Tutorial missing???

I saw some playing the game and was curious enough to find an app to see how the game is played. I love the simple problems to solve, and the daily updates, but still have no idea what the rules of the game are that govern the strategy and make one move wrong and another right. I kept thinking I would figure out by seeing what works, but I haven’t yet. I ordered a rule book, but it would be helpful to have explanations-for good moves and bad. It seems that if there a problems to solve, the problems have solutions based in rules and strategy and it would be a great learning tool to have bad moves explained. I’m just spitting in the wind right now, landing by chance on a good move after several wrong moves with no idea why. Every problem is hard without knowing the underlying rules and strategy, so advancing from one level to another is meaningless to me right now. This app is only for people who know the game, but not people trying to learn.

Overall great app, especially once you know some basic strategy

Overall, this is a great app. I was recently introduced to Go, and this is a great way to practice. I appreciate the app includes multiple ways that a player can approach the problem. The app would get five stars, if it included a little information about the principles of Go and why one solution is correct and the other solutions are not. Now that I have done some more research into basic Go principles, I am able to get a lot more out of the practice problems. Overall, great app! Thank you!

It works, but it’s not a good option for a beginner

First off: this app has not crashed on me or spammed me with excessive adds or notifications. That’s enough to get three stars from me. It also has daily updates for new problemsThe problems don’t seem to be organized in a way that’s meaningful in terms of difficulty. The easy problems don't seem any easier or harder than the basic problems or the intermediate ones. It does say when a move is “wrong” or “right” but there are no explanations why or anything like that.If you know what you're doing and just want a bunch of problems, maybe this is fun. If you're trying to learn, maybe try another option first.

Learning to Play Go

This app gives me a steady supply of Go “problems” to solve by playing out mini-games against the app. At each move, the app tells me when my move is “wrong” and allows me to see (if I wish to) what the app thinks would be “right.” When I have “solved” the problem, the app says so. If I want to, I can play the game out and prove to myself that the problem was indeed solved. The difficulty for me is that so far I am not gaining much in the way of general principles that I can apply to new problems. I am not even sure what “solved” means sometimes. Does it mean that my configuration “lives?” Does it mean that I can capture all my opponent’s tiles?I very much wish that there were some explanatory notes with this app. Judging from other comparable apps, there appear to be some conventions and configurations that are assumed to be in any user’s vocabulary. It would help me a lot if I knew what those were.

What it does and what it doesn’t...

Tsumego Pro is ill-equipped for novices to the heuristics of the game. What this is good at doing is providing exercises and telling you either “Solved” or “Wrong”. What this is REALLY bad at doing is telling you why you are wrong. An opponent can tell me that I won or lost a battle. A teacher helps me understand why I won or lost. This is not a tool to help you learn strategies or heuristics. It’s just a puzzle book. And by merely saying “Solved” or “Wrong”, without any explanation, all you have is Trial and Error, 99 ways not to win, and uselessly-memorized patterns without heuristics or learning that will be worthless against an actual player.

Decent practice, far from great

For a free app that provides daily baduk (go) puzzles, this isn’t bad. But a few things. If you’re not already familiar with the rules of baduk, then this won’t be for you as there’s no explanations on how to solve the puzzles or why you’re wrong. Second, all too often I’m given a puzzle that has more than one solution, but the app will only consider one correct. Third, often times the “correct” solution requires the opponent to make specific moves that don’t make much sense. And forth, sometimes the solution the game says is correct is not a solution at all. My stones are still unsettled and can become dead depending on the next move your opponent makes. This, this app assumes you’ll be playing morons. But, not all the practices are bad, I’d say only 1 out of 5 actually has the above issues. And did I mention its free with no ads? So, 3 stars for me.

Amazing

I’ve been watching this anime that inspired me to try go a little bit so I decided to download this app, Although I don’t really know much about go but this app made it very fun trying to solve the problems. When I open the app and try to solve a problems after a few minutes of trying I start to feel like I achieved something when I’m a to solve it even though it is my first time trying it and downloading a go app I highly recommended it.

Good practice but why?

I very much agree with goodtutor’s review. I like the daily problems and the right or wrong feedback. The app is very clean and an appealing space to solve problems. However, it would be so very nice if there was some sort of feedback on why a problem reaches the “solved” state.I do think the app is useful “as is” to learn patterns in the game. It does enable the user to learn to recognize given patterns and associated responses.I also like that additional possible actions are considered. Each problem is designed to lead you down the best path, but you can take alternative actions that help the user understand possible outcomes.

Very nice Go problem app

I’ve had this for a year or so now and am quite a big fan of it. It has a good amount of practice problems and the best part is the daily problems that are sent to you!My only complaints are three:1) The harder problems are not explained in detail. This can present a problem if you are just starting off on more difficult problems and are not sure why a certain move is incorrect.2) Problems are not always graded well. I’ve seen some pretty easy hard problems that are solved almost instantly and yet some medium, or even easy, problems that are quite difficult!3) Fortunately, this is only a rare problem but, sometimes, there can be more than one solution yet the app only accepts one way of solving it. This is quite rare though, so it’s not a huge issue.Other than these issues, it is an excellent app!

Enjoy at your level. Great app. Great developer

I am just learning Go. After about 4 months, I felt I had a better solution on one problem than the developer. So I Googled a complaint and found a forum with a dozen or so people who agreed with me. What a great discussion. Nobody said anything nasty just normal comments between friends that did not know each other. You could tell they all loved the app because no one said a bad word about the developer they disagreed with.
