Best for less $

I purchased both this app and PhotoCalc. They both work well and do a good job calculating the DoF, but you save a dollar using PhotoBuddy. The gray-scale wedge is a great idea for getting the white balance right. I haven't used it yet, but plan to next time I'm out shooting. I won't have to worry about carrying a gray card since I've always got my phone. Well done application. The only problem I've found is with the Sunset time always showing 0:00 (the sunrise works well). Highly recommended.Bill Olsen

GPS has not worked for some time now.

This WAS a great app, but what's the deal with the GPS for sunrise/sunset times no longer working? The option to auto-update is constantly greyed out, but the option to auto-update the date is not. You have to now manually enter longitude and latitude data (and who's going to do that). This feature has been non-functional for some time… way longer than it should have been as it is (and has always been) a primary feature of this app. I hope Ambertation can get this working soon. I don't really understand why it hasn't been addressed yet.

Much good; no GPS; tons of potential

Bought this after seeing it mentioned in a DPR round-up of iPhone photography tools. The DoF calculator alone is worth the price -- works well, and has a nifty and useful dynamic scale. Several of the other sub-apps are also useful, particularly the Exposure page, but lack of working GPS really cripples the Sun & Moon sub-app, which would otherwise be quite useful. The web-site and the User Manual need to be reworked: features no longer included are mentioned, and typos abound.Purchase it for the DoF and the Exposure calculators. The rest needs some overdue work.

DoF Calculator

I mainly use this app for its depth of field calculator. It works great for this purpose!

Works great, has many options & feature

I really like this app, even on my iPad. It does much more than just calculating DoF. It offers the most commonly needed features all in one app. I really like the subject size vs focal length calculator, it gives you a good idea what lens you will need depending on your subject and distance, and then you jump right to the DoF calculation to find the right f-stop.The CC is set by the camera type, but it offers you a realistic use number based on that, which really makes sense. Calculating the DoF only on the camera is technically not correct. This app gives a real life use scenario to find out what the DoF really will be based on that. Great app for a very reasonable price.

PhotoBuddy 1.6

With 45 years experience in photography, I learned in an era before the current digital "smart cameras" could select the "perfect" exposure settings. I have a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and appreciate automation, but sometimes for the optimum images, understanding manual exposure is critical. For depth of field assessment, Photobuddy is absolutely invaluable, dead-on accurate, and saves considerable time over the trial-and-error or "judge-through-a-darkened-stopped-down-lens" approach. It is easily worth the small price paid for the DOF calculations alone. If you spend any time with the sun and moon chart and use the blue arrows and "dropdowns", it works flawlessly, I use this feature for purposes other than photography (hunting) and can input and future date and get instant readouts. I have experienced no "low memory problems on my 3G iPhone. I cannot find the step wedge mentioned by other reviewers (feature removed?), and recommend to the author that the manual be updated (covers version 1.0).

Mavic Pro

Very good app. I was also looking for Mavic Pro on here, to make calculations. Or, can I manually add it?

Best all around, but camera database needs updated

Most useful all around camera tool kit on the store, but it either needs a way to add cameras manually or update the database more often. I know the calculations for most everything are the same for my E-M1 Mark II (not listed) as for the original (listed), but it's still weird seeing the resolution listed wrong when checking things.

Description

PhotoBuddy - your personal assistant in all photographic matters - was in your pocket from the very first iPhone. Get ready to have it on your wrist withe your very first Apple Watch. PhotoBuddy provides convenient ways to help professionals and amateurs calculate some of the most needed camera settings like Depth of Field, Diffraction the Angle of View or simple Exposure Calculations.

With its large Database of different Camera Models and presets for Exposure or Color Temperature, PhotoBuddy is set up in seconds. The new Apple Watch App allows you to calculate Exposure or the Depth of Field on your wrist as a stand alone app or as a second screen that automatically syncs changes between your watch and your phone. PhotoBuddy also learned to control some Sony Camera Models (Cameras that understand the Sony Remote API like the Sony Alpha 6000) sending your DoF, Color Temperature or Exposure Settings directly to the camera. With the built in Remote View you can Touch Focus (if the camera supports it) and trigger your camera wirelessly. REVIEWS "There are a few apps with similar features on the App Store. I’ve tried a couple of them so far and I like PhotoBuddy best." Test the calculation online at http://iphone.ambertation.de/photobuddy/dof - Find the maximal distance a flash can light using a given aperture / iso - Calculate the minimal camera distance to fit objects of a given size on your photo - Set the white balance of your camera by a list of color temperatures for common lighting situations - Supports metric/imperial units - Supports full, half and third stop - Database of digital SLRs for simple setup (if your camera is not listed, you can simply choose the film size) - Database of common motion picture cameras - Custom Camera Settings (Film Size) - PhotoBuddy remembers all your settings.
