Easy and convenient

I don’t understand all the complaints (perhaps they’ve fixed the issues by now) because everything was extremely smooth. Downloaded the app, bought a card, added funds in app, added the card to my Apple wallet, used it, and everything went perfectly. I’m new to DC transit, and this couldn’t have been easier. Good work

Terrible terrible app

I’ve never been this annoyed with an app before. I use the Apple wallet regularly but this is the only instance where it did not function correctly. My husband and I purchased cards on our respective phones and none of them scanned properly via Apple wallet. We ended up buying the physical metro cards at the station. I called customer service to ask for a refund on our unused credits on our virtual cards, but their only way of refunding us was by sending us physical cards with our balances. Don’t waste your time with this, just stick to physical cards.

Be Careful, WMATA Steals

There are lots of rules about how the metro card can be used that seem to only be apparent as you use the app. I loaded a card and used it on my phone. I got a new phone and when I tried to use the card, I was informed I could not use the card I was using because it was associated with my old phone. I was instructed to disassociate the old card from the old phone before putting the card on my new phone. Of course, since the old phone was no longer in my possession, I could not disassociate it, so I had to remove the card from my account altogether. There was $16 loaded on the card I had to remove, that was gone too. There was no warning about not receiving a refund for the money loaded on the card before being forced to remove it from my account. I hope you enjoy the extra cash WMATA people, a very clever way of stealing, thanks a lot!

Deactivates your physical card

I downloaded this app thinking it would be a good backup for if I ever lost my SmarTrip card, and I appreciate the ease of adding money and managing my trips, but I didn’t know adding the SmarTrip card to my phone would deactivate my plastic card. Now if my phone dies while I’m out, I guess I have to buy a new card?? Also, I had issues at several stations where I had to scan my phone several times before it took, so I’m not thrilled that’s the only place I can keep my card now. Every other card I have in Apple Wallet uses multiple access points (physical card, iPhone, Apple Watch, etc.) to the same account, so I don’t understand why SmarTrip didn’t do that too.

Payment doesn’t work and rude metro staff

Had a bad experience first time using this app a month ago, but since I am visiting DC again today, decided to give the app a second try. Terrible idea, the phone payment didn't work on the way out. Had to ask a metro staff for help and I scanned the phone no least than 15 times in front of her and still didn't go through. The whole time she is questioning how I get into the metro (sorry lady, this is Washington metro, I don't want/need to sneak in here). I have an iPhone 13 and have never had any problem with other apple wallet apps.

Not for infrequent riders

When you load funds on your account, you have to wait 24 hours for the money to appear in your account. Then you have to “pick up” your funds by visiting a station, tapping at the fare kiosk, and waiting 4 more hours. I’m not sure why this app exists if it would be faster to use the kiosk. I had an extra problem where my loaded funds would not transfer to my card even after the tapping and waiting, so I called customer service. Long story short it was a problem caused by my card having a zero balance. So if you don’t ride enough to use auto reload, this app is not for you.

Solid, but a few fixes needed

I’ve largely enjoyed my experience with the app. I have a few small suggestions that would improve my experience. First, under Account Settings, update the Suffix field to include “III”. I’m the third, but the suffix options are currently limited to “Jr.” and “Sr.”Second, the app needs some layout adjustments. On newer iPhone models, the app layout runs too close to the top and bottom of the screen. For example, after clicking on the Trip Tools tab, the search bar at the top collides with the iPhone notch and iOS elements (time, battery and wifi icons). Similarly at the bottom of the screen, the iPhone home bar cuts right across the four tabs at the bottom. This makes the tabs nearly illegible and hard to click on. Please consider these UI improvements! Thank you.

May as well stick to the station kiosks

Value that is added to your card via the mobile app takes foreeeeever to kick in. I often end up having to buy additional value through the station kiosk because I am still waiting for the value added through the app. To make matters worse, auto-reload does not allow me to set it up when I tap it, so that fails as a workaround too. The only way I could make it work was when manually purchasing more stored value — and even then, this option only appeared if I was adding value $20 or greater. Lastly, the app let me add an expired card to my account, and then let me add $10 to that card, which is still stuck pending. I’m going to have to call to get this money back, but it could have been easily avoided by blocking the addition of expired cards.

No flexibility

I can understand and even get behind using my phone to process all metro needs but there was no warning that I wouldn’t be able to use my metro card once I registered it with the smart trip app. I would still like to be able to use my card in the event my phone died or was lost and all I had was the card. This app/system doesn’t seem flexible enough for day to day use. It’s not user friendly in my opinion as I couldn’t quickly locate the add value option or easily pull up the card scanner on my phone. We’re I able to have the option to use my physical card or the app when using metro I think the experience would be better and quick options from the screen to add value or pull the card scanner to my phone would also improve user experience.

Use a physical SmarTrip card

Downloaded the app and went through all of the effort to do so. There was no instruction regarding use of only one card per phone or device so I bought two and it didn’t work. Even the drivers said that each person having a card would be best for groups. I now have a wasted purchase on my phone app. We gave up and bought cards. It was so much easier.
