A delight to use even without being feature complete. Well on its way to being the de facto Mastodon app.
As far as I know, I have used all of the Mastodon apps, and I certainly want to support them all. But as my daily go-to app, Mastoot has clearly won me over. Immediately apparent is the very smooth and fluid scrolling. Downloading posts and images while scrolling is awesome. On the Home feed, a small notification will appear to let me know how many unread posts there are left. Notifications are supported within iOS. Terminology is consistent with the Mastodon desktop. Supports search by hashtag. And each week seems to include a new update. There are two times that one seems to leave the app … when I edit my profile (opens a browser window), and when I click on a #hashtag in a person’s profile. (which “should” open the in-app search window but instead goes to the Mastodon web app login). The developer is clearly invested to make this the best app out there, and it shows. Nice work.
I rarely leave App Store reviews with written feedback but this is one of the best Mastodon apps out there. I love the public feedback mechanism for suggestions and pending fixes. Big thanks to Bei Li for this!
There’s no easy way to switch between accounts, and it doesn’t even show pinned toots. That second issue is a dealbreaker for me. Pinning a toot as an introduction is such a common practice on mastodon that not being able to see them makes this client largely unusable. I’ll stick with it for a bit to see if it improves, especially now that Metatext is done. I like the interface of the app generally, and composing toots seems good. It’s not as intuitive to add a image description and you can’t choose how the Image is cropped like on most other mastodon apps.
I've tried the official Mastodon client, Metatext, Tooot, Toot!, and Tootle, and THIS app is the only one that I immediately felt was on the right track for being the best client. The post layout is clean and logical (@names are shown under their display name, improving clarity), the dark mode lets you pick different levels of dark (not just "white on pure black" some others do), you can easily change icon and color schemes, and the profile view is neat and clearly highlights "verified" links. The various sections are arranged well and easy to get too. Some other apps bury sections under pop-up menus or try to cram too many buttons together on the screen. This app is great and I will start recommending it.
If you find the first-party Mastodon app lacking and confusing like I did, Mastoot is the answer. It offers the most Twitter-like repackaging of Mastodon of all the third-party apps I’ve tested, and the performance is buttery smooth and snappy. Great job, Mastoot team!
mastoot is awesome, esp if you’re coming from twitter. it is a much more polished, enjoyable experience.pro tip: if you have an ipad mini, to log in you need to be in portrait view because there is a pop up you won’t see otherwise (the keyboard will hide it). i had trouble and emailed the dev, who was very quick to respond with a video showing me how to get in. also a very friendly guy.i’ve tried several others and this is the inky one i actually like. in fact, i love it! and it’s the cutest icon too. 💕
Having tried a bunch of Mastodon clients, Mastoot is my favorite! It feels 100% at home on iOS, and the UI doesn’t feel cluttered with unnecessary things. So far the only thing I wish it had is a way to see my character count/limit as I compose a post (or some indication that that’s why my post won’t send when I do exceed the limit). But, yeah, other than that I love it!!
… like Home timeline synchronization across devices (iPad & iPhone). This is huge for someone like me who wants to see all toots from folks I follow. The developer responded almost immediately when I reported a crash, and included the fix with another major feature: posted toot editing. And honestly I just really like the design decisions the developer has made. They make the app a pleasure to use.
but It would be better if I can pin my tootsand edit/rewrite on this app.
