Great app, daily user

Bought premium not because I like to comment but that the app is so great I felt like not paying was a crime. One feature request - please add a “swipe left to dismiss” when I click on a post. I click on a post and the post comes in from the right - after I am done reading my finger needs to go to the top of the screen to click the back button. I’d like to be able to just swipe LTR to go back to the posts list. Thanks!

Best HN client

Tried all the other HN clients on the App Store I can find and this is the only one that’s been good enough to not go back to bookmarking the website to my home screen. Was even thinking of making my own!Essentially all I want the same behavior / UI / features as Apollo for Reddit. HN is a lot like a subreddit so I prefer not to have rewrite my brain to use it. The tap to collapse comments and true dark mode are the two biggest things thing that were missing on others. Only thing I can think of adding: dark background or more-orange-less-white icon so it looks good in iOS 13 dark mode, and Apollo style swipe to upvote / downvote comments.Worth the $2.99 for sure if the developer can continue to support it. 👍

Very nice HN reader

The progress of features, stability and quality is clearly visible over time. Way above average. Much better than many unprofessional apps by big names. It is now my 2nd favorite HN reader, especially for new posts and paywalled links. Very good readability mode. What to improve: responding to a specific comment is non intuitive.

Great HN viewer with smart UX, missing just a few features

I’ve really enjoyed using this app! The experience of reading through linked pages and comment threads is very smooth. There are some optional quality-of-life features that can be toggled in settings (tab refresh, pure-black UI for OLEDs, quick collapse, etc.); these are nice features that really make interacting with the app feel fluid, and enabling users to enable/disable them according to preference is evidence of very thoughtful design. My only (minor) complaint: the app doesn’t seem to respect certain account settings, specifically regarding whether or not to hide “dead”/downvoted comments. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, but I would appreciate being able to see comments according to my account preferences.Overall, a terrific app - great work!

Almost perfect...

I've really enjoyed my experience with Octal so far and the author has done a great job. Two things would make it much better, though:1. I often send articles (actually, links to HN discussions) to myself via Gmail, but when doing so Octal doesn't populate the email subject with the name of the article. That means I have to manually type in the name of the article each time if I want to easily pull them up later. i’m hoping this will be a simple fix that the author will consider making happen.2. The upper buttons could be a little easier to use. Half the times I end up clicking on the article instead.Otherwise, great work. Keep it up and I appreciate it!

Best HN app plus a suggestion!

This is the best app for HN, and love how the developer is responsive. The only suggestion I have is to somehow distinguish the quoted comment from the reply for better readability. Instead of the > symbol used now to indicate a quoted comment, maybe change the font color to more clearly distinguish. For instance, in Apollo for Reddit, the quoted comment is grey with a margin line to clearly differentiate between the quoted comment and the actual reply.

Broken login and likes on iOS 16.0

On iOS 16.0 I can log in and see my own profile, but if I try to like or favorite anything I get a “Something went wrong please try again later” error. If I close the app and reopen it, I am signed out and have to sign back in.EDIT: Just kidding it’s because I turned on HN’s “noprocrast” setting… that’s what I get for trying to be more productive. 😂

Reall nice app, but writing replies is painful

One of the best iOS HN clients. Gladly paid a few bucks for the premium upgrade. The one issue I have is the interface for writing comments seems a little broken. If the comment I’m trying to reply to is long, that comment will occupy the screen and block/cover up the comment I’m composing (along with the on-screen keyboard). I’d like to see this fixed and then this will likely be my go-to HN app. In the meantime, I’ll probably stick to MiniHack or just the website if I intend to write comments. Either way thanks for all the work that clearly went into this.

Incredible

Without a doubt, this is the best HN client on iOS. It’s sleek, fast, and there are plenty of settings to tweak if you so desire. And no ads!The developer also seems very responsive to feedback - I posted a tiny styling issue to Octal’s github and an update with a fix was pushed to the App Store in less than 72 hours.I’d love to see some custom icons in the Premium version down the line, but that’s about the only nitpick I can find, and I found it to be worth the price already without them!

Fantastic, some rotation issues on iPhone though.

While viewing the comments section of an article on iPhone in portrait, rotating the device to landscape, and then back to portrait kicks me back to the list feed. While viewing the article list, rotating to landscape, and then back to portrait scrolls the article list down and makes me lose my place. It’s very disorienting, and I don’t usually turn my orientation lock on so it always happens by accident. Other than that, fantastic work!
