Nice app

Love the ability to work on the different WH questions at each student's level. Love having the receptive and expressive component!

Great App

My students absolutely love this app. It keeps the activity interesting by providing a game for practice. Keeping data is so easy!

Needs some work

I think this has potential to be a great app, but needs some work. The pirate avatars look too much alike, but that is a minor issue. I wish you had the option to turn off the multiple choice answers. The most important change I would like to see is the ability to mix up the question formats vs. answering one question type before moving on to the next question type.

Good app-one critique

My only critique of the app would be the lack of a more noticeable chime or 'celebration' when the child selects a correct answer during the receptive language tasks. The quiet 'ding' is difficult to differentiate from the sound of an incorrect answer. If something like an X could appear for an incorrect answer and a star for a correct one, I feel like the kids would be able to differentiate the answers better. (Or a voice saying 'try again' or 'great job!'). With this modification, I would certainly recommend this app to other speech therapists.

Great app, needs a few tweaks

My speech/language students in 3rd are really enjoying using this app. The teacher can also adjust whether it is a receptive or expressive activity. There is a record but I can't figure out how to go back later and listen to responses. I would like to see more diversity reflected in the faces of the avatars for kids to choose. The report section tells you which skill the student completed, but doesn't say if it was receptive or expressive. I really, really need this for records. Please make that change.

Versatile

I like that questions are separated as expressive or receptive. My kids/clients ask for "the pirate" often in the sessions.

My favorite wh question app

This is my favorite wh question app yet. My students love being able to play a board game while practicing answering wh questions. I love how it gives you the option to receptively answer from a field of 3.

Very useful

As an elementary school English as a second language teacher, I have frequently used this app with my kindergarten and 1st grade students. They really like this app and call it, "The Pirate Game." Setting up/starting the game is a little tricky and must be done by an adult. Students listen to a question and answer choices accompanied by a colorful photograph. I like how there is usually a plausible but incorrect answer choice that makes the students pay close attention to the structure of the question. There is a feature that allows students to record their voices asking and/or answering the question. I usually have the students record themselves repeating the question because the grammar of asking questions is more challenging for them than giving an answer. Since the recording is not saved by the app, and since I use this with beginning English speakers, doing the recording is done with the teacher monitoring and giving feedback. Recording the students voice is optional for game play . When the student selects the correct answer, they get to tap the spinner and advance on the game board. This keeps the students engaged and excited about practicing grammar and critical thinking.

Description

****The board game is engaging. I also love the real pictures as visual prompts. So many of my students have difficulty with WH questions, so I know I will the use the app a lot.

I can use it to simultaneously target sentence formation, syntax and articulation using the expressive format. (Speech Room News)**** Wh-Questions Island was developed by a certified speech and language pathologist for children to practice auditory comprehension and verbal expression by answering wh-questions. Children will have fun playing the colorful animated board game and earning rewards while practicing wh-questions with real -life photos.
