Really disappointed

I am really bummed out because I was really hoping this would live up to the hype. I’m learning French and have be using Duolingo, which I’ve been pretty happy with, because you can learn a lot for free. But I wanted to try this more immersive approach, studying current news articles and such. I love this idea...and I think it could be massively helpful. But why don’t you guys stop advertising this as a free app with purchases available to improve the experience. I can’t do anything with this app unless I pay for it. I couldn’t even get through a single beginner lesson. I saw another reviewer complain that he was getting spam regarding his progress. Yeah, it’s a notification. But it feels kind of spammy when the notification is reminding you to do something that you can’t do unless you pay to do it. I realize you gotta make money, but this just feels kind of icky of you guys. I have no idea how useful this app is because I’m not going to pay to figure it out. The interface was kind of confusing, too. I’d hit the play button and it wouldn’t match up with the text. It was weird and frustrating. I don’t want to watch a bunch of videos to learn how to use an app. I’ll look up news articles and use a pocket translator to learn my way through it. Seriously bummed out.

A must have for people learning languages

This is my first review I’m writing for an application, I have wanted to write this for a while now as I’ve used LingQ for almost a year, anyway LingQ is the best tool to use for an input based approach on language learning, which is by far the best way to learn a language, using LingQ you read various texts and listen to many different materials, and even within the free version you have access to a multitude of resources for all levels of language learning. The premium version is a must have as it keeps track of the vocabulary you learn, making it extremely easy to keep track of progress and choose material based on your level. The only problem I’ve ran into is with more advanced and upper intermediate level vocabulary, as the translations are entirely user dependent, but still it’s such a minor issue. My other problem lies in how LingQ often has trouble reading Arabic script, it often counts 1 word as two words, or you’ll see the same word as different words. (Still a very minor issue) all in all, if you are looking to brush up on your second language or are an aspiring polyglot, this app is a must.

WAS a Great App

I loved this app when I first got it. Among other things, it gave me easy access to a wide variety of material to help keep language learning fun and easy. A couple of months ago they updated to version 5, and the problems began. I could no longer change word definitions to match the context, I had several problems with the daily LinQs, the trash can button would come up darkened, not letting me remove things, the X button to get out of things would stop working, etc. It just got to the point where I was spending more time fighting with the program and texting customer service than I was studying the context. Unfortunately, the end of my subscription is coming in a few weeks, and I don’t want to spend another year fighting with this app. I have other materials that I use each day as well, so for now I’ll stick with those and I’ll try the free version in another 6 months or so, to see if they’ve got all the bugs out. When everything is working right again I’ll probably resubscribe, but right now it’s just frustrating me, and demotivating my desire to continue in this area of my language studies..

Solid App

I’ve tried a lot of language learning apps and using the mobile LingQ app and/or the website has given me the best language learning results of them all. It does require a paradigm shift because the app will not “teach” you anything but it will give you all the tools to teach yourself. LingQ focuses heavily on reading and listening and you can build a strong linguistic base in your target language. There are only 3 reasons I give this app 4 st at a instead of 5: first) I don’t like think the LingQ staff is very responsive to flaws with the site/app nor are they very open to constructive criticism. They will write back promptly saying, “thank you for your input” but that is it; second, I’ve needed to downgrade from a premium membership multiple times when I wasn’t going to be using the app for multiple months due to military deployments and they make it a nightmare. You have to delete your LingQs or the entire language. Sometimes they renew your membership when you try to unsubscribe. Finally, when I recommend friends to try the app they obviously don’t want to become premium members right away. However, they only get 20 lingqs and the app defaults to auto LingQ creation and the site essentially becomes useless after you have clicked on 20 words. Overall, I still love LingQ and if any of these features have changed since the last time I encountered them I will gladly update my review.

Amazing

This takes language-learning to the next level. I began using it for French, German, and Spanish after having completed their Duolingo courses, and the results are astounding. LingQ give you the extra resources you need to not just become a competent conversationalist, but to reach fluency. It gives you real resources from native speakers, is tailored to the user’s interests, and accelerates your skills faster than I thought possible. I just wish the full version was free … oh well maybe in the future. P.s. Developers, if you’re seeing this, then please make it free! I understand you need a sufficient income for your high quality services, but you can use Duolingo’s technique and use ads instead! It is my sincere hope that your mission is not merely to make an income (although the services you offer are incredible), but rather to give everyone the equal opportunity to immerse themselves and attain fluency in any language. If you would do that, you would revolutionize language learning for millions more around the globe, and would probably receive a much more vast audience. Please, if it is at all possible, I ask you to prudently consider this request. Thank you.

LingQ is a Game Changer!

Forget about memorizing endless stacks of flash cards with vocabulary. I’m not saying it’s worthless to learn vocabulary, but it’s important to learn the new word IN CONTEXT. Just as in English, one word in a foreign language can have lots of different meanings and depending on the language’s grammar, may even change its spelling. The way to really advance to the next level is through reading and listening within context. I’ve personally seen advances in my language level when I read more, but looking up words in the dictionary becomes tiresome. LingQ has access to lots of different reading material that is read out loud for you (and you can upload your own), and once you highlight words it automatically gives you the definition(s). I’m personally learning Polish and as it’s not a popular language here in the Bay Area, it’s hard to find material unless I purchase it from Poland, so I’ve found this really helpful.

It’s a blind faith purchase

I am progressing through Duolingo and would like to have a companion app that I will transfer to solely after I complete my units in Duolingo. I was excited about this app but you truly can’t even get a sense of how it works without paying upfront. The developers write that you can complete all exercises without payment- which I wouldn’t even ask for bc good apps deserve compensation- but I can’t even do the introductory lesson completely because of the pay wall. Ultimately you have to pay upfront or just click a button that says you know all the words in the lesson otherwise it won’t let you even exit out of the introductory lesson. I have to believe there is more to the app than what I saw in the introduction, but the introduction was tedious. Clicking word by word to read each sentence…then learning it will only translate 20 words for you for free and then you are left on your own to guess at the meaning of whats on screen, blindly click the button that says you know everything and finally be permitted to exit. I am very happy to pay for an app, but I wouldn’t have a clue what I’m paying for here.

LingQ: Great Reading Platform, Forums distract

The system, with its highlighted words, is great. 5 stars. The feed needs fixed, it's just a bunch of random articles. I can't find my own uploaded content half the time, even under Imports, without searching specifically by name. 4 stars. The forums are toxic - there's a 85% male ratio on there, I'd estimate. Questioners are a mix of internationals, and "bros" who use their words-learned as a way to measure themselves. I thought the forums had a bit of toxicity to them, then I got straight up attacked by someone I had never talked to. Another time, spam was posted in a forum, and I called the person out on it, and a group swarm came after me. They also accused me of "group think" while they swarmed, without ideas/original thoughts backing up their opinions, just insults. The spam they posted had a gender-dynamic to it; trying to convert men (and men only).I don't know if Steve's looked at the user data, or even cares, but I'd bet he's pushing away women users from his site. I'm someone comfortable swinging it with the guys, and dang, do I not want to be on those forums. Within 7 days of starting my membership, I was being bullied [and by someone who thought I was a man, since he called me a "little boy."] The fact that very few women ever speak on the forums is an extra sign that LingQ has cultivated a bad chat culture that is (likely) driving away female potential users.

Awesome way to practice reading and listening

LingQ is honestly the best resource someone can have learning a language at any level to practice reading from native materials. Where other apps go slow and encourage dominating every aspect of a language before moving on to new content, LingQ pushes you constantly to expand vocabulary and go outside of your comfort zone. To me, this is way more effective. I don’t lose motivation as fast (grinding “el gato” 15 times before being allowed to learn any other words probably robs a lot of other people of their motivation too) and it feels like how I learned my native language. Definitely give it a shot and put it into your rotation of resources (remember, just one app won’t get you fluent). The only reason I gave 4 out of 5 is that as an advanced learner, I’d like the definitions of new words I come across to be in my target language (Spanish), but despite switching dictionaries in-app and even the translation language, I constantly am getting words translated into English. I think it’s because of the “popular definitions” feature, but they’re marked as Spanish when they’re literally just English definitions. It takes me out of the article and thinking in the language. I have to cover up my screen so I don’t see it, and copy and paste a Spanish definition in instead. That’s my only complaint (also a back button within dictionaries would be really helpful but that’s a tiny issue). Overall great experience it’s just that one thing!

Honestly the best language method

Using LingQ has been an eye-opening experience for me and my language learning journey. Like many people, our opinions about language learning were formed by the bad memories of high school formal classes. Now after using LingQ and seeing how much more effective a massive input-based method can be, I feel like I was robbed not only of the time spent with grammar books but also of the attitude related to language learning (it’s a fact that learning a language is actually pretty easy and straightforward if you read almost everyday). As I’ve progressed with language learning I’ve realized that the learner needs lots and lots and lots of input which becomes more enjoyable the more you consume. Time spent talking/listening in your native language to a teacher for more than half of a class is doing nothing but wasting valuable time. I wish I would have known this years ago. LingQ has been an amazing experience for me as a paid user, but unfortunately the free version of LingQ is too restrictive to fully appreciate the power of consistent, massive consumption.
