The app I’ve dreamed of from Atlas Obscura

I love Atlas Obscura and they’ve needed to move their Atlas to app format for years. This app makes it easier and more fun to explore and add places in your own community that are amazing but relatively unknown!Highly recommend the app because it makes it easier to see what's interesting around you. Very good for travel, but also worth checking out the “ordinary” places you go because I've found some cool things I didn't know existed.

Atlas Obscura is amazing; the app is a little clunky

I would love to give this app 5 stars - I consider Atlas Obscura an essential travel tool through which I’ve found some amazing places. I’m docking a star because the app has a few minor issues with the interface: the pins are hard to accurately tap on the map view(particularly in places with lots of pins close to each other), sometimes there’s a confusing lag when adding a place to your want to go or have been lists, the list view (as opposed to the map view) doesn’t always show consistent results, among others. None of these little issues are make or break items but added together they’re a little annoying.

Excruciating

It is absolutely excruciating to try to figure this app out. First of all it’s a Google wannabe. It’s literally a glorified Google. You can only pin what is already posted. Meaning if you have been in London, you can only pin the map of places that are available from the list. Absolutely ridiculous. If you want to add a place it has to go through a review, whom knows how long that takes. I am not wasting anymore of my time with this app

Needs work

Look I love atlas obscura and I use this app literally all the time. It has serious bugs- when you press the options to note if you’ve been to a place or would like to go to it, the app freezes for a time until it’s ok to use again. Very slow. Also, the loading takes a really long time with the ad at the start, like 1-2 minutes. It crashes often, or forgets my login info and I have to restart the app. In general, it’s not very good. I turn to using just the regular atlas obscura page in my browser often when out and about to compensate, but I want to use this app with amazing potential! It just needs a thorough debugging and someone with good coding skills to go through, put some money on this atlas obscura, it could be so so great. Also there should be a rating system for entries- some things on here aren’t really fit for the “obscura” definition, like boring historians get lost, get cooler, find better spots that fit here not just random history factoids that amuse you but nobody else. It needs a clean up and more curating by users.

I love this app so much

I travel a lot for work and my photography hobby, and I *love* going to the places I see on this app. Doing so helps me learn about the history, architecture, ecosystems, and sometimes reveals photo opportunities I wouldn’t have found on my own. It also keeps growing as people add sites so if I go to the same city multiple times there are sometimes new suggestions to check out. I love it!

Great app when it’s working, but burns through battery like crazy

This app is great if you have a full battery, but something about it absolutely decimates my phone. I’ll go from 50% down to 40% after a few minutes of setting up a list and navigating the map is even worse. I don’t have this issue with any other app so I hope the devs try something to implement a low power mode, which this app definitely needs.

I’ll be honest…

I’ve been pestering AO for years about developing an App, countless emails and DMs, and finally here we are… what a glistening, shimmering, hunk of gold buried in the mud and soil of the last year and a half! Now, here comes the honesty; this review is coming at you live after mere minutes of smashing that blue “get” button, and instantly I knew THIS is the app I’ve been asking for. This steps up AOs game to new levels. This is an instant five star review!

Fantastic Idea, App Needs Work

So basically, this app is a little bit buggy. If you want to make any changes to lists, your profile, settings, etc., you are better off doing it on the website. Once the features on the app are wrinkle-free, I think it’s a great resource to find new and exciting things to do, even in your home town!

Love this app

A great app for traveling to new places. On a work trip and was able to take an afternoon off and visit some really cool places that aren’t just the regular tourist traps. Love the ability to save places, so that when I do go to those locations, I always have places to visit.
