Didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did

But I’m glad to be surprised! If there's any feedback to be had, it’s that there are a few stretches where the dialogue stretches a little too long and we’re left with scarce choice and lots of exposition. It's possible that this stems from the fact that there are a few too many characters. Throughout the second book, you’re essentially travelling with eight people: Kate, Daren, Flower, Illuna, Arraka, Melindra, Hadrik, and Leila. These relationships can’t be explored to great depth simply because there are so many of them. Maybe you want to consider killing some of them off?Another thing of note: out of the nine people travelling, you have 3 men and 8 women. Throw in Rose and that tips even further. It’d be nice to have a male romantic interest for your female or non-straight readers, or just some diversity in general. Someone else said this, but — let us romance Eiden. It’d provide an interesting alternative to what you probably have in store for the current plot. That all said, this is actually a good game. If you’re reading this, I’m sorry I gave out so many names — and don’t be deterred! I happen to be very particular about what I read and play (and I picked this up after withdrawal from inkle's CYOAs, which are in a league all of their own and have set my expectations abominably high). Go give it your own shot instead.

Absolutely Amazing

Can not wait for the story to be finished. Love the platform and how everything is setup. The save/ load system along with the chapter system makes it easy to retry different choices and revisit branching paths. I’ve played a few text based adventure games in the past and this one differentiates slightly with how it’s skill system is set-up which I really enjoy. Not having your skills develop within the story, but being something you can freely upgrade with the points the story gives out is a great mechanic. Additionally the choices may not seem as diverse or branching as they could be at times, but I guarantee their are unique subtle changes that only happen based on your previous actions that change the course of future events coupled with the stat enhancement mechanic make this a dynamic text based adventure that I can’t praise enough. I really just can’t believe it’s free, there’s the option to pay to remove adds on the newest books (book 3 at this time), but I think adding a donation button, or even an option to pay to name your character would be cool and hopefully give the creator some more support. Thank you again for the experience and if you have read this far definitely try out Magium.

Great Story

I didn’t expect to be sucked into this story as much as I am, I can’t stop reading it. Chapters seem to come out every 4 months roughly. I’m on my 2nd play through to change some choices and using the many available save slots to complete both run throughs with different choices. It’s a great story, but by the time the next update comes out I’ve nearly forgotten what happened in the previous chapters. I’ve thought about waiting a few years it wfor him to finish the books and then trying remember to reinstall the app, but I’m hoping that something will pan out sooner. I completely understand that it’s a single author not only writing the book, but also developing the app on a platform. However, if an in-game option to donate some money were available, I think quite a few people would donate. If its an incentive of hiring a little help to get things moving quicker, I know I would.

Stop reading this and download the game.

Well clearly you’ve gotten to here and ignored my warning so I’ll justify myself. I’ve never written an App Store review, but this game/story is worth it 110%. It’s like a cross between a choose your own adventure game and a D&D-esque game. It’s even got a night mode so you can shamelessly play until 4am.It has a brilliant story that’s captivating from the first page, filled up ups and downs and an even pacing between combat and character development out of combat. It’s intriguing from the first moment I picked it up, and through every choice I made through both books I never once became disinterested.Your name is Barry. Not like the flash, in fact, you have no special powers if not for a small device called a stat booster. This lets you level certain attributes during the game to see if you succeed a certain action or not. 10/10. Would get crushed between rocks, befriend a demon, and get my heart ripped out again and again for another book.

NY Times Bestseller

This game is an amazing choose your own adventure game, with a simple interface and compelling ideas. I often forget that it is an app, and not a book. I will sometime find myself thinking “I want to keep reading the book about Barry and the tournament,” before realizing that it is not, in fact, a book. Some advice to the writer: I, for one, does d not pay to unlock the second book, and I know many others chose to get the achievements as well. This, of corse, dies not produce cash. However, the writing is incredible, in my opinion equal to people such as John Flanagan, Christopher Paolini, and maybe even JK Rowling. You could get a TON of money it you had one specific storyline of this published as a book. I would definitely buy it. It’s an amazing game, and has the potential to be an amazing book as well.

Fantastic! But I would give it a teen rating...

First of all, I just wanted to point out that Magium’s story is spectacular, and interesting even for those who aren’t fans of magic, like me. To complement that fact, the characters in the story are well-developed and relatable, along with being realistic and motivated. This helps the game, since you not only get to battle epic beasts by your choices, but also bond with friends, too. This is the best & only decent CYOA app I could find anywhere, and I absolutely love it! Though I would like to add that it’s 12+ rating isn’t totally accurate for this game. In the beginning the game’s language and mature elements are weak, if existent at all. But as the storyline progresses, there are some mature themes. The language, gets a bit worse, for one. The A word is used quite frequently with its assortment of suffixes. Along with that, you drink Dwarvern Ale in a scene, and get a little drunk. You also have the option to tell a girl that you love her breasts, which is too much for a 12+ game. Now, the gore, also gets heavy. There are several beheadings, murders, bloody scenes, etc, although I would say they are quite mild unless you have a wild imagination. Besides all those facts, this game is perfection! I love the different character personalities and risky decisions. Now that I’ve got it, I can’t put the game down! Great work, developers!

Amazing

I wish I could say that I disliked even a single part of this experience granted to me but I can’t. The well written story, the beautiful dialogue and seamless comedy was enough to make me purchase book 2 after the first two chapters. If this were a movie, I believe I would thoroughly enjoy my experience enough to waste a vast majority of my savings just to watch and rewatch it many time over. No spelling or grammar mistakes that I could find,(yeah I’m that guy), and an overall great plot and setting. Were there an option to create a name or character or something similar I feel it would be a bit more personal, but the app does not suffer at all. I feel personally connected to all characters to the point that my choices make me feel as if I am a part of the story as well, not just as an observer. I hope more content comes out in the future

Amazing game, even MORE amazing story

I love this game for many reasons, but first among them is that the story of the game is worthy of its own novel. Normally text-based adventure games have to sacrifice a complex and compelling story and make it more straightforward and uninteresting so that the gameplay can be better. This game didn’t need to. Cristian built a very exciting and complex world that would grip me even if there weren’t any choices available to me and I were just reading it. The actual gameplay, while very simple, feels extremely rewarding. Gaining an achievement or passing a skill check is an exciting moment, even if all you did was choose a certain path and upgrade a certain stat. Overall, I adore this game and the world it created, and the only negative I can think of is that eventually the story will end. As of now, I can’t wait for more of it.

Engaging, Funny, Next Best Thing To IF

I am a huge “old school” interactive fiction fan (think Zork or any of the Inform stories). One thing I prefer about IF is the ability to enter commands to progress the story. While many chat fiction projects no longer use this (think Yarn projects) to make the game faster, I find it less stimulating. Magium is the first interactive fiction with pre-determined prompts that feels like an old school IF experience even without the ability to enter commands. Writing was funny, suspenseful and engaging, although there were times when the characters’ language changed. It seemed to indicate when the author continued to write a chapter or section after a break, perhaps. I do wish there were no use of God’s name in vain. I recognize the author and some readers may not care, but it was too much and took away from an otherwise fun read. I would consider paying for the second book, but as a Christian I can’t get down with the flippant use of God as a curse word or general explicit remark (even if the characters were not referring to the God)No crashes or technical problems. Ads were not an issue even though I have the free version (I think). None appeared. Four stars for a very engaging experience. It would have been five if the author considered not all readers are agnostic or atheist and do not take God’s name in vain. Yes, God with a capital. John 3:16 Y’all. Happy 2018.

Bad game design

This is a good read with acceptable game mechanics BUT there are 3 BIG issues with this game book. 1. The actual design of the save system. If something goes wrong with your phone/you get a new phone/your game is accidentally delegated you can NOT start from a specific book. You have to play it all over and that is a real chore if you are deep in like book 3. This happened to me. I wrote about it a long time ago and no changes. 2. It is super slooooow to come out with new chapters. So basically it’s on going and unless you read like a snail this book will be finished after you have gotten tired of waiting for it and nearly forget it. Last update was 7 months ago from time of this post. 3. No support on this game. You buy it that’s it. Other choice games you can talk to a service agent and get some help in various ways. Not with this per my experience.

Description

Magium is a text adventure game similar to old Choose your own story books (CYOA), in which you play as an ordinary guy named Barry, who joins a deadly mage tournament against the most powerful mages in the world in the hopes of using the prize to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a mage himself. As in all interactive novels, your choices will affect the story, and making wrong choices can even lead to your death. Besides the traditional choice making of regular Choose your own story games, Magium also has stats that you can upgrade with points that you will receive occasionally, throughout the game.

These stats will be checked by the game from time to time, to see if they are high enough to allow you to perform certain actions. For example, if your ancient languages stat is high enough, you can understand what animals and monsters are saying. The story of Magium starts at the beginning of the tournament, right after you and all the other participants were transported to the continent where the contest was taking place. As the story progresses, you will meet with other participants, you will make friends and enemies, and you will find out more about the continent you are on, and its inhabitants. You will find out that a person called "The Creator" had established several utopias in this place, six hundred years ago, where animals and humans lived in harmony, and food was created through magic. What you will get to see, however, is the downfall of these utopias, some of them being on the brink of destruction. Your choices will influence what happens in these cities, and you can even choose to save them if you so desire. The main story of the game will be divided into five books, each of them consisting of more than a hundred thousand words. The first book is now available in its entirety, and it can be played for free, with ads. It is approximately 178k words long, which translates to about 700 book pages. This number also takes into account the story's branching paths. The length of a playthrough on average should be about 90k words, so about 350 book pages. The second book is now available in its entirety, but the next books have not been written yet, and they will be published chapter by chapter, as I write them. Unlike the first book, the second one will need to be unlocked before it can be played, and it will be the same for the next books as well. In order to unlock the second book, you will either need to complete 25 of the 35 available achievements, or pay to remove the ads for the first book. The second book is 277k words in total, on all paths, which translates to about 1100 book pages. On one path, you should be seeing around half of those words, so roughly 140k, which would translate to 550 book pages or so.
