How do you take your subscription app from an early idea to your first $10K in monthly recurring revenue (MRR)? That leap is one of the hardest for subscription app founders — and it doesn’t happen with random growth hacks or big teams. What you really need is focus, speed, and proven frameworks to scale your app’s revenue. In our latest webinar, Alexander Zimin (Co-Founder of OpenChat) and Nick Laz (Business Development Executive at Qonversion) broke down this journey. Here are their most practical takeaways — straight from the session.
Build a True MVP
MVP means Minimum Viable Product, not Minimum Perfect Product.
Alexander shared how most founders overcomplicate their first launch. Instead of testing the market, they spend months polishing features. His advice:
- Focus on solving one real problem with one core flow
- Ship with a paywall and analytics from Day 1
- Don’t wait for perfect design — just validate demand
He gave an example from OpenChat’s early days: they launched a simple AI chat app without even copy-paste functionality.
“It was raw, but it proved people wanted it.” — Alexander Zimin
Nail the Core Math
Your product doesn’t live in a vacuum. The math decides if you survive.

Don’t wait for years of data. Start forecasting LTV with early cohorts and refine quickly.
Get the First Users In
“You don’t need 1 million downloads. You need your first 1,000 true fans.” — Alexander Zimin
How do you get those first users?
- ASO: Test titles, icons, and screenshots
- Apple Ads: Run keyword tests to find high-intent queries
- Keyword hijacks: Mimic popular apps or hijack trending searches to capture spillover installs fast

- Content & TikTok/Reels: Fast organic reach if you lean into trends
- Micro-influencers: Cheap, authentic, and great for early traction
Onboarding & Paywalls That Don’t Leak Revenue
“70–80% of potential revenue is lost during onboarding and paywall flows. Onboarding should make users feel the app is built for them. The paywall should feel like a natural next step. ” — Nick LazOnboarding – this is the very first impression after install, and it sets the tone for everything.
- Start with personalization. If you know why the user came in, show them that value. For example, a fitness app can ask, “Do you want to lose weight, build muscle, or just stay active?” Then show screens that match their choice.
- Keep it simple. Don’t throw every feature at them — highlight just 2–3 core benefits. Think of it like a movie trailer, not the whole movie.
- Add interactive moments. A short quiz, a quick survey, or a small setup step makes users more engaged and makes the app feel “theirs.”
- Show the paywall early. Ideally during the first session, once the user has seen the core value. Don’t wait 10 days hoping they’ll discover it on their own.
- Experiment with trial length. Some apps work best with a 3-day trial, others with 7 or 14 days. The key is to test.
- Add social proof. Something as simple as “10,000+ users already upgraded” can push people over the edge.
- And keep the design clean. One primary CTA, no clutter, no confusion.
And here’s where smart tools can help. For example, with Qonversion’s No-Code Builder 2.0, you can create and A/B test different onboarding flows and paywalls — no need to wait for your dev team to ship updates.
Metrics That Matter
“Downloads don’t pay the bills. Focus on how many installs turn into retained, paying subscribers.” — Nick Laz
Nick shared the early metrics every app should track:
- Trial start rate: ≥15%
- Trial-to-paid: ≥30–35%
- First renewal: ≥45%
- LTV uplift: +10–30% vs. ad-only users
- CAC payback: ≤30–45 days
So, the rule of thumb is simple: if even one of these lights is red, pause scaling and fix it first. Because scaling a broken funnel only makes the leak bigger.
Wrap-Up
Scaling a subscription app from $0 to your first $10K in monthly recurring revenue (MRR) is about discipline, not luck. Build a lean MVP, understand your unit economics, get your first users, and don’t let onboarding leaks drain your growth. With consistency and the right frameworks, you can set a solid foundation to scale even further. This was the recap of the 1 Step in our webinar series – watch the full recording on-demand. You can also dive into the Step 2 (from $10K to 25K MRR) and Step 3 (from $25K to 100K MRR) to continue this journey.
