Don't get suckered into the "free trial"

I really tried to find value searching for books that might fit my interests but found the library lacking. I attempted to cancel my subscription but due to overseas connection issues, I missed by 5 minutes! Shortform was VERY eager to lock in my annual subscription and further refused to honor any request other than to say, "good luck searching this year of your membership...HA!" My hope is that everyone understand the missing core ethics and their intent is not to serve but rather trap customers with questionable ethics. I take responsibility for missing the deadline by 5 minutes, it's not "days", its a running clock from when you hit "go". In this world of quesionable ethics and moral governance, its sad a company still runs not based on the value delivered/earned every day but rather survives on gimmicks and gotchas. My suggestion is to go with Blinkist or other reputable company. Happy reading.

Worthless Idea and App

This is maybe the most pointless, or most blatantly money-grabbing app I’ve maybe ever seen in this space. They’re just stealing sales from real authors and publishers by offering book reports on their books. How is this even legal? If I were one of the publishers, I would have a real lawsuit claim that these guys are trying to steal my sales. The whole premise of this app is to read their book reports versus buying the book. And the book reports are so dry they’re barely readable. Sorry, but you shouldn’t waste your time with this free app, let alone actually pay money for a subscription. Give your money to the real authors that actually came up with an original idea in the first place.

Highlight the words being read

I love this app and am able to read way more books than I ever could. The audio book function is incredible and sounds like an authentic person. The one thing I would request though is that the words being read by the narrator be automatically highlighted because I lose my place a lot when I’m trying to read it and listen at the same time.

Fantastic content, poorly designed and buggy app

This app needs a major overhaul. It’s hurting their business. It’s buggy, crashes, and features just stop working. Ex: I clicked the “skip ahead” button while listening to audio and the screen turned from light mode to dark mode while the audio was unchanged. Sometimes the audio stops after you lock your screen, sometimes it doesn’t. As far as the design, the default screen has a search box but it only searches content you’ve already put in your library. It should search for new books/articles by default. That’s what people are most likely to look for. The audio playback is a mess. I can’t scrub the timeline. The skip back/ahead buttons don’t tell me by how much or let me adjust the time interval. I can’t view a list of chapters and move between them from the audio controls. I have to back out of them. Clicking the next chapter/previous chapter buttons yield unpredictable results. The app needs a lot of work.

Beware of annual fee date

I, unfortunately, subscribed to this service outside of the Apple Store and was recently charged the annual renewal without any heads up email. Within hours, I requested a refund because I hadn’t been using it and had just had a baby days before so wasn’t paying attention to these things recently and the company refused to give me a refund. They sent condescending screen shots of my original 2022 free trail terms and wouldn’t accommodate a full refund. This is the only company I’ve ever had refuse to refund, especially for a >$100 fee! Buyer beware and set extra calendar alerts!

CAN NOT CANCEL SUBSCRIPTION!!

I’ve cancelled this membership in October and I’ve literally been charged every single month since. This is despite numerous emails to them requesting they stop charging me. They sent me two emails claiming the account is cancelled- December and again in February - but guess what?? I was charged AGAIN in March 9th. Oh and no refund by the way!!! AND there is NO WAY to stop the charge because I can’t access the account! So…I can’t even use the service while they continue charging me for a service that I’ve I’ve had to cancel my card and get another debit card. I’ve reported them, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Clearly there is no tech support or someone to talk to. Don’t bother - use another service that won’t cheat you!!!!!!

I did not want a Year subscription for $200 but also Super GLITCHY

So, I tried a trial and I was going to try it out for a couple of months to see how much I would actually use the app, but instead got a fun surprise that I signed up for a YEAR for $200. Had I been able to pay month to month - I would have quickly realized that the app is poorly designed, extremely glitchy (it crashes all the time) and it never can remember where I was if I click out of the app, so when I return to it, I end up in a different place than where I began. Additionally- I DID reach out to ask them to let me pay month to month and the person who responded to my email apologized and asked if I had any “special requests for specific books”. Honestly- I don’t see this app surviving WITHOUT stealing from people. The book selection is abysmal. I am TRYING to utilize to get my money’s worth, so I can at least learn something and glean some information, but they are making it extremely difficult with the Poor Customer service, terrible glitchy app design and lack of materials. I would not recommend this app to anyone.

Billing is remarkable in how blatantly fraudulent it is

It’s a good service but their desperation for money will be what turns away all customers, eventually. This review is made with the hope that a positive change Occurs. I was billed 3 times for the same service. Twice in one month for monthly subscription and once in that same month for an annual subscription. On complaint, customer service accepted that I had been charged but said the “ Apologies, but our system really won't allow us to cancel payment charges”I hope they respond to this review so I can share receipts publicly.

They stole my money

I started a free trial for a monthly subscription and I was charged for anual subscription. I tried contacting customer support immediately after being charged to see if I they could fix their error and switch me to the monthly subscription. Guess what? They didn’t reply to my four respectful emails… I literally can’t afford this, my mom has cancer, and I am the only family she has, so I been working my booty off at work and doing college at the same time. I have her bills to pay and tuition . I don’t recommend this business to anyone , maybe I will have a better review if they contact me back…

Would give a zero if there’s a choice

Company charged me a yearly subscription when my intention was to only try the app out. Without any email reminders or notification my card was charged the yearly cost of $197 ( the yearly tab was automatically selected ) and when I reached out to them, customer service would not meet me in the middle in anyway. Worst customers service only after their own interests. Now I’m stuck with an app I don’t want nor need, since they don’t even have the books I’m interested in. I should have read other reviews, this is a Money stealing company.
