Poignant Story Hidden Inside a Cooking Sim

I’ve played a bunch of cooking games where you tap the screen to make food and serve the customer. This game is really a poignant story taking place in Japan some years after World War II. You play the role of an elderly woman who has to take care of the family diner after your husband is no longer able to due to an accident. Don’t let her looks fool you, this lady is feisty, sharp, and doesn’t bite her tongue. What you get is a storyline unfolding through dialogue with your customers and your husband. This is less of a game and more of an interactive story where you have to level up dishes to have the story unfold. The best thing about this game is that it is absolutely free. You don’t have to buy anything nor is it one of those cash grab games where you do have to buy stupid coins or diamonds or whatever to move along at a good pace. Playing this game to the end was highly rewarding and really shows how video games can tell a narrative in ways other media cannot. As a book lover, I appreciate how games can add to storytelling.

The Only Game I’ve Ever Really Loved in My Life Doesn’t Last Forever

I honestly wish all the stories didn’t end so quickly, because I am ultimately married to this wonderful idle app and now I have to divorce it since I FINISHED it. Now, I won’t spoil the ending (ThAt WaS ThE HaRDeSt SLap iN ThE FaCe I’vE EvEr REceIvEd), but it knocked me off my feet and got me sobbing. I love this game so much. I love the food, the characters, the narrative, the food...I JUST WANT TO FORGET EVERYTHING AND DO IT AGAIN! This game is way too underrated! It broke my heart, mended it, SHATTERED IT, and pieced it up. I...I just can’t explain how heartwarming, kind, humorous, and sentimental this game is. Anyone would love it. ANYONE. I promise you, whoever’s reading this, if you don’t get this game I’m going to die. It’s too good of a chance to miss. Too good. I wish this game the best luck. It’ll live in my heart forever. Sending love! To: Grandma, Grandpa, Sakura, Mabo, Scarlett, the Dr., Officer Hiro, the old codger, the monk, and all the other lovable characters. From: a loving fan, Me.

Comfort Food

I started playing this game because I really like food, and I like clicker games, and this felt like something unique I hadn’t encountered for. It absolutely was. It was MUCH shorter than I was expecting, and now I regret rushing through it because I thought there would be more coming. But out of all of the mobile games I’ve played, this has by far had the most emotional story, as well as very compelling twists and character arcs. I did not expect to become as invested in these characters stories as I did, and I started spending real-life days planning on how to get their full story and make them all the food they liked. The last few stories I completely were completely heart wrenching in good ways. I cried like a baby. Also, as someone who is not Japanese and has never lived in Japan, getting a little insight into Showa era cuisine & culture was very enlightening. It was interesting to see the transitioning between “old” and “modern”, and how staying connected to tradition can be a source of healing. I feel like I’m able to appreciate a little bit more of the Japanese identity because of this. Even though I’ve finished the story, I do plan to keep playing the game. Now that the sadness from some of their stories is passing, I know that I will be able to spend some time making virtual food and feeling comforted by the familiarity of it. I want to thank everyone on the development team for making this game.

I CANT STOP PLAYING!!!

Seriously, this is my third time completing the entire game and my only criticism(not really) is that it actually ends. Most cooking games are mindless, repetitive and go on forever. They get tedious because of a lack of story line. This little Japanese themed game has all the best parts of those games, PLUS a storyline that wrecks your heart, and heals you, over and over again. And the ending?! Omg... third play through still had me sobbing even though I knew what was coming. I just can’t stop playing it. I’m too involved in the stories of the characters to abandon them for long. I keep this game installed on my phone and revisit it every few months. I think I’ll know every line of dialogue by heart before the time comes where I ever choose to delete this game. And I might not even delete it then. Many kudos to the devs!! I’ve never played a game that’s actually “got me in the feels”... and I’m so thankful for the little morals in this game. I never thought a phone game could change my life, but sometimes you just need Granny’s sarcasm to get you on the right path. So much love to everyone involved in the design and development of the story/characters. <3

I WAS MOVED TO TEARS!! AMAZING!!

I have always loved these little cooking games but after reading a review for this game I was so intrigued! A story driven cooking game?? My goodness... Where do I even begin?! The story deserves to be animated or made into a manga in my opinion! I was completely in love with many of the characters, and even those I didn’t love had such great backstories that explained why they were the way they were. Each character is pretty fleshes out, has their own favorite foods, hopes, goals, and traumas to overcome. It’s so deceptive in how innocent and lighthearted the art style appears to be... but I’m telling you it deals with pretty real issues like coping with death, abuse, and even miscarriages! I’m so impressed by the love and care that went into this amazing little game!! I looked forward to playing it everyday and Now that I’ve beat the game I’m wiping tears away as I smile... what an ending! What a story! I absolutely loved it and have downloaded another 2 games by the game developers!!

I’M IN LOVE & YOU WILL BE TOO!

There is something warm and heartfelt about this game, that led me to write a review. It’s simplistic, but heavily interactive. I love learning the stories about the lives of each and every character, preparing their favorite foods... it really makes me feel like I know them all. It seems one way or another Grandma becomes family, and the diner becomes home. I’ve learned so much about the characters, Japanese culture, and even the foods made in the game. I recommend this game to all who are looking for something to keep coming back to. I’ve never gone wrong with this companies’ games, I really wish more people knew about them. No, I’m not sponsored lol. The music is relaxing and the game perfectly molds the simple designs with heavy life lessons that are to be learned by everyone. Even the one who plays the game! ( If you like this I highly recommend “Summer of Memories”)

Wonderful storytelling

I played this game for a few weeks, constantly making dishes and upgrading my diner for the customers. Along the way, I grew very fond of the characters who had stories. The lady with the red dress who wished to become a better mother, the gangster dude who left, the schoolgirl who wished to grow up into a nice lady. Viewing all of their tanabata wishes was truly something enjoyable. All the characters were interesting to read. At first, I thought the doctor character was just another person who enjoyed eating, but at the end, I read the reason why and it surprised me a fair amount. Most of all, I enjoyed the storyline between the grandma and her husband. It was like any other elderly couple I’ve seen; always bickering. However, for some reason, seeing that they have always loved and cared for each other made me tear up, actually. The simple art style and gameplay was an easy way to relax. I also enjoyed the music paired with the game, it was calm and relaxing. I’m excited to play the next one!

Beyond Perfection

I hardly write reviews for games but I am all for spending some time reviewing this one. I just finished the game and rushed to the app-store immediately to give this review since it iss such a pity for everyone to skip this game. This one is one of a few games that actually got me emotional.I happened to come across the name on social media and saw a lot of good recommendations regarding to this. You will think the conversations with the customers are merely daily conversations at first, but trust me, the further you get, the more you realize how important the details in previous conversations are. Each of the customers has their own stories and brings about different moral lessons to us. I do wish that the game did not end so fast (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`). I am all for replaying it too~All in all, the content is absolutely wonderful and I did not even mention that the graphic of this game is adorable as well! Truly a must-play game ❤︎

Actually Super Fun! But, Please add more upgrades

This game is so fun! Usually I get bored easily and lose interest but interacting with the customers makes it intriguing. All of the food you cook for your customers is cooked with love and meaning. You’ll learn more about what I mean once you interact with your customers, especially Slick :( and most importantly, the main character: Grandma!!! such a beautiful ending, it rubs my heart strings just thinking about it. The concept of this game is so simple, yet I’ve never seen a game like this before. Other games, if there is dialogue, feels so forced. This game honestly just feels so real and many of the customers are relatable. I finished the game within 5 hours, in terms of the storyline, so I wish the game would be updated with new upgrades (such as more counter top space) or have more customers added. It’s pretty easy to finish, but even if there isn’t any added, I’ll still play because this game is so cute and I haven’t unlocked all of the menu items yet.

Absolutely phenomenal!

I should start by saying I have never finished a clicker game in its entirety before, and that I’ve never once felt the need to leave a review for an app. This game’s wonderful art, easy gameplay, and witty food descriptions drew me in, but the story kept me completely hooked. As peaceful and cute as this game is, it’s wonderfully emotional and full of characters I couldn’t help but love. Even customers I initially thought were rude or troublesome became sympathetic. I laughed at their jokes and came close to tears a few times when listening to their struggles. This game has some of the loveliest, most deeply human character writing I have ever seen, and it packages it into perfectly sized portions. Granny’s stubborn refusal to let her customers sink into their own problems unassisted, and the ways those problems intersected with one another, never failed to surprise and move me. This is the kind of story that I know I will think a lot about. I’ve unlocked everything, but I plan on keeping the app on my phone for at least a little while longer. It’s nice to open it up every once in a while and see how the diner is doing. Thank you to the developers for all the love that went into this story!

Description

Hungry Hearts Diner is a game about a small shop at the edge of a big city. Take on the role of the hard-working old lady struggling to manage her family's little restaurant—and all by her lonesome, too! Cook tasty meals for a variety of colorful characters, and learn more about their triumphs and struggles as they chow down on your tasty, home-cooked food.

Rice balls, dumplings, tempura...you can make it all! In fact, the more you cook, the more dishes you'll unlock. And hey, you'll even get a chance to learn about good ol' fashioned Japanese cuisine while you're at it! Did you know you can make jelly out of seaweed? Because I didn't! Of course, the people who visit your diner all have a story to tell. And what makes people more talkative than a full belly? Feed your customers until they feel like sitting back and spinning you a yarn or two! But not every story is a happy one, and not every ending joyous. Stay tuned for some twists and turns! Story ------------------------------------------ On a tiny side street in a nameless little neighborhood sits an old Japanese diner. Things are quiet here; old-fashioned you might say. But of course they are. It's Showa era Japan, and the television is just starting to come into vogue. Slide open the screen door and you'll see a kindly old lady hard at work behind the counter. Her husband's been sick for a while, and she's had to run the place on her own. It's hard work, but she's a tough one, and she gets by. Sit down at one of the worn wooden tables, and close your eyes. Thunk thunk goes the steady beat of a knife chopping veggies. Hisss; the sound of meat sizzling in a pan. Swish swish; a whisk beating eggs. The soothing sounds of a simple kitchen. Sit here long enough, and all that tension will just flow right out of you. So come on in, order a hot meal, and take a load off. The peace'll do you good. So, let me guess. The question you're asking yourself right now is "is this game for me"? Well, maybe it is. -Do you like casual/idle games? -Do you like games where you run a shop? -Are you looking for a nice, relaxing story? -Ever played any of our other games, like Oden Cart or Showa Candy Shop? (If so, thanks a bunch!) -Are you hungry?* *Warning: This game is not edible. Please don't try to eat your phone. If you answered "Yes!!!!" to any of the above, well, maybe this game's for you. Give it a download and a shot. It's free, so it won't cost you a dime! We very much hope it brings you a smile! Or perhaps even some tears?
