Great way to connect anonymously with others going through the same struggles

I found Alike by accident and am I glad I did! I’ve been able to connect with other people dealing with the same conditions I have as well as review the treatments I’ve tried. I can speak candidly here, as I’m anonymous so no worries about who might read my very honest posts. I’ve been able to gather a community of people like me who really understand what having chronic conditions is like. I highly recommend this app for others who are looking for a tool that will help them feel connected and provide support and advice.

SO much creepy content

I really thought I’d enjoy this app but I just kept seeing posts of people asking creepy things. A lot of asking to hookup, asking invasive s*xual questions, and creepy people. It also seems to be more of a “get things off your chest and leave” type of community than one where you can have conversations and connect. I never was able to successfully have any conversations on the app. The worst part is that it’s really hard to narrow it down by the topics you want to see. It puts ALL of your medical conditions together in the same feed, so if you struggle with something generic like anxiety, the majority of the people you talk to will only share that condition and none of your others. It needs to be smarter about how it pairs people, and they desperately need a content filter and moderators. I really feel creeped out that I ever shared my data with this app. 😭

IT HELPS SO MUCH

I came across this app on Instagram and honestly I was desperate for anything to make me feel better. It’s nice because sometimes just anonymously venting is good in it self but knowing I’m not alone helps a lot and it feels really good to help others with there stuggles, it really feels like we’re recovering together. I haven’t had any negative interactions everyone is so understanding and nice and there really is no judgement at all. I can speak about things I normally wouldn’t and people make me feel much better about it. There’s not a lot of opinions mostly just other people sharing tips and there experiences which I think is SO IMPORTANT!!! It is really inclusive and I 10/10 recommended

Extremely outdated and offensive medical terms

I downloaded this app with the hopes to find more people with the same health issues as me. When I linked my MyChart to have my medical details imported, I was absolutely appalled to see the amount of outdated and downright offensive medical terms that came up in place of my medical conditions. “Systemic Nickel Allergy Syndrome” replaced my “Intrinsic Atopic Dermatitis” diagnosis, which quite literally means eczema from no allergic reaction. Many of my diagnosis were worded wrong, and about half of them were missing. The one that really got me though, was a diagnosis of “Trans-sexualism” that replaced my “Gender Dysphoria in Adult” diagnosis. Transsexual is a slur used to demean transgender people, and is a severely incorrect and offensive term. Not only that, but it’s also medically incorrect. Absolutely disgusted. Deleted the app immediately.

I did love this app

I even wrote a review titled I love this app. Don’t know if this review and make it up on the reviews. There is absolutely no way to respond directly to people. You think you are. The reason why I say this is because I post something and then get notifications that people have replied yet there’s no way to find my original post. This bothers me. What else bothers me is there’s no way to directly reply to somebody on a post. It creates a lot of confusion when you think you’re replying directly to somebody but actually it goes via message to them. I experience this myself and that’s how I know. Because I get direct messages from people and I have no idea what they’re replying to. There’s no way to change my profile name. There’s no way to change my profile color sticker. I have so much hope for this app yet nothing developer wise is making this better. Also there’s no way to let the other person know that you’re Answering them or communicating with them. Meaning, you can’t mention their name, you can’t tag it.. I have no idea if somebody has replied back to me unless I go through all of my history.

Neat!

This app is pretty interesting if you have a chronic illness, especially if you don’t have anyone in your life with similar conditions to you. I like how the app provides privacy, since that was something I was worried about (you don’t share your real name/almost any personal info, and you get full control over which conditions to put on your profile). I would say that this app is actually really similar to a medically oriented (and not geographically restricted) version of Yik Yak. There are a few small flaws to the app, though. Unfortunately there are some medical conditions missing, including two of my main diagnoses, which is a huge bummer (since your only option, then, is to either not list it at all or choose something just vaguely similar to what you actually have). It’s also just very sparse, with extremely low engagement. Most of my conditions have zero posts under them. Finally, I really think this app needs to offer private messaging. Although the Yik Yak style is sometimes entertaining, it also feels a bit really impersonal and uncomfortable, especially given the discussion content. Making everything public also stops anyone from forming friendships or from having actual discussions, which is what most people seemed to have been wanting from the app in the first place. Overall, though, it’s a decent app with a good premise, and I think it has the potential to take off.

LOVE IT

developers, this app is such a great idea - i love being able to connect with people with similar conditions as me and maintain confidentiality and anonymity as well. there’s so many features that are great, from having an optional lock screen, to being able to connect to a provider, get tips for managing your condition, connect w a community of similar people. to me, it’s unique and i don’t know many platforms like this. the ux/ui is really nice too and it’s very aesthetically pleasing to look at.for some feedback of things i’d like to see as a user:would love if there was a section where you could journal down some things - maybe also highlighting in diff colors and thingsi love that when you’re adding your conditions, you can see factual information that comes with it - that said, i would love if there was a search engine for you to find this information again after adding it and also bookmarking them / that information - it’s helpful bc you can learn more things or symptomatology of your condition you may not have known previously ! would love if you could bookmark people’s questions/responses to come back toty!!

Nobel prize worthy

This is brilliant and while currently small it’s rad to be a part of its early days. In a covid world creating this space for the chronically ill should receive the Nobel peace prize and more than an app review. Go join and help build the community necessary to fully benefit from this brilliant design. This Covid long hauler thanks the developers for making me see the helpers in the most unexpected place- the App Store. 13/10.

App Issues

I like the app and the people, the anonymity is very nice, but there is a significant problem I have when typing a comment or post. It affects the functionality of the app and tends to frustrate me when trying to post any form of content. Half the time when I am typing a comment or post, the text will disappear under the screen keyboard and I can’t see a word I’m typing. I like to be able to read over what I’m saying before I post to check for errors, but I can’t do that on this app.

What a hidden gem!

This app is a really good place to find people who are experiencing the same health issues as you. Everyone is so kind and supportive here. It’s also a great place to gain perspective on life and how many people are in the same situation. The Alike Devs team is always trying to come up with better ways to improve the app. They are great at asking Alike users input on ways to improve. I’m an Alike user and as a member of this community we welcome all walks of life. 🫶🏽
