It’s all better now!
Three years ago I gave this app only three stars because some of the book material was not included, and there was no index. Now the updated version has powerful search features that are better than an index, and it includes all of the book material. It’s a much more useful app now. Chinese herbal medicine is a lifelong study, and I love being able to go deeper anytime I want. Never miss an opportunity to learn because you don’t have 20 pounds of books in your pocket. Here they are, right in your phone or tablet. Thanks, Eastland Press!
Worth every penny
Even if you have the actual books, this app is such an invaluable tool to have. I use it daily. So much faster at looking things up quickly and efficiently for fast reference, but I do love highlighting in my paper books as well. I highly recommended this app to ALL herbal medicine students and practitioners alike. I was hesitant to spend the money at first since I do have the book, but I now have zero regrets. It is a much have for sure!
Herbal medicine reference book
One of the most complete reference and study guides on the market for Chinese/Holistic Herbal Medicine!Explanations and commentaries are well written and easy to comprehend by students and practitioners alike. Correlation between classical and modern interpretations are also well thought through.Job well done!
Missing bookmarks, highlighting, etc tools
The app content is great. For the price paid it would be very helpful if the developer would add some tools to save favorites herbs, formula, options to write note and comments, highlight or look up the definition. This will make it very helpful.
Amazing, essential
Update: The latest iPad app redesign is not as good as the original. I want to be able to read a full screen again. It is unfortunate and frustrating, as the original design was excellent. Please revive full screen text. ———This app will not only reduce the strain on your arms and shoulders, as it compiles two massive tomes of herbal knowledge, but it will improve your practice of herbal medicine by affording the reader seamless connections through hyperlinked formulae and singles. The text itself is immaculate, organized wonderfully and presented with beautiful minimalism. The prose and historical research is rich and inspiring. I believe for an acupuncturist, this is an essential app to own. I am so happy it exists!
Great Resource!
I love this app and use it on a regular basis in my TCM studies. All aspects of this app are great, but if I had to nitpick: I wish I could see the category/subcategory of single herbs on their page. the only way I can see them, is in the TOC, or if I search the herb specifically. I'm currently in formulas I and when researching the ingredients, it would be helpful to click the hyperlink on the formula page and see the herbal category the single herb belongs to.
My eyes are kinda old
I love that I can get all of the content of the Material Medica and Formulas and Strategies for about a third the cost of buying both while only weighing as much as my iPad. Search ability and links to herbs and formulas from the text are wonderful tools. The only reason I haven’t given five stars is that not all of the links work, and for the life of me, I can’t find a way to change the size of the type. I would love to be able to enlarge the type within the app to make it easier for me to read.
Just Love this app! Except...
There are many things I just love about this app. I love how easy it is to use. I love that I can have both my herbal and formula book right there at my fingertips at all times while I’m in the clinic and that it integrates both books so that I can quickly look up each herb in a formula if needed when customizing a formula. The thing that bothers me the most is the inability to highlight, underline or make notes. If this were a feature it would help greatly as there are times when I find interesting tidbits in the commentary but have to read the entire thing again to find out where it is.
amazing app!
2 years ago I rated a 1 star since, despite contacting the developer, I was unable to access the app when I switch phones. Now they have fixed the issue (took them 1.5 years) but it is well worth it. 2 full books for less than the price of 1, No toting around heavy books. Instant info at your finger tips. The way it should be in a digital age. Thanks for (finally) getting it together, it was worth the wait.

When I first bought the app I was pretty dissatisfied, however after a few recent updates this is a MUST HAVE for any practitioner or student of Chinese Herbal Medicine. Imminently searchable and easy to use. No excuse not to know your stuff when you can carry the entire Materia Medica and Formulas and Strategies in your pocket!
