Final Decesion

Help me make the final decision on when to retire from federal service. Unlike other retirement planning apps and websites, this app was made for the federal worker. Simplified and combined all the different options a federal employee needs to know and is customizable to add in other financial information not a part of the federal system. Gave me the information in words and a slick display i used to make adjustments on how to use my nest egg to make it last.

A Time saver and Lifesaver

This has saved me from a very bad decision. I wanted to retire as soon as I was eligible. With this app, the graph showed me the highest potential earnings if I stayed a little longer. Along with maxing out to your specification, social security. There’s even one to include your spouse’s social security earnings if you want to include in the total retirement pay, along with other annuities such as rental or stocks. The app shows the annuity you’ll receive, but it doesn’t account for life insurance or health care insurance to get a better picture. You may have to adjust your high 3 to compensate the discrepancy. Otherwise, this is one useful tool to decide when to retire and how to adjust your contributions to TSP, which should be the max with catch-up contributions.

Paid version is really affordable and nice

Very well designed. Easy to use. Very well thought out. Seems to be accurate when compared with other calculators. Nice to have all in one place. Might be better if outside investments could be entered. TSP is not very good savings place. Have been taking distributions since 59 1/2 and getting much better returns! I just put those numbers in TSP area and it works out. Highly recommended.

Spot on!

I downloaded and started using this last year, but wasn’t sure how accurate it’s numbers were until I got my HR’s official estimates a few weeks ago - FERS annuity and Supplement came to within $20/mont of what HR provided. I love the ability to tweak the various elements (esp TSP %) to test various options. One improvement would be to automatically adjust the FRES supplement downward if a post-retirement secondary job income exceeds the SS limit (currently around $18K)

Useful Tool, but Could Do More

This is a helpful tool that provides a simplistic means of aggregating all your Govt retirement income streams to give you an estimate of what you can expect to make when you retire. A few suggestions to make it better:- For a paid app, it would be nice if the developers updated this app on a more regular basis. The app lacks some polish. Maybe you could add a feature to save certain retirement simulations for future comparison and review, so you don’t have to keep punching in the same numbers repeatedly.- Needs more customization options to account for different retirement circumstances, such as overseas service, which counts as 1.7 years for every 1 year. There are probably a host of several other unique situations. Including them only makes this app more accurate.

Great for projecting retirement but could use update

App is user friendly and simple and gives accurate representation of all facets to consider for retirement as federal employee. Only downside is you cannot scroll to the right to see more years. I am 28 years old and it only lets me see 50 years to 78. I plan to live past 78 so it would be nice if I could see to 95. This would allow me to see if the rate at which I say I will remove my 401k is good. The 401k feature could also be updated to account for pre retirement interest rate and post retirement interest rate as these will be different and then if it just let you chose an age when you would want the account to be gone. Then is could calculate how much per a year you should take out and make it easier.

Very good substitute to spending hours making your own spreadsheet

The only downside I’ve seen since so far is that you can only make one scenario. You can’t see what happens when you retire at 60, 62, 65, etc., and save each separately. You can only keep changing things and see what happens. Overall, it’s worth it. Especially if you’ve already done your own estimates on Excel. This lets you know you were pretty close, or not.

Nice but would like some added features

Just downloaded it yesterday and so far I like it overall. The ability to add in additional income sources is nice allowing the addition of military and other pensions. I would like to see the app modified to work in landscape mode to work with iPad when in magic keyboard. Note that if you are FERS and bought back military time, your FERS Supplement will not be accurate because the app does not account for the military time separately.

Does Not Calculate Properly for All FERS Situations

I tried this app, but I found it to contain significant flaws in doing calculations for FERS retirees who separated from Federal Service before reaching the age of 62, with less than 30 years of service. There is no FERS supplement if you retire or separate early. Also, if you have TSP, you know that 20% is a minimum Federal tax amount that is taken from each withdrawal, thus your “income” is not going to be the amount that you ask to withdraw - it will be 80% of what you withdraw. The calculations are misleading. Also, if you buy the app on iPhone, the app on the iPad does not acknowledge that you have the paid version.

Recommendation to Developer

The application works flawless and it is a great tool for planning your retirement as a federal employee. I would like to recommend one change however. I think you should modify the TSP calculation to allow a rate of return that can be modified during retirement. So, have one rate of return during employment and then a second option to adjust it during retirement. Many employees tend to invest more aggressively while employed and then may make more conservative moves in their tsp during retirement. For instance, it would be nice to forecast a 8% return while employed and then a hypothetical 3% during retirement years. It would provide a more accurate prediction at withdrawing from the TSP during retirement.
