User Reviews for Canary Mail

What new features??

I’ve been requesting basic features from canary for months that are found in other email apps, and this “new” version includes none of them. In fact, I can see nothing new in the design, settings, or appearance of the app. Looks like a ridiculous excuse to charge loyal users again. What a crock of **it.In response to the developer's boilerplate answer to my review, the app has basically the same exact features as before with some minor vague "redesign", but basic features such as an instant undelete feature and the ability to see more than first names in the headers of email threads are still missing despite being requested repeatedly by users and being found on almost all other email apps. So to the developer, stop posting BS boilerplate excuses and start delivering done actual new useful features. To the developer: you completely miss the point. Yes, you have gussied up the interface a little and put a few new features in place that nobody needs, but your app is woefully behind other email apps in basic features that you continue to ignore. People keep requesting these basic features, and you ignore them. So yes, there are some new features and yes each screen looks a little different, but basically you have added nothing of any practical value. Try adding a few features that people actually need and request and maybe people will be willing to pay for them.

Best for encrypted email ...

I have evaluated many different email apps over the years that claim to support GPG encryption, and Canary has always been by far the best and most seamless at that. Now, is it the best MAIL client in general? I couldn't say. However, I have had as good an experience with Canary as I've had with the built-in iOS Mail app, except the latter does not support GPG encryption. So, if your primary need is the ability to support GPG encryption , look no further. You can use your existing keys or work with new ones. Canary offers multiple ways of importing your existing keychains if that's what you want to do. They support many different email account types. I've personally only worked with exchange and gmail but both worked seamlessly. Now, I cannot speak to the quality of their technical support because I haven't had a need to reach out. It's always worked just fine for me.

Hard pass

Email apps have different features but they all should at least give the user access to their emails. Canary does not do this. I trusted canary and assumed all was fine but eventually I realized that I was missing emails and checked and it turns out canary was not showing me all my emails. Interestingly canary on one device will show emails not shown in canary on another device. While the Apple mail app is merely adequate it is now what I am using as support has stopped responding to me (ironically thanks to canary having a read notification feature I can see that they opened my last email days ago). Or maybe they did respond and I just can’t see it. Either way this app is not worth the money, look elsewhere. Another flaw that is extra glaring considering the company emphasizes privacy in canary a lot:Canary doesn’t allow for the downloading of remote images per email. Every email app I have ever tried has allowed you to turn off loading remote images for privacy/security and then in each email you can hit a button to download them. This is a great solution as some emails you need the pictures but want it off by default. Canary makes it an all or nothing thing. Never seen it done this way and there’s a reason for that.

Too many bugs

The good thing: the PGP encryption and decryption works indeed like a charm! The bad thing: the app is too buggy for everyday use. The starred messages do not correspond to the starred messages in the email account (unstarred messages appear, even after refresh). The email address is not always shown when you write to someone. You cannot edit text between the incoming text lines when replying. Search only searches locally on the device (and hangs beyond that). Choosing an addressee is painfully slow. When you get a notification for a new email, that email has most likely not yet downloaded. It usually takes several refreshes to get it on the phone, and often some more refreshes to also get the *content* of the email on the phone (even with good internet connection). Sometimes the app just crashes. Writing a draft on the phone, and then opening it on the email provider Web page fortunately no longer erases the email (as it was before), but the email is not in draft mode (need to copy paste it out into a new draft). In short, too much pain... That is unfortunate, because the idea is great!

My kind of Mail App

The app isn’t perfect. It seems as though there are still lots of features they plan to implement, but depending on your priorities, this could be a great choice. What I live about the app:1. Read Receipts - this keeps me in the know and helps with anxiety2. Email Encryption - this wasn’t the easiest to set up and I hope it will become more user-friendly, but with all the cyber attacks and hackers out there, I get peace of mind being able to send sensitive information to my wife knowing my mail is secure3. I like that I can easily pin my mail and it shows up at the top along with a bunch of other swipe options4. My favorite part is that it is a one time payment!!! Read receipt features are usually a monthly charge and this works just as well for me. I would never go for a monthly charge again.Things I think could be better:1. The design could be a bit more modernized. As I said, it looks like they have plans in the work.2. Add folder rules so that mail can automatically be moved out of the inbox and stored in a folder based on rules3. An additional type of encryption where both parties don’t need a key, rather just a password when sending one way.4. Swipe left in the mail message to go to the next mail message in the inbox.I don’t usually review apps, but I want this to succeed. There’s a lot of potential here. It’s already an awesome app.

Was great, but then became unreliable

I’ve been using Canary on all my devices -iPad, iPhone, MBP- and it was pretty great for a while, and while it’s had some quirks -for example, auto-select behavior is different between all the devices (and I prefer the iPad’s behavior where it’ll only add items as I scroll down, and will not re-select items I de-selected), and magic keyboard support on iPad disappears if you visit a link (and have to close and reopen the app to get it back)- it was still a decent e-mail client. However at some point in the last few weeks, it’s become unreliable. It takes too long to load emails (especially on my iPhone 12 Pro) to where I’ll wait almost a whole minute between clicking on a notification and the email finally loading. On top of that, I’ve noticed that it doesn’t always archive or delete emails: they’ll disappear from my email list on Canary, but upon closing/reopening the app (something I have to do to get keyboard support back on the iPad) a lot of the emails are back, and there doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason.I hope these issues get fixed, because mass-deletion of e-mails is what truly sets this app apart.

Could be a lot better...

I am an email power user with multiple email accounts and have tried many paid and free email apps. Web based clients do not provide the functionality I require, namely that I need access to email when NOT ONLINE. This is also where Canary has a serious shortfall as it only “syncs a limited number of emails in order to conserve bandwidth and space”. I have plenty of space available and bandwidth is not an issue when I am able to connect. But location and site security restrictions impede access at times. Tech support cannot answer how I can force a download of my mail. A mail client should be able to access all the mail associated to an account. Another major annoyance is that there is no visual indication that you have replied to a particular email. A lot of clients will show a reply or forwarding arrow to indicate it has been acted on previously. This is not the case with Canary, you need to check your sent mail to confirm and that can be tedious to search through. It is a time consuming annoyance. If you leave the threading of messages on then this is not an issue... but there is a problem with that as well as leaving that on is an issue because Canary cannot seem to keep the local database free of errors and it mixes multiple unrelated threads. You are forced to constantly re-index. There is plenty of room for improvement here.

Decent, but for the price missing basic customization options

Been trying Canary out to move away from basic iOS mail app and to be able to use gpg keys to sign and encrypt. Overall not bad but for the price I’m kind of shocked it doesn’t do basic things like pull photos for people from your contacts or allow you to remove that terrible “category” section from the menu. Maybe I need to catch up with the times or something but I don’t need my email to categorize things for me and I’d rather have faster access to the individual mailboxes. I’m also confused about why the signature box feels so much bigger than the text box of the email. I don’t use signatures and you should be able to turn that off and it not even be a text box in the compose section any more. Security or convenience I guess. But I’m just kind of shocked that for the price some of the basic little things that pretty much every other mail app does is missing here. Am I going to pay? No. Why pay for an app that doesn’t do any of the things free app do just for pgp / gpg use on my phone? Canary doesn’t support my old version of OS X and so just to be able to use gpg on my phone doesn’t seem worth the price. Add the features that every other app has and I’m willing to pay.

It has gotten better, but the watch app needs more help

I purchased this app a few years ago for all of my devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac & Watch) to the tune of $60. I was very angry with myself for having done it, especially once I started using it. It was suer-buggy and the sync took forever and worked intermittently, so I uninstalled it and went to something else.I recently revisited the app, and I will give credit where it is due, the app works a lot better now and is actually usable for daily use. One thing remains bad (IMHO): the watch app! Who designs a watch app that has no unified inbox??? I have give accounts, and I have to go to each account on the watch to read new messages?!?!?!?I’m hoping they will add this simple thing, as they’re the ONLY mail app that doesn’t have a unified inbox, and no excuses they provide can make up for such a glaring omission. Until they do this, I’ll stay away, but keep checking in to see if they fix it. Until then, I can’t recommend it; too much competition in this space.

All-in-one email client masterpiece

This app has made working from home a whole new game changer. I have always found it absurd how convenient it is to have an email app on mobile yet when it comes to replying and composing emails through them, it just takes away the whole emailing experience. Canary Mail has officially revolutionized the world of mobile emailing. When I use this app, I feel that I am still using a computer to professionally reply and compose emails. What I love best about this app is that it has a read receipt feature to let me know when the recipient(s) have opened my email, cross-device syncing for when I am alternating between devices, and the auto-filter feature that selects unimportant emails for me to delete without having to go through the trouble of picking them off one by one manually. Overall, this app replaces all mobile email clients and I paid for the pro version with no hesitation. :) this app really stands out and I don’t think any other app can ever compare.
