The joy of struggling

I “hate” this game almost as much as I love it. Learning it takes a while—figuring out what every weapon does and how they might interact requires many painful deaths. But when it clicks, it’s a beautiful thing. I’ve made elegant moves that get me through a level in 5 or 6 steps. I’ve managed to move the key and myself to the exit at the same time. I’ve had fantastic runs that could land me near the top of the global leaderboard ...... and I’ve watched all of those things fall apart because the key got blown up, or cursed, or I accidentally teleported onto a bomb, or I got stuck and starved to death, or any number of other frustrating finishes. But, almost every time that’s happened, I’ve reacted the same way: by starting another run. And that statement hopefully tells you all you need to know about how great this game really is.

Game of the Year 2020

Maze Machina gets my vote for iOS Game of the Year for 2020. Brilliant game and absolutely recommended just like all their other games. It does get old after a while and unfortunately doesn’t have the progression models that Card Crawl and Card Thief have. The animations and sound design are genius, but the animations are too slow imo which gets annoying quickly. Still, this developer (and team) produce some of the most polished and creative games on the App Store. I’ve bought all but one and this game was priced way too low.

Great release, could be better

I’ve been following this developer for awhile and really like their stuff. This game looks great and is well polished. The base mechanic is great: the breadth of modifiers and randomness make for a constant challenge. But, I have to agree with another reviewer about the cheese mechanic...Because enemies increase per level, and cheese only appears every three levels, what you find is by level 9+ whether or not it is even possible to get the cheese is a crapshoot. You may lose simply by running out of stamina and, due to the impossibility or bad luck of the level, be very frustrated by this. I want to lose because I strategically lost, not because random chance. An easy fix for this would be to have the robots pack the cheese like they do the key, so that I can destroy the cheese carrier and still obtain it. Why does the cheese disappear when a robot gets it anyway? It’s not like they can eat it...

Not replayable

I love this mobile developer and have bought every game that they’ve put out there and loved them all. Maze Machina is actually very fun at first but once you beat it there’s nothing that happens which makes winning feel like a waste of time. I think if this game had some sort of objective or unlockable it would be a much better game. Something like in card crawl where you could unlock different dealers or heroes, or in card thief where different enemies start showing up as you progress. Maze Machina is just repeating the same thing over and over again; get the key, collect the cheese if it’s there, work your way around the 2 enemy types that are basically the same, go to the golden tile, repeat. There’s no variety whatsoever. I wish I could rate this higher but it just feels like it’s missing so much.

The best mobile developer’s worst game

Tiny touch tales is the best mobile game developer, and frankly one of the best game developers out there. So my two stars are possibly more informed by disappointment than the game actually being bad. The core ideas at play are really great but they are executed poorly. In the game all of your weapons are decided by your position on the board. Every tile gives you a weapon. The only thing is, the tiles are entirely random. This causes everything to be confusing (not challenging). There are so many different weapons to learn that it become impossible to properly strategize. Rather than a couple of mechanics that can be combined in many ways, you get hundreds of mechanics that don’t really combine at all. Some of the weapon animations are a little slow for my taste as well.I really like the concept of the game but I just think the core gameplay needs to be tweaked. Maybe make it so that only certain weapons show up on certain levels. Maybe scrap the randomizer and make each stage by hand. The game has great ideas, and I can tell the creator worked hard on this one, but It just needs to be a little more balanced.

Used to love this game, now has major bug

I used to love this game and had almost made it all the way through. Then there was an update which removed all the items I had unlocked. Okay, fine…just gives me a reason to play more. However, with the new items-unlocked-by-collecting-gears, there’s a major problem because you can only collect up to 25 gears and some items cost more than the 25 gear max. Please fix this and I’ll make it 5 stars. Right now, I’m just disappointed

Simple game done right

On its surface, this is a simple game. The basic mechanics are simple to grasp, and while there are a healthy number of unlocks, even in the free version, they do not complicate the mechanics, they just add interesting depth to them. Combine this with the fact that you are not inundated with ADs or have to deal with a variety of mechanics specifically designed to push you to micro transactions, I feel like it would be criminal not to recommend this game.

Stamina Bad

I’m completely down with purchasing the game and giving it 5 stars if you can turn stamina off. It’s a horribly stupid mechanic with the way it was implemented. Even if you always go for the cheese to replenish stamina it only gives you enough for a few more moves. The whole thing feels like a time/pay wall tactic to purchase the game which is fine, ppl need to get paid. If, however, the stamina works the same way after purchase then it’s just a really bad design decision that kills what is otherwise a very special game.

All About the Cheese

Pretty fun game, but the cheese mechanic is way OP. Whatever you do, make sure you get the cheese (which is sometimes impossible to do), or you will not make it far because it doesn’t show up enough.Developer: nerf the cheese mechanic! Put a slice on each level or maybe every other level instead of every 3. It is vital to survival and ruins the strategy of battling the bad guys. Your otherwise solid design becomes a game of Capture the Cheese or Die.Update: Just found Limit Mode which removes the cheese altogether. Better, but I think the cheese is a good mechanic, just overpowered, like I said originally. 1 star added.

Best game in a long time!

This is one of the best designed games I’ve ever played. I liked Threes but got bored with numbers. Imbroglio was confusing and frustrating to me. This game combines the best elements of both. The entire play experience is incredible. And with different modes, it’s accessible for casual players but challenging for experienced ones. Thank you for thinking of different kinds of players! I’m a casual gamer and this is perfect for me!This developer makes great games, and this may be my new favorite of his. And with such a fair premium price and no IAPs, this is a great buy. And he always keeps his games updated so they function well over time. Thank you for a great game, developer! We need more developers like this out there. This is honestly one of my favorite gaming experiences.
