An EXCELLENT PC game that works well enough mobile

I played Wesnoth forever ago on my PC after asking around what a good game for a Fire Emblem lover is. It’s probably half way between Fire Emblem and Advance Wars, though. It’s incredibly tough to beat as a free game. The port to mobile didn’t change the tutorial to include a different control scheme (tells you to right click and such) and the controls don’t work here quite as well as they do on the PC but honestly it’s gonna be tough to find a better F2P game on mobile than this, so long as you enjoy the genre.Easier levels aren’t horribly difficult, one need not be a strategic genius to get through Tale of Two Brothers. And yet some of the higher difficulty levels will absolutely put your skills to the test.

Latest update meets the mark

I am upgrading my rating from 1 to 4 stars. The latest update has solved the game crash and the unresponsive commands. I am able to play Wesnoth again and enjoy it greatly. I have been playing over the last month, often daily, and have only had one crash. Thank you developers. New content will get you 5 stars, just saying.... Overall money well spent.I have been playing this game since the iPod touch version, but the latest updates have caused me nothing but grief. The commands were unresponsive making play very difficult, so I was overjoyed when I saw an update this morning. Now any command I choose for a unit causes the game to crash. I will be taking a time out from playing this game and hope the bugs get worked out. I am using a iPhone 8 with iOS 13.3.1.

New Wesnoth player and now big fan

I had never played Wesnoth before. Like the other reviewer, I’m a big fan of tactical gameplay and grew up with Fire Emblem, FF Tactics, Brigandine Legend of Forsena and the like. Discovered Wesnoth just by searching on the App Store and really enjoy it. The controls can be inconvenient at times on the phone, but I would still give 5 stars for the interesting game play and enjoyable light lore. I enjoy the campaigns. The variation in races, unit types, difficulty levels, and maps make the gameplay very interesting and highly replay-able. Limitless strategies to consider! Only big problem is how spending hours on the game flies by

Imperfect but ultimately great port

Never played this before trying it on ipad. Was very surprised by how well the touch controls are despite the original mouse and keyboard controls. However there is some fiddlyness in some places, like using drag to both pan the camera and issue orders. Misplaced commands are fairly common and requires some practice to avoid. But given the open source nature and how much content comes packed in, these issues are easy to overlook because otherwise this game fulfills everything ive been looking for in a strategy game on tablet. Special thanks to the dev team for all the effort they've put into this!

Great port of a great game

This app is a wonderful port of the computer version of wesnoth that contains many features that most App Store games lack. Features such as mod support and cross platform multiplayer are both rare things to find on current apps. The game plays smoothly and is for the most part stable even when handling mods that are designed with computers in mind. With this in mind the only real issues I find are in the interface. Currently functionality is missing in the multiplayer lobbies that makes it near impossible to use various chat features that PC and Mac users enjoy, this includes the near inability to private message other users and the inaccessibility of the friend system.

Still my all-time favorite game on iPad

I own the non-HD version, the PC version, and this version. Cannot recommend this game enough. Maps look much nicer in HD version, but oh man, character portraits look terrible without proper uprezzing. I wish I was an artist so i could redo the campaign character portraits...For those not already familiar with this game, if you enjoyed Fire Emblem or Civ you need to play this game. A little more ghetto, obviously not polished looking, but gameplay is solid. Like chess, but with units that level up and grow as you play through. Story is actually pretty decent, if generic, dialogue is decent but not great. I would be willing to help do a writing pass on the game text.

Love this game

I absolutely hate pay to play/win apps loaded with in app purchases. It is fantastic to find a game you buy once, and there is a ton of user-generated extra content/scenarios/campaigns for free download. If you like turn-based strategy games like X-Com, but also enjoy a fantasy setting, this game is for you. Thanks to the makers for breaking the mode of greed and not making this just another money-sink, pay-to-play/win game. This of us without countless dollars to waste on in-app purchases love and appreciate you and wish you great success in the future.Let us know about any other buy-once games you put out. I will happily support a company bucking the current greed trend, even if they are games in a genre or type I don’t normally play I would still buy them just to support a company that cares about the players, not just their bottom line!

Painfully addictive

Highly engaging strategy game. Past the initial purchase, NO in-app purchases. Dozens of mainline campaigns and hundreds of user-made campaigns (Legend of the Invincibles is highly recommended) across a wide spectrum of difficulty, with massive variety in scenarios. Bog-standard orcs vs. elves fantasy? Plenty of that. Postapocalyptic desert elves fighting eldritch abominations? Also available! Want to fight the necromancer? Go right ahead. Want to BE the necromancer? Get ready to smash some do-gooders! And in user-made campaigns, you can play as just about anything… including a giant cuttlefish. Try it out, seriously. Just make sure you have some spare time.

Hit percentages ruin the game

This game is great but I agree that the hit chance is so low that it becomes very frustrating. On your turn YOU are supposed to hit the enemy. However what ends up happening often is that your unit swings four times and misses and then the enemy hits back successfully three times in a row. This leads to a weak (or dead) unit at the frontline conveniently at the beginning of the enemies turn. I think the element of chance is a good feature, but the percentages of hit are soooo low that it’s ridiculous. It’s funny when you are surrounding a small creatures with four heavyweight units, swing at it a total of 12 or 16 times and you don’t even hit once. Hit chance is anywhere from 20-50%. It would have been more fun if, at least when you are attacking, the hit rate is about 50-80%, and the chance of retaliation is 20-50%. That would make much more sense.

A Brilliant Game

Battle for Wesnoth is a must-own game. Intuitive controls are combined with a fascinating battle system to create a unique gameplay experience. There are a host of available campaigns and multiplayer maps on the base game itself, with scores more available from the immense add-on repository. You can even create your own campaigns using an easy-to-use map editor and a programming language designed for the game itself (Wesnoth Markup Language, or WML).I’ve played this game since I was in high school, and have downloaded it onto every device I’ve owned. The iPad experience is a far better one than back when I would play this on a first-generation iPod Touch and the hours of playtime generated are well worth any price.
