Best offline etymology dictionary

This app provides an offline version of Etymonline the online etymology dictionary

Very useful but audio has issues

It is useful but the database is limited compared to full dictionary apps. Sometimes the audio don’t work after IOS upgrade - the developer doesn’t update regularly which is big letdown

wonderful. splendid. exquisite.

most definately better than any other dictionary/ thesaurus app. the best features about it is the grammar aide, the large variety of synonyms/ antonyms/ adjectives, and the options of changing the font; size etc., and using the Internet. well done. I haven't checked, but I hope it's an offline app. since there isn't wifi everywhere. surely it could use longer definitions... needs to be more in-depth. :] Thanks.

Fantastic!!

I liked this app before the new features, but now I REALLY like it. In addition to my own love of words, I tutor middle school kids who love to use this app to look up definitions. That always leads to further discussion on nuances of a word, proper pronounciations (which we can now hear), etc. The easy links to synonyms, etc. gives me even greater opportunities to help expand their vocabulary. The price is right at double the cost!!

sound files problem. good dictionary otherwise

I would give it and change it to 5 stars if following gets fixed:1) sound ONLY when u wear headphones.. lot of times, i dont have headphones handy2) LOT of sound files are computer generated. 3) not many actual examples how to use work. Okay def, but usage in sentence helps me a lot and its laking that. I mean it has lot but not as much usage in sentence as i would like.VERY good dictionary tho.. those 3 things would def earn this dictionary 5 stars.

Poor in every respect

This dictionary is simply not up to par in any way. The worst feature is the audio pronunciation, annoying at best and toally wrong much of the time. Why implement a feature that misguides users? Obviously a user is not sure how to pronounce a word or he wouldn't be pressing the button for the feature. Threre are many examples; I'll mention just one. I looked up the word "faux pas". I know how to pronounce it but I thought I'd see what Lexisgoo had to say. I wish I hadn't. It pronounced it like it's written ... not like it should be spoken. The actual definitions and usage examples are too short and/or not very helpful. The Utralingua & small American Heritage dictionaries are great for the iPhone. (I hope the larger American Heritage becomes more usable either with later updates or iPhone software updates.) For now, the Ultralingua is the best and most complete available in English.

Save your money! Wait for a better dictionary

I was looking for a dictionary app and I thought Lexisgoo might be the right dictionary for me. I was so wrong! Lexisgoo is a port from Pocket PC. The user interface clearly reflect that. The programmer just ported the dictionary over directly from Pocket PC and never bothered to enhanced it for the iPhone. The program uses WordNet 2.1, a public domain database from Princeton University for definitions. It gives basic definitions and that's about it. The pronunciation of words is not natural. It is synthesized. Many of the pronunciation are just way off. My advice is: save your money and wait for a better dictionary. Pros: - Provide basic definition of words.- Simple grammar guide included.Cons:- Slow and buggy, the screen freezes constantly.- When you tap on the "Help" manual, the user guide still says: "Lexisgoo is a comprehensive dictionary" for the Pocket PC."- They never even bothered to update the instruction!- The pronunciation of some of the words are way off. (They might as well just get rid of the feature.)- No horizontal display.I hope Merriam Webster will bring their talking dictionary to the iPhone.

Gets less useful with every upgrade.

Now - NO pronunciation. The button is there but audio is random and sooo infrequent.
