Challenging? Above Average

Like all crosswords puzzles, how difficult or easy they are depends on how literate or well read you are (and what type of upbringing you had in school regarding grammar and English, LOL). In about two hours, I knocked off three crossword puzzles, the first easy one, the large easy one, and the first New York Times crossword (I don't remember the newspaper date :-). I heard that the New York Times crossword puzzles are the most difficult so I thought I'd try one. Like many fairly good crossword puzzles, which this is, it stimulates the mind and makes you think really hard, digging really deep to find some of those words (i'm embarrassed to say that some words were quite easy but ones that took awhile to get.)

Best crossword app I have found

I have been looking for a good crossword app since ages. I have tried many, including the much trumpeted NYTimes one. This is simply the best crossword app I have used. The layouts are great, especially the 'page' layout. On an iPad there is sufficient space to display the entire grid, the clues, toggle keys and the letter keys. You don't have to move around the grid or the clues if you don't want to! This is such a simple concept but I have never seen this anywhere yet. It is very easy to move around the clues. The automatic clue/grid traverse option is also superb. I don't see how you can better this app!

EDIT Upgrade looks good, doesn't fix anything

EDIT I have upped this to four stars as some bugs and misfeatures have been ironed out. This is really a very very good app. Internal browser doesn’t work, really, but that’s minor. The 4.x upgrade is very pretty. Unfortunately, it adds new annoyances and fails to fix old ones. The biggest problem with this app, since the last upgrade (years ago) is the sensitivity of the letters up and down the sides of the screen. It's practically impossible to select letters reliably without hitting clue text so the cursor jump. This is NOT fixed, though I had hoped it would be.The cursor behavior has changed radically in 4.x, and not for the better. I can't overwrite letters anymore -- the cursor just sticks on an existing letter. I cannot imagine why anyone would desire this behavior. Hitting the advance button used to take you to the next BLANK space (which is useful if you want to solve the puzzle), but now just jumps to the next word, even if it's already filled in.Overall, a good app. But like too many apps nowadays, the "upgrades" tend to move backwards in usability.

glad this app is here, but needs a tweak

I am really happy to finally see the Across Lite app. I have been using another app to access the NY Times puzzle and am happy to switch over. Each app has its advantages and disadvantages, but I will only speak to Across Lite.Advantage: you can access the NYTimes puzzle and pay a lot less for the privilege especially if you are a NY Times subscriber (I get the Sunday paper, and this provides the crosswords on line at a cheap price). Advantage: the user can use a blue tooth keyboard instead of a screen keyboard.Disadvantage: does not automatically load the puzzle. You need to go to the site, download the puzzle and then select to play with Across Lite--this isn't harsh, just a lot of steps that other apps don't require.Disadvantage: It does not allow tabbing to the next open/unfinished word in the order that you want (across, down, or nearest), it forces nearest which can make it a bit annoying.Need to check: I am guessing that since the app downloads the puzzle from the NYTimes, that the user can access the puzzle on multiple platforms (computer, phone, tablet). The other programs require separate subscriptions.

Very good!

I like this, and I've done a number of puzzles since downloading the app.It took me a while to find the keyboard option because I was looking at my iPad in landscape and the keyboard is only available in portrait. If you're in landscape, it appears that you have to enter letters by tapping the letters arranged on the two sides of the screen, which is awkward.I like the convenience of online links to many puzzle sources. (I've been doing ones from the Chronicle of High Ed.)I did a crossword that included several special clues. One square would represent an element, with the abbreviation one way and the name the other. E.g.,Na down clue was ESAU, with "Au" in one square. Across was The Mongol dynasty! With GOLD in that same square. There's no way to type that sort of thing. Maybe the app could give you a special way to mark a square that you know is not a regular letter and you could just remember that it's special. (I've seen other puzzles whe a square is supposed to essential something else -- a shape, a color, or whatever.)

Puzzles are even more fun with Across Lite!

I always look forward to the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. A good puzzle and a cup of coffee are a great way to start the day. Since I started using Across Lite, I seem to finish puzzles even faster than before. I like that I can fill in the few letters of a word that I may know, just like I used to in the Times Magazine. I like that the app has different levels of difficulty where you can choose to see your correct letters as you go or not. The app could use some help with rebus puzzles, which are my favorite (besides the cryptic crosswords). Right now, each cell only accepts one letter per square which makes solving a rebus a bit harder since you need to remember what's really in those rebus squares. But even with that, I'd recommend the app. It also makes finding puzzles online easy as pie!Just installed the update, and haven't seen a rebus to solve yet, so I'm not sure if the programmers have found a way to make rebus puzzles easier to read/solve yet. Still loving the app,

Best of the Crossword Apps, but needs an upgrade for iOS 10

As somebody who does the NY Times puzzle religiously every day I have found that this is by far the best app in terms of ease of input and use. Unfortunately there are some bugs under iOS 10. Trying to enter any rebus characters makes the program crash and wipes out any progress you've made on the puzzle up to that point (incredibly frustrating), so forget doing ANY Thursday NY Times puzzle with this current version. Also, the icon and graphics are incredibly dated and amateurish making the app ugly to look at. If they can fix these problems it's a five star app all the way.

pretty good crossword app

There are options in the settings that allow you to tailor the mechanics to suit your preference. Layout is fairly easy on the eyes. If I were going to change something… I believe that in previous versions on devices other than my iPad I was able to switch between horizontal and vertical word focus by double tapping the pivotal square; in this version there’s a button at the bottom forcing you to shift your focus just as you were about to type in a word. Also, I find it unwieldy to have to leave the app, go into downloads and share a downloaded puzzle with the app to get it to open. I’m predominantly an android/pc user so I find the iPad versions of most apps quirky; users that go steady with Apple devices won’t know the difference. Overall, it’s a solid app with a good layout that allows me to enjoy my Brendan Emmett Quigley crosswords on my iPad.

Outstanding!

A well thought out design in an app that does exactly what it was designed to do, entertain you. It uses a unique way of character entry as opposed to a common keyboard, this threw me off at first but it only took a few minutes to get use to and I find it easier to use now then a common keyboard. No keyboard to get in the way of a beautifully designed smart layout that gives the impression of doing the crosswords on paper. I highly recommend this app, if you intend to learn to do crosswords they also have "Across Trainer." It's a beautiful app to look at. It also has so many settings options for customizations. Enjoy!

Crosswords done simply

I am enjoying this app to solve NY Times Puzzles (for now). Great feature is that you can choose among free downloads by degree of difficulty. I too enjoy the Bluetooth Keyboard feature....much faster and do wish there was a tab function. Often I'm not ready to work on the word that is selected, but this is a minor down side.I also wish it kept track of which puzzles you download by the reference number in the list of puzzles. I find I have to keep a manual list to avoid repeating a puzzle.Looking forward to getting into the other free puzzles available when I exhaust the NYT Tuesday puzzles.
