spellers.” --Common Sense Media “Looking to guide your toddler towards recognizing letters and how to spell words up to eight letters long? Then First Words Deluxe might be just what you are looking for. This pre-reader and spelling application encourages vocabulary development in a wide range of categories such as: vehicles, animals, at home, colors, and shapes.” --Andrea Gardner at Applicable2u "First Words is a great app -- as I said at the time, 'Leo loves First Words because it's fun and easy. I love it because he's learning to spell words, and the interface makes that learning error-free.'" ---Shannon Des Roches Rosa at Squidalicious *** We love getting feedback from our users.
