User Reviews for Du Chinese – Mandarin Study

Perfect for advancing your skills

I finished HelloChinese, which is an amazing app, but only takes you so far. You end up reviewing the same sentences over and over. They do have a premium version where you learn advanced content, but it’s in podcast form, which is inefficient compared to Du Chinese’s story reading/listening format. And don’t even think about using Duolingo to learn Chinese - it’s even worse. I love how with Du Chinese, not only do you have access to TONS of beginner through advanced vocabulary being used in all kinds of different contexts, and not only does the app give you all individual word translations along with the full sentence translations, it also has a similar vocabulary review feature to HelloChinese (which is one of the best parts of that app). I highly recommend Du Chinese.

One of the best!

I have been using apps to learn Chinese for several years and only just found this one. It is one of the best apps I have used. It pulls together functions from several apps I have been using to learn to read chinese. Written content, spoken content, dictionary, vocabulary list. The interface is clean, intuitive and very well thought out. When looking up a word it even has a button to link to Pleco, if you have it, so you can get even more information on the word. If you are learning to read Chinese this is the best app I have found to date. I immediately subscribed to support the work of this developer. Really well done!Update 22 Nov 2018....after using this app for a few days I am finding the content to be very good. Many cover situations that I encounter in real life and therefore I find useful. Articles use simple enough language that I can understand most of it but there are always a few words that I don’t know, so I learn something new. I am trying to improve my listening comprehension so here is how I use it. I chose an article and I listen to the audio first. I try to understand what is said. Next I read the article and save words that are new. Then I listen to the audio a couple more times. I read two articles every day.

Makes Reading Chinese Addicting

Reading Chinese is probably people’s biggest nightmare when thinking about learning the language, but if you do it right by learning characters effectively and reading level appropriate material it can be a very satisfying, and even a relaxing process. Du Chinese makes that process even easier, to the point where instead of checking social media story when I bored I'll read a story on Du. What's great about it is not only the level system, but the diversity of content and style, where you can get a wide range feel for written Chinese, and even learn Chengyu, colloquialisms, slang, etc. in context. The audio is great, providing male and female voices, which makes it very useful for shadowing. The one thing I would say while the level system is great, yet you need to be realistic that even master is still probably awhile from reading a novel in Chinese. I'm at advanced and still can't really understand newspapers or other native texts.

Intuitive design, could use more high-level content

I’m a heritage speaker who’s been bringing my Chinese literacy up to speaking level using this app in concert with a set of HSK sentence cards in Anki. The app features are well thought out and the content is interesting, though it would be very helpful to be able to segment saved words based on difficulty level and/or frequency. I’m currently comfortable with HSK 4 characters and working through HSK 5, and I anticipate that within a year or so I will be looking for more advanced stories than are currently available. Despite these two wish-list items, a wonderful app overall! It makes it easy and fun to practice when I have a spare moment.

Great reading practice!

I have been reading leveled readers and found it frustrating because they either rely too heavily on pinyin or I have to look up too many words. With this app, I can read easily at my current level, learn new words here and there from higher levels, stretch myself and read just above my current level, save new words for additional study, and turn the pinyin off and on. The stories and dialogues are interesting even at the lower levels. (The million cats story was a little disturbing. LOL). I also like that I can here the story being read. So I can get clarification on any new words as I read. Excellent app! A great addition to my studies and formal learning. My native speaking teacher was impressed and asked about it for her English speaking husband to practice also. Thank you!

Nice combo of simplicity and features plus responsiveness

This app provides the basics in the best way. Many levels from beginner to “master;” choice of simplified or traditional characters; show or hide pinyin and translation at the tap of a button, and you can choose to show neither, either, or both. The recorded speech is natural sounding and you can adjust the speed (my only quibble: I sometime have a little initial trouble setting the desired speed, but maybe that’s because I have only used the app for a week). But what really impressed me and led me to subscribe was that I sent in a question about a translation and got a response within a few hours from the proofreader himself! Now that’s some proactive service. After our exchange he made a helpful tweak to the translation. So I have a lot confidence in both the integrity and responsiveness of this service. I guess I should mention what they don’t offer (as far as I know). I don’t think there is any provision for pronunciation feedback or for learning to write characters. I am considering Hello Chinese for that. But I am highly satisfied with what Du Chinese gives me for the price. Highly recommended.

Favorite Chinese Learning App

I don’t write reviews often, but DuChinese is so good to deserve so praise. I found DuChinese searching on Safari for some easy Chinese readings. I had been studying HSK words and found some of them hard to memorize, and the process was tedious. So I went searching for some readings and DuChinese became my favorite sites to go to. I downloaded the app and created a free account, and to my surprise, many stories are available to read free. Some stories give you two chapters to read free and lock the rest, but to me, that’s not a big problem. The feature I love most is the option to save (an) unknown character(s) during reading. After reading, all the characters you saved will be turned in flash cards immediately with the character, pinyin, sentence example, and more character info. This flashcard feature is great for active recall and great for learning my way up the HSKs! 10/10 recommend! My HSK level is around 2/3 and I read around the intermediate level on this app.

Fun and Effective Chinese learning resource

Upon recommendation of Yoyo Chinese online course I downloaded this app. Having interesting articles at appropriate levels for reading and listening practice brings my Chinese learning to life. The cultural notes incorporated in the articles give my learning depth. Users may display content as written characters only or add pinyin, and may play an audio recording of the article at different speeds. The English translation sometimes feels like more of a paraphrase and so allows for critical thinking. It is great fun to work my way through the various articles at the various levels.Update: after an extended hiatus due to other obligations, I’ve been using Du Chinese with some regularity for about 10 weeks. I’ve already moved up a reading level! The stories also teach me about Chinese culture and history. $90 for a year is a great value, though it’s a large chunk of change for me. I’m looking forward to working it into my budget.

一年后

After a year’s patronage of Du Chinese, I can confidently say this app along with its desktop version, were instrumental in my progress. Seems like all the good things have already been noted by other users, but I do want to emphasize a few things. I am so impressed that the hover-definitions show the exact usage and context of the word within the sentence/story. The UX is beautiful and interface is responsive, ability to change fonts (on app) has helped my character recognition immensely, and even the thumbnail graphics are enticing. Most importantly, the content. Regarding the article lessons, I am very impressed at the range of social, cultural, and even entertainment news, all done in a relatively neutral tone. My favorite are the classic stories. I grew up in the US with the likes of Crime and Punishment and the Magic School Bus as cultural references, so it’s quite enlightening and even exciting to have the ancient Chinese classics available, albeit abridged for the eager learner. I use this material (at the moment, it’s the “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” series) in my live classes, so my native Mandarin-speaking teacher is able to impart even more insight to us that we can relate to as adult readers, whilst we consume comprehensible input at our own graded reader levels. Thank you DC team!!!

Great design and content

After studying Chinese intensely in college, I lost most of it from years of disuse. I started using Duolingo and that helped, but the level was too basic. I heard about this app and tried it out, and I am SO impressed! It works really smoothly and intuitively, and there are a lot great lessons with interesting content helpfully divided into different levels. I like to close my eyes the first time I play through a lesson and see how much I grasp just from the audio, then read through it aloud at my own pace with transliteration turned off. I *love* that you can turn off transliteration but still instantly access info about any word by clicking on it. It's wonderful that the program offers a choice of simplified or traditional characters, though I wish you could see the alternate version of each character when clicking on it. But that is the only tiny quibble I can think of. My favorite language app to date, sets a standard to which others should aspire.

What people are saying about Du Chinese: “Best app if you're wanting to increase your vocab and reading ability via language context... nothing beats learning vocabulary through the context of stories. I've tried over 30 different Chinese learning apps over the 5 years that I've been learning Mandarin. This app is definitely worth the subscription. Try it out” “A great and straightforward app for learning Chinese through stories. I don't really like sifting through grammar and vocabulary books or even flashcards. Instead, stories help you learn through imagination and creativity, you immerse yourself into the story and learn the words because you want to understand the story. Great!” “Great app for developing listening and reading skills. The part that puts it over the top for me is that I can choose traditional characters! It is incredibly hard to find apps, programs, and books that cater to those of us who are studying Mandarin, but are focused on traditional script.” Du Chinese offers premium content for subscribing users.
