Overview of Apple subscription offer codes on iOS 14

Apple has announced that it will be introducing subscription offer codes as a new way to retain subscribers and improve customer experience. These offers will be in the form of unique alphanumeric codes. App marketers will be able to provide one-time codes either digitally or offline, and customers can redeem offer codes through redemption URL in the App Store or within the app using the presentCodeRedemptionSheet API. The subscription offers will be available on iOS 14.

Subscription offers provide interesting new ways to promote in-app subscriptions to potential customers. You can provide either free or discounted price promo codes for a specific duration. At the end of the specified period, the subscription will auto-renew at the standard price.

We can think of at least several ways of implementing Apple promo codes in your user acquisition process:

  • First, if you are running a blog about your app, it would be an awesome idea to provide the codes to your readers. That’s an easy way to let your readers feel special and try your app for free or at a discounted price.
  • Second, you can provide promo codes to hesitant users who started using your app but have not yet converted to paying subscribers. You can send them a promo code to try your app for free with a push notification or an email.
  • Sometimes you have dissatisfied users that ask for a refund for whatever reason. You could offer a promo code as a way to apologize to such users.

By the way, you can use Qonversion to send push notifications to users who just canceled a trial or in-app subscription. It might be a good idea to send a promo code to those users immediately. Register here and give it a try.
