User Reviews for Colossus Piano

Great concept, great sound, UI needs a little work in AUV3

Ok, so, first and foremost the acoustic pianos are really some of the best on iOS. If you’re looking for a useable upright in particular, this is the place to get it. There are not really deep uprights on IOS. The stand-alone app is great, though minimalistic. The focus is definitely on the samples. What will get me to 5 stars? The AU is … well it’s glitchy. I have issues occasionally with it not loading properly in my hosts (KeyStage and AUM). Once the AU glitches out, you have to close the whole host program and reload it all again, not just reload Colossus. Has to be something with the stream from disk if I’m to take a guess. Also, the AUv3 interface is WAY scaled back from the standalone. That’s a huge miss for using it. There aren’t a lot of options to begin with, but some of the more interesting functionality is built around them — trance slicer, the modulation, pad level, etc.Bring the functionality to AUv3 and track down your glitches, I’ll pop to 5 stars.

By far the best, 10 stars

I have igrand, really quite good; korg and ivory, both a bit electronic and a disappointment; Imperial grand, pretty nice; CMP, very good; and Ravenscroft which is very good. I have never played a Real Grand Piano, but the Colossus Dark Brown is, to my ears, almost perfect. I downloaded the Dark Brown, which took hours, but has been worth every minute! It is amazingly beautiful, so full and, well, GRAND! I can’t stop playing it. I also have bought the 3.4 gb upright and am equally impressed. BY FAR THE BEST.Only drawbacks are only reverb to adjust and crashes are common when changing the from one sound to another, but just re-open the app and all is well. I have been assured that the crashes will be fixed in next update.

High Quality piano sounds and great customer support

I’ve had the Upright Piano since shortly after they came out with this app. It’s a fantastic piano and a good all around sound. Works with rock based music, jazz, and sounds fine with classical as well. There was an issue with a sample on one of the layers of velocity on a single note. I emailed support and they quickly responded to say they will look into it. They emailed me 2 days later again to say that it was fixed and all I had to do was uninstall the piano and re-download it as they had the newly fixed version already uploaded. I wish I had emailed support earlier. I give them 5 stars as well as 5 for the sounds of the piano. I also have the less expensive Vintage Upright. It’s not as good as the Upright model, but they also charge you less and it’s a different sound for some extra variety. I’ll likely end up buying some other pianos at some point, but definitely don’t need them all.

Most Realistic Representation of Pianos

Colossus Piano is THE most realistic sounding piano (and EP) app currently available. If you want a piano that has been compressed and sits well in a mix right out-the-box, try Korg Module or Neo-Soul keys; I have those as well. However, for uncompressed ultra-realism, with a very wide dynamic range, the Colossus is best. The main piano is 14gb in size, a hint to how articulately sampled it is. This is especially great if you’re playing live jazz or classical gigs with no accompaniment.Again, this is probably overkill if you just need a pop piano that sits in a mix alongside vocals, guitars, drums, synths, bass, etc.

Nothing much to say... but best of the best

If you want a solid symphonic instrument catalog as a midi keyboard lover, look no further than Crudebyte Apps. Easiest midi connect ever. Very unsatisfied with other large name companies interfaces. This is WORTH EVERY PENNY in software and connection! No one will beat what Christian is doing. This is my first review ever on iTunes apps and really felt the need to say thank you and job well done! The idea of REAL super fidelity recorded instruments with velocity/instant use track sound is spot on. The high SSD storage space is also worth it no question once you hear. The HEAVY BRASS app is also a must have! SEVEN STARS *******

Important Message for The Developers (as well as the consumers)

Dear developers of Colossus PianoFirst of all, congratulations for making the most realistic piano sounds on IOS; they are simply the best I've heard (especially, Colossus Concert Grand, 14 GB). Having said that, please note that there is a Major Issue with the app interface; the app crashes whenever i swipe left and right to change piano models, especially, when i swipe between the Vintage Upright and the white upright "pianino" medels. The app keeps crashing unless i choose the first piano (Colossus Concert Grand). This is not an isolated issue as i found out there are other people complaining about it, and it is a deal breaker, especially, in a live situation. The device I am using is an Ipad Air 3rd generation (2019) model. Please fix the issue and i will be more than happy to give 5 stars Rating..Thank you in advance.

Incredible pianos especially for the money

I have pianos on my computer that cost a lot more and don’t sound any better and in often cases worse. The colossal piano is the “best”, but the white upright is just as inspiring in my opinion and much cheaper. In fact I’d say it’s the best deal bar none in Virtual Instruments. I’d give more stars if I could and I would definitely buy again w/o regrets. You do NEED an iPod/Pad/Phone with a headphone output. Bluetooth will have and unacceptable amount of latency as is the case on my computers as well. Maybe there are other Lightening adaptors that will work, but if all you have is the camera one, you need a headphone output in my opinion. Hopefully in the future they will add more incredible quality pianos! I like to try different sounds oftentimes and have a real affinity for vintage German uprights not to mention modern Seiler, Bechstein, Hoffman, Schimmel, Bösendorfer, etc... but some of those Grotrian, Steinway, Lipp, etc... blow my mind. Sorry for the little hint for the developers. I like collecting piano sounds like baseball cards.

Amazing sound, best piano app.

Don’t usually write reviews but here I go. I play piano and definitely prefer digital piano/keyboard or software with laptop when playing on stage. That said, a small setup is sometimes needed and definitely a go to piano which is why i wanted a piano app. I purchased the red Japanese Grand Piano and used it on stage. I was amazed by the sound, and quality; it delivered a rich and full quality sound of a grand piano. Comparing it with Korg module, ivory and other apps, this is hands down the best Piano app. Con: initial download is over an hourlong and other Colossus pianos cost more and take up a lot of GB space, but definitely worth it.

Yes, you have to buy something... but

This ain’t you mama’s piano. The pianos in here are for real world professional application, cutting through a mix, being sparkly and real. With proper care in amplification, you could have a scary piano live. In the studio, these pianos are my go to’s. They’re unique. They also play differently than any other sampled piano I’ve used. For lack of a better word, they play “real”. Sampled pianos of this pro quality on a computer are hundreds of dollars, up to a thousand. So, if you can’t part with 20 to 50 bucks. Then don’t. Go surf the net for free glitchy stuff. Its a bargain for you get. “Apps” are cute. This is not cute. It’s gorgeous.

Great Sounds. OK Interface. No Integration with GarageBand iOS

I really love the sounds - I’ve downloaded 2 pianos so far and I’m really enjoying the nuances in the samples. It’s a bit annoying that once I purchase a piano, there’s no way to find the name of that particular instrument (I have the black grand and the red grand, which I think are German/American and Japanese?).The layout of the app is... OK. They could use some UX designers to make the layout cleaner. The biggest disappointment is that it doesn’t show up as an option in iOS GarageBand to use as an external instrument. I’ve been looking for a great piano sound to bring into some of my iOS produced music, but I guess I’ll have to keep looking.
