Great on paper, poor in practice

I’ve been using Zwift for about 9 months now and was turned onto the app and indoor smart trainer cycling in response to the pandemic. Zwift itself is a really well-thought-out tool for keeping training or general fitness fun, but the apps (both companion and the main app) are plagued by bugginess, unreliability, and total functionality breakdowns pretty much every time they update. I run a Saris smart trainer, Zwift on my iPad Pro, Companion on my iPhone 11 Pro and companion on my Apple Watch series 5 for heart rate monitoring - I think all these things have worked, without issue, one time in nine months. Usually, if the mobile apps are working, the watch won’t connect; if the watch is working, companion on my phone isn’t working. As recently as today, my workout recorded in Health, pushed to Strava, but companion seems to think I did no such workout. As previous reviewers have stated, Zwift refers to their knowledge base and forums where you have to go spelunking for hodgepodge solutions that will break with the next update. I like Zwift, I’d love it if it worked reliably.

Useful but...

The concept of Zwift is powerful in training and staying fit. Would’ve been 5-star but the software itself is less than desirable. Many usability issues. Most of the customization features and historical metrics such as achievements or PR can’t be accessed unless you start a ride. Icons/features are not explained and users are asked to consult old online documentations and 3rd party sites and forums rather than them building them into the UI properly.Stability is also a problem. Both mobile apps have crashing problems and Bluetooth connectivity problems especially in workout mode that add plenty of frustrations to the ride.

Full Access

Users should be able to see their full stats, change profile/avatar/bike, see challenges/medals, etc. without starting a ride (which we then delete in order to start the ride with a fresh clock...). The companion app should have these features. Or at least fix the game to enable access without starting a ride.(If I just don’t know how to do this, please tell me and I’ll edit review to 5 stars.)Ps: please partner with iFit/NordicTrack - would be so fun to run in the Zwift world on our treadmill without a foot pod, automatically control incline, etc.

Zwift is awesome but the companion app is not

Zwift is great but this app needs some improvement. Right off the bat when I am using it on my iPad I notice it is not full screen. Instead it is a phone app that they were too lazy too convert into a native iPad app. Where is the average speed? Hard to believe something so basic is missing. I know Zwift is all about power because speed is affected by your in game bike, but I still want to know. Also the map could be better. While seeing where you are in a particular course is somewhat interesting, I would really like to know the length and elevation of my ride so it would be great if there was a map mode with a ride profile showing upcoming hills, etc.The icons in the ride need labels. I never know what these do so most of them I just don’t use. And the power ups I usually need to press twice otherwise I miss it.

I want to love this App

Seriously...I’ve tried repeatedly to get this app to work either on my laptop or phone. I’ve downloaded the companion, the desktop version and I can never get this to sync properly. Nothing is intuitive about making this run. It reads the Wahoo Cadence and Speed trackers, will even register my RPM, but I’ve only been able to move my avatar once in every attempt. I’m sure it’s just me and my ability but I’m done trying. I would LOVE to be able to engage with this but there are just too many bugs. Too many device connections and not enough explanation. Forget about the Help function...the light is on, but no one is home.

Necessary companion app; works pretty well

This works fine and Zwift users need it. Eg, helpful if you want to chat while riding, seeing a map of current location, etc. One quibble — if the main app is in an event or workout, I can’t use the companion app events tab to see what other events there are in Zwift and switch to one. I have to pretty much completely exit the main Zwift app in order to use the companion app to search events. This could easily be fixed and should be.That issue aside, the app is helpful and stable.

Great app, would love a few minor tweaks

I really love the app and it is a great companion to my Apple TV Zwift app. It’s like having a hi tech remote. I especially like the new workout screen but have a couple of nit picks with it. I have a controllable trainer so I am concentrating more on cadence than power during the workouts. The cadence font is so small and nested right under the power reading that it is hard to read, especially when really working hard. Perhaps moving it to the top left of the power arc and heart rate to the top right would make it all easier to read. There is some open screen real estate In those places, especially if the power arc is just a tad smaller. Additionally, the app is super power hungry. I went from 85% to 20% in 40 minutes. Not sure how to fix this considering everything it is doing, so I now plug my phone in (which requires a wire that I don’t want around my bike!) Lastly, it loses sync about once per workout and I have to close and reopen the app. Again, I consider these minor but if they can be fixed, I would have no problem upping my rating to 5 stars.

Very good even without smart trainer

Wasn’t sure I wanted to invest in a “smart” trainer so I’m using a wahoo speed sensor and a wahoo cadence sensor. Writing this review to say that this works fine and is a good way to get started without spending $600on a smart trainer if you already own a trainer or need to buy a less expensive trainer. I am riding on my trainer a lot more often using this. If you like the software there is no doubt a smart trainer would enhance the experience and which type of smart trainer would depend on your pocketbook and commitment to training. I suspect many people would be happy with this with an inexpensive trainer and an iPad.

Great app idea (when it works)

I love Zwift and love the idea of being to put my phone in the smartphone holder on my bike to have all my stats and be able to interact with other users and make edits to the game screen without getting up to pause on my Mac. However, this app doesn’t work half the time. Sometimes my stats don’t show up at all on the screen. And, I’ve only been able to pair my Apple Watch for heart rate with it once with multiple tries which is disappointing because I have to set up a separate indoor cycling workout to get that data. If those bugs were fixed, I was give this 5 stars for sure.

Really useful app but some glitches.

I have used the app for a week now and I really like it. A lot of times I will use this app to run in place using my Apple Watch. The only problem I have seen is that occasionally the heart rate will not be accurate. I will stop and check my pulse it is fine. Basically what happens is that my heart rate will spike up to twice the actual heart beats. I have tried placing the watch up a little more on my arm when I run and I have also tightened it as much as I can stand and still has the same issue. I’ve heard that sometimes people have issues with the monitor working correctly but I find that the Apple software works better and doesn’t have as many glitches. I really like your app and I use it primarily when the weather is bad outside so it has been very motivational. Thanks!
