Ok but the bolded Arabic isn’t correct

I really want to like this app, however the bolded Arabic at the top isn't correct. If you compare it to the smaller underneath the transliteration, it’s missing all of the vowel markings, and there’s no way to zoom in on the smaller version to see the word better.

Easiest way to learn in a couple minutes a day

I have used this program to gain background in a number of languages. It gives you a good introductory vocabulary and a couple example sentences for each word. In addition, it has both Romanized and authentic writing for languages with other writing systems. For example, for Chinese it has the English transcription for pronunciation, along with the simplified and more complex characters. This is a fantastic program, and I recommend it to anyone trying to learn the basics in a new language.

Great presentation &idea! Useful &effective!!

Very very good tool for learning! Really encourages you to check daily cause if you don't, you don't get to keep that days new word in you flashcard stack. Good push to check and keep learning. Also excellent pronunciation+ phonetic English spelling, and translation. Have Farsi and Arabic wordoftheday as well, and though all are GREAT to have (better than nothing FOR SURE), Spanish choice of words has been best so far. I just hate the ads in all :P wish they'd be less intrusive.

Product Review

I am a first time Arabic language learner. This product has complimented my learning in so many ways I had not expected. I get to know new Arabic words almost everyday. It's a great all round product starting with the pronunciation, writing words both in Arabic and in English. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who has a desire to learn Arabic.Kassim KanoUSA

great start

This is a great start, especially at the .99 price, and I might even be willing to buy the full version if I could get a better feel for the additional features. I'm writing this within the first 24 hours of downloading it, so I only have one entry to go by, but it's missing the phonetic spelling (as seen in the screenshot - important), and the recorded audio produces crackling/static.I'm using brand new $90 headphones from the Apple store [there should also be a note in the writeup for any program that involves recording that the *iPod Touch 2G will NOT record unless you buy special headphones with a mic*], and other voice recording software produces good sound, so... I'd like to have the option of starting out with the alphabet, since I'm just starting to learn and the squiggles don't mean much to me yet :).$10 is pricey for an app, so the lite version needs to give a better taste of what people will be paying for if you want them to buy it.

You Should Read Before You Comment

Not all Arabic letters are connected. Some are, some are not--it depends upon the location of the letter within the word and what comes before or after it. This is not designed as a program to teach you how to write in Arabic, but to understand simple words. For what the program is intended for, it is quite good.

poor execution

One: factually incorrect. Today's word was "yatamasha" which it translated as "to go to work" -- there is no such form in arabic. The convention when teaching arabic is to use the third person past tense because the other forms are transformations from it. "yatamasha" is not third person past tenseTwo: it does *not* present the words in arabic. Throwing out arabic letters in independent form is *not* spelling the word. The transliteration uses an s caron fro the "sheen", not a character most Americans will be familiar with. It also put in two s carons, presumably because the "sheen" in "yatamasha" has a "shadda" over it (is doubled) -- but no shadda is presented in the arabic script. I can understand a lack of voweling, but noting shadda and nunation are important. That said the pronunciation of the word itself was clear, the ability to record and playback is useful. Instead of recording some arabic words and slapping a "whatever works" presentation on it this needed to actually take the time to deal properly with arabic.
